Edoardo Mortara starts fourth in the Mercedes’ powered Venturi ahead of Brit Sam Bird who is fifth after a messy first sector in super pole.

Sims’ is the early championship leader ahead of the race after securing three points for taking pole position.

He said: Everything has started nicely here in qualifying, I couldn’t have asked for much more.

“The car was really nice and a clean lap in super pole – a nice way to start the season.”

He joked: “That makes championship leader at this stage, which is the first time I’ve done that in FE.

“If anything else I can look back at my career as having led the formula E championship.”

Defending champion Jean-Eric Vergne starts 11th on the grid after being out in group 1, suffering a lack of grip due to the track being dirty.

New-boy Brendon Hartley starts back in 18th after a lack of track time in testing, as fellow ex-F1 star Felipe Massa is ahead in 17th after a frustrating session.
