Speaking to NOS Sport he said: “If I’m honest, I don’t know what he told me, but we were both smiling, so everything must be fine, right?

Despite the language barrier he said that he was an admirer of Messi and meeting him was a “special” moment.

The American added: “The Argentine doesn’t speak English, but it was very special to meet him.”

In addition to the language issue, Dest made the headlines when he made a sham of kick-ups at his Barca unveiling.

He managed to save face by finishing off the debacle with a sublime skill.

Barca reportedly had him come back and film the kick-ups again after the blooper video went viral.

Dest joined Barca from Ajax this summer for £23.5million and signed a five-year deal.

A number of clubs were also chasing his signature, including European champions Bayern Munich.

But in the end he decided to go to Spain because he had always wanted to play for the same club as his childhood hero Ronaldinho.

He said: “My favourite player, my idol growing up was Ronaldinho and he made his own history in Barcelona. When I found out about the interest from Barca it was an easy decision to make.”

Dest also expressed that had always been a dream of his to play for the Catalan giants.

He continued: “I also chose Barcelona over any other team because it has always been a dream of mine to play here.”
