Canelo vs Chris Eubank Jr tale of the tape: How fighters compare as Brit talks up super-fight

CHRIS EUBANK JR is seeking a mega boxing match-up with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez… but how do the two compare?

As one of the world’s best-paid sportsman, Mexican fighter Canelo has conquered four weight divisions and would undoubtedly be the favourite in any contest.

Last in action in November, talk of a fight with either Callum Smith or Billy Joe Saunders has calmed recently, leaving room for Eubank Jr to stake his claim.

A switch to the United States has helped the Brit regather momentum in his career that looked to have stalled before last year’s victory over James DeGale.

He told Sky Sports: “Canelo Alvarez, that’s the No1 fight that I want right now.

“I don’t think anyone on the planet would make a better opponent for him.

“Most guys are going in there to run and survive, I’m going in there to destroy. “I know I can beat him, so that’s the fight I want.”

Eubank Jr, who has held WBA interim middleweight title since 2019, continued: “I definitely have got a strategy.

“I see the weaknesses. I see where he can be exposed.

“I’m not looking to survive, I’m taking the fight to him and I don’t think he’s ready for somebody like that.”

Canelo, 29, has only lost once in his entire career, at the hands of Floyd Mayweather over seven years ago.

A rematch victory over Gennady Golovkin after a controversial draw chalked up win number 50 of his time in the ring and 36 of his triumphs have come via knockout.

By comparison, 30-year-old Eubank Jr has claimed 22 of his 29 victories via KO, with two defeats.

The son of British boxing icon Chris Sr would have a height and reach advantage in such a contest, which he is determined to face if he is to fulfill his potential.

Eubank Jr added: “Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez, two of the biggest names in boxing and they both have middleweight titles.

“Those are the guys I want. Those are the fights that I need at this stage of my career. I don’t want to take backward steps. It’s full steam ahead.”
