Fears for Premier League and Liverpool that season will be scrapped after Holland and Belgium axe campaigns

THERE are fears the Premier League will be scrapped and Liverpool denied the title after Holland and Belgium’s top flights were both cancelled because of coronavirus.

Dutch football chiefs pulled the plug on the 2019/20 Eredivisie yesterday after Netherlands prime minster Mark Rutte banned football until September and some famous football face think the Prem could go the same way.

Ajax were top of the table – only clear of rivals AZ Alkmaar on goal difference – but they will not be declared champions.

And Alan Pardew’s ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk remain in the Eredivisie, despite the latter team being 11 points from safety – as the Dutch FA (KNVB) also announced there will be no promotions or relegations.

Earlier this month Belgian football chiefs cancelled their season but crowned Club Brugge champions as they were 15 points clear at the top with just one game remaining.

And many famous faces – including Gary Lineker and Piers Morgan – think the Premier League may soon follow suit.

Replying to a tweet announcing the Dutch FA’s decision, Morgan wrote: “This has always been the only fair way to resolve the season.”

And Lineker was quick to respond and wrote: “May well prove to be the only way. Hardly fair though.”

There are hopes the season can be resumed next month if health and safety targets can be met.

Just like in Germany where provisional plans are in place for Bundesliga action to return on May 9.

But Morgan in particular does not think the Premier League should follow that path.

He responded to Lineker and said: “I honestly think it is. Every other solution I have seen is less fair than simply accepting the season cannot be finished and voiding it.

“Holland has realised that, but we’re still desperately trying to save a season that can’t be saved.”

Liverpool are 15 points clear of second place Manchester City though the Reds have played 29 games versus City’s 28.

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher also gave his views urging the league to finish which would likely allow his old side to claim their first title in 30 years.

After his followers rebuffed his call for a points-per-game system to decide the league winners, the Sky Sports pundit tweeted again.

He wrote: “Seems no one on here wants this outcome or my suggestion of PPG (points per game) on the back of Uefa using it for European places.

“So the message is get the season done whenever the virus allows.”
