Ian Wright thinks Liverpool defence a ‘worry’ and highlights how to exploit space behind Alexander-Arnold and Robertson

IAN WRIGHT thinks Liverpool’s Premier League rivals will have taken notice of their defensive troubles in their season opener against Leeds.

The Reds needed an 88th-minute penalty from Mo Salah to edge the newly-promoted Whites 4-3 in an entertaining encounter at Anfield.

Ian Wright believes Leeds may have exposed Liverpool’s weaknesses

And Arsenal legend Wright expects other opponents to follow Leeds’ blueprint and attempt to take advantage of Liverpool’s high defensive line.

Wright told Match of the Day: “They did similar to this at Norwich at the start of last season, obviously Norwich didn’t punish them like Leeds did.

“But if you look at them, they’re totally out of whack.

“They’ve got Robertson too far up [the left-hand] side and Trent Alexander-Arnold wide out there.

“They could have been punished so much more.

“It’s something you have to worry for Liverpool because once [Leeds] win the ball, they’re right in them.

“It’s something you have to say, people will be watching seeing if they can cause them problems.

“Look at that Kalvin Phillips is given so much time [on Leeds’ first goal], magnificent pass, but look how high they are, Alexander-Arnold gets dragged in by Harrison, but his two touches.

“You have to have pressure on the ball [when playing a high line].”

The usually unflappable Virgil van Dijk was also guilty of an error which led to Leeds’ second goal as Liverpool were pegged back on three occasions before Salah scored the winner from the spot to complete his hat-trick.

Jurgen Klopp says there is ‘space for improvement’ after Liverpool conceded three goals vs Leeds opening day, but insists everything is ‘all good’
