Lewis Hamilton takes pole at Silverstone with Bottas second as Mercedes dominate again

LEWIS HAMILTON will head into tomorrow’s race in pole position after pipping team-mate Valtteri Bottas with a new lap record.

Hamilton, who spun during Q2, responded by posted an unstoppable time of 1:24.303 to earn his 91st career pole position.

The Brit was three tenths quicker than his fellow Mercedes driver with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to line up at Silverstone in third.

But once again it was Mercedes who showed their utter dominance with Verstappen an incredible 1.147 second slower.

Lando Norris brilliantly delivered by posting the fifth quickest time just behind Charles LeClerc.

Lance Stroll took sixth ahead of Carlos Sainz, Daniel Ricciardo, Esteban Ocon and Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton said after breaking yet another record: “Ultimately, there’s a real big gap between us and third place and Valtteri is pushing me right to the limit.

“I made some changes going into qualifying – which was worse.

“There are gusts of wind in different parts of the circuit so it’s like juggling balls on a plate.

“I already had the spin but we managed to compose ourselves. It still isn’t perfect but it never gets old.

“You normally have sirens and flags and smoke and the atmosphere is buzzing.

“We definitely miss the fans Thanks to the team and the guys at the factory who are constantly working tirelessly and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
