Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany blasted by fans despite Man City hero taking 50 per cent pay cut after hanging up boots

ANDERLECHT boss Vincent Kompany has come under fire from the Belgium club’s fanbase despite accepting a 50 per cent pay cut.

The Manchester City legend became the full-time manager last month when he announced his retirement from playing at the age of 34.

Having come through the academy at Anderlecht, the four-time Premier League champion returned to his boyhood club last summer where he joined as a player-manager.

And Brussels media reported on Thursday that the 89-cap international has agreed to have his salary cut by half in recognition of his reduced role.

Sources claimed Kompany will now earn £2.7million a year in place of his former annual pay packet, believed to be £5.4m.

However Anderlecht supporters were quick to criticise Kompany, with some claiming he is still being overpaid.

Fans even took aim at Anderlecht’s dreadful form last season where they finished in eighth spot – their second consecutive finish outside of the top four.

One fan raged: “He ought to have divided his salary by four or five. He was a great player, but he’s a minor coach.”

Another commented: “It’s normal for him to cut his salary in two, given the fact he doesn’t even win half the points available.”

A third added “The other half of his salary will go to his usual hospital. He’s at risk of injury even sat on the bench!”

Meanwhile one asked: “How can you think these payments are normal or justified?”

One then stated: “Taking a 50 per cent pay cut is the least he should do. £2.7m is still pretty good, and he’s now only doing half as much work.”

Things haven’t gone much better this season for Kompany and Anderlecht, despite the club being unbeaten in their first four league games.

They sit eighth in the table having won once and drawing three times.
