Ruiz blames ‘weight gain’ for losing to Joshua – and promises to be in ‘best shape of my life’ if there’s a trilogy

ANDY RUIZ has blamed gaining ‘too much weight’ as the reason for losing his world heavyweight titles to British superstar Anthony Joshua.

The Mexican-American had tipped the scales at more than 20st on Friday, shocking pundits and fans.

That was more than 3st heavier than challenger AJ – and more than a stone heavier than he had been in his shock win last June.

As he walked to the ring, shocked fans mockingly compared Ruiz to KO king Butterbean – real name Eric Esch.

And after Joshua boxed around Ruiz to regain his world titles, the losing fighter rued his weight gain.

He said: “It was his night. I didn’t prepare how I should have.

“I gained too much weight. I don’t want to give excuses, he won. He boxed me around. If we do a third fight you best believe I’m going to get in shape. I’ll be in the best shape of my life.

“I thought I was going to feel stronger. Next fight I’m going to get more prepared. I tried to train myself for this.

“I was chasing him too much. I was hesitating too much.”

On his win, Joshua said: “It’s all about preparation.

“One day when I release a book I will talk about my career.

“It’s all about experience – life is a rollercoaster, what do you want me to do, give up? Retire? Come on man.”
