Ex-Man City star Micah Richards ‘didn’t think Sergio Aguero was that good’ when he first arrived at the club

MICAH RICHARDS has conceded he didn’t think that Sergio Aguero was so amazing when he first joined Manchester City.

Aguero was in blistering form on Sunday as he hit a hat-trick in the 6-1 thrashing of Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The Argentine hitman, 31, became the highest ever overseas Premier League goalscorer, as he surpassed Thierry Henry to take his tally to 177.

Aguero managed the feat in three fewer games than the Arsenal icon as he needed 255 games to reach the target.

He is now the joint-fourth in the all-time list, with Frank Lampard, and he has managed more hat-tricks than the legendary Alan Shearer.

Richards showered Aguero in praise after his exploits, but he admitted he didn’t think the forward would become the phenomenon he is today, at least judging by first impressions.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Richards said: “When I first trained with Aguero I didn’t think he was that good.

“He didn’t train that well, he didn’t work that hard and then when he played he scored.

“He was one of those players that didn’t need to turn up in training because he was just so naturally gifted and come game time he was ready.

“To see him do so well has been an incredible achievement for him obviously but great for me to play with calibre of player.

“When I first started at Man City I didn’t think I would be playing with the special sort of players.

“He deserves everything he gets not just because what he does on the pitch but off the pitch the most humble person you’ll ever meet.

“For me he’s one of the best ever players to grace the Premier League.”

Aguero’s goals have helped City lift four Premier League titles.
