Solskjaer delighted to see Lingard ‘back to his old self’ after helping Man Utd star through slump

JESSE LINGARD had to be helped through a tough time off the pitch by his boss — to get him back to his best on it.

Manchester United star Lingard, 26, is now flying again after a big slump.

It is understood the player has been affected by abuse on social media, injury problems and the loss of his England place.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “What he has had to deal with, that will be between us.

“You can criticise anyone about anything but as a manager, I have to look after these boys in the good and the bad times.

“It’s good to see him back to his old self. He’s got a great attitude.”

Lingard and team-mate Fred received racist abuse from a fan in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Manchester City.

He tweeted: “Shameful behaviour. It may be the derby but there is never a reason to be racist.”

Police are now investigating the incident and have made an arrest.

Man City said they were working to identify offenders, with a statement saying: “The club are also working with GMP regarding an instance of objects being thrown on to the field of play.

“The club operates a zero-tolerance policy regarding discrimination of any kind, and anyone found guilty of racial abuse will be banned from the club for life.”
