Edinson Cavani breaks silence on his future and confirms Benfica transfer talks.. but leaves door open to Leeds move

EDINSON CAVANI has broken his silence over his future, confirming he is is in talks with Benfica but leaving the door open to a Leeds switch.

The Uruguayan star, 33, is heading back to Paris from a break back home in Montevideo and confirmed he was in talks with multiple clubs.

Edinson Cavani has confirmed talks with Benfica, but admitted ‘nothing is defined’

Benfica looked to have secured Cavani’s signature earlier this month in a deal worth £8.1million per year.

But Cavani himself claims “nothing is defined” yet following his release from Paris Saint-Germain – in a huge boost to Leeds.

On his links to Benfica – who have signed Jan Vertonghen from Tottenham – Cavani revealed: “We spoke.

“There were meetings, as there were also with other clubs.

“Nothing is defined, so I cannot say anything.

“When there is an agreement, when it is real, they will know.”

Cavani has been working hard since being released by PSG – and shared a video of himself working out as he attempts to find a new club.

Cavani had looked set to join Atletico Madrid after a deal was rumoured to have been agreed in January.

But after the move fell apart, he became the latest in a growing line of unattached stars – including Joe Hart – hitting the gym to attract a new team.

Cavani was then believed to have penned a two-year deal at Benfica with an official announcement “imminent.”

The deal appeared to have completely collapsed after the Portuguese club released an official statement on their website calling their interest in Cavani “completely false”.

It read: “Benfica deny various false reports from various press organisations about the club’s interest in players without foundation.

“One story that stands out is the club’s president, Luis Felipe Vieria, supposedly being involved in negotiations with Edison Cavani.

“This story is completely false.”

Edinson Cavani has been hitting the gym in Uruguay to stay in shape as he hunts for a new club – with Leeds interested

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani has publicly spoken about the possibility of signing Cavani to lead the line next season, with his side now back in the Premier League.

He said: “In addition to his quality, Cavani could contribute with his physicality and adapt here, but I’ve never talked about him with the coach.

“Having said that, we’ve certainly thought about him and we’ll see, given he’s still available on a free transfer.”

Cavani shouldn’t be short of suitors this month, either after consistently boasting one of the best scoring records across Europe throughout his career.

That includes 353 goals in 586 club appearances – while scoring 50 times in 116 matches for Uruguay.

On top of that, Cavani is a serial winner departing PSG with 16 major trophies under his belt.
