      Ecuador could be BOOTED OUT of 2022 World Cup as Fifa open disciplinary proceedings over fielding ‘ineligible player’

      ECUADOR could be booted out of the World Cup – for fielding an ineligible player.Chile lodged a formal complaint over the status of right-back Byron Castillo, who has previously faced accusations he was actually born in the Colombian border city of Tumaco.

      Castillo played in eight of Ecuador’s qualifiers as they finished in the fourth and final automatic slot and were drawn alongside Qatar, Holland and Senegal last month.
      But Fifa have now announced it has opened formal disciplinary proceedings “in relation to the potential ineligibility” of the player.
      This would see Ecuador stripped of all their points from those matches.
      That includes Ecuador’s draw against Chile and a 2-0 win last November – which put Chile on the brink of elimination.

      Castillo’s background has been the topic of speculation for some time with Ecuadorian officials previously holding concerns about his eligibility.
      Carlos Manzur, the vice president of Ecuador’s football federation, suggested that Castillo previously was not called up due to worries about his eligibility.

      Yesterday there was a national outcry following our front page. BBC Radio Two star Jeremy Vine was flooded with calls from fans after asking phone-in listeners: “Is it wrong to ditch the Three Lions song?”
      He added: “The FA is apparently thinking about dropping the iconic song over fears it is ‘arrogant’. Is that a good idea or just woke nonsense?”

      Former England World Cup star Peter Reid blasted moves to replace the song on Nick Ferrari’s LBC show.
      Peter, 65, said: “England fans are great, they sing and get behind the team. I don’t see that offending anybody or making us seem arrogant.
      “I had a look at the lyrics and they’re brilliant. Nothing in there, I don’t think, makes us arrogant or offends anybody.”
      TV star Vernon Kay said the song was part of our football history, adding: “It unites England fans.”
      Nadine Dorries, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, led political support. She said: “For more than 25 years, Three Lions has endured as the anthem of English football.

      WRITING a football anthem that catches on is much harder than you might think. Which is what makes Three Lions such a precious jewel that we must protect.
      Its simplicity is key to its success. Simple words. Simple tune. But don’t let that fool you — getting it right is anything but simple.
      Doesn’t matter how famous you are, like The Spice Girls, who were about the biggest band on the planet when they released (How Does It Feel to Be) On Top of the World — the ill-fated official tune for the 1998 World Cup.
      Or Mick Hucknall, who was a kind of old-fashioned Ed Sheeran when he wrote We’re In This Together for Euro 96. The Lightning Seeds were a pretty cool indie band in 1996 and Baddiel and Skinner had a funny TV show.
      Together they managed to write a simple song with, crucially, two parts that everyone could sing — “It’s coming home . . . ” along with the rousing “Three lions on a shirt . . . ’ bit that connected and resonated with the crowds on the terraces.
      Where else do thousands of people, sometimes tens of thousands, all sing together, totally united and completely unaccompanied, other than at the football?
      And the best way to get that massed triumphant choir going is to come up with something that harks back to the tradition of ­terrace chants, which all have a faint glimmer of the proud tradition of folk music. Written by ordinary people, for ordinary people.
      Vindaloo, which I wrote with the comedian Keith Allen, had a one-word chorus, “Vindaloo”, and a one-note refrain, (“We’re gonna score one more than you”).
      I played a demo version to a music exec and he shook his head and said, “Sorry mate, you’ll never get that on the radio. It won’t work.” I swear, I’ve still not once heard it on the radio but people are still singing it six World Cups later.
      Ultimately the people decide what they want to sing. I’ve always loved Sweet Caroline. It’s a great singalong. But it has absolutely nothing to do with football or England and hearing it played at England matches makes me feel completely nauseous.
      Please don’t suggest that Three Lions is “offensive to other nations” and wokewash us with this irrelevant nonsense.
      Be warned, those who would wield the word “official”. You’ve literally never got it right. It’s coming home, you morons

      Tory MP Lee Anderson, a Nottingham Forest fan, said: “This is unbelievable arrogance from the suits at the FA. It only shows how far the people at the top are from the ordinary football fan.

      Senior sources at the FA had given The Sun detailed accounts of how bosses wanted to get rid of the song. Yesterday England legend Paul Gascoigne told us: “You can’t take that song off us. This woke nonsense has no place in football.”
      TalkTV presenter Piers Morgan added: “This song is all about wallowing in 30 years of pain and hurt and not winning anything. How can anyone say it’s arrogant?”
      In their feeble bid to downplay us rumbling their plot, the FA said yesterday: “Contrary to reports this morning, the FA still plays Three Lions at major Wembley matches and has never had any intention of doing otherwise.

      All 32 nations at the World Cup in Qatar in November and December must nominate a song to be played in the build-up to kick-off.
      Three Lions — by comedy duo David Baddiel and Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds — celebrates England’s endless dream of a first tournament triumph since 1966.
      But FA chiefs are set to drop it amid fears other nations believe it is “arrogant” to sing about England being the home of football.

      Rival teams have also mocked and abused the song’s chant.
      Croatia’s players used the classic as a motivational tool ahead of their 2-1 triumph over Gareth Southgate’s battlers at the 2018 World Cup semi-final in Moscow.
      Italian fans at Wembley sarcastically sang: “It’s coming to Rome” after the Azzuri’s penalties win over The Three Lions in the Euro 2020 final.
      A much-travelled Three Lions supporters’ source told The Sun: “Fans will sing what they like and couldn’t really give a monkey’s what is ‘official’ or not.
      “So expect to hear ‘Football’s Coming Home’ sung in Qatar in the stands regardless.
      “Other nations might think we’re arrogant when we sing that England is football’s home and they’ve teased us about it in the past but it’s just friendly banter.”
       Neil Diamond’s stadium singalong Sweet Caroline is now favourite to become the official pre-match song.
      Three Lions became the official pre-match song in 1996 — when England lost on penalties yet again in the semi-final against Germany.

      “We have a great squad and a great chance in Qatar so it might be better to look forward from now on rather than back. “Gareth Southgate isn’t involved in the debate but he may well have decidedly mixed memories about 1996 after missing the penalty which knocked us out in the semi.
      “Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline was a huge hit with fans singing their hearts out at Euro 2020 and must be a strong contender now.
      “It has nothing to do with football but it’s a great feelgood song — and has absolutely no negativity attached to it.”
      FA chiefs will not announce their final decision on the song choice until after the summer. But Sun sources revealed internal discussions about a new song are already under way.
      David Baddiel revealed last year that he suspected the FA hated his Three Lions anthem – over fears that its lyrics could offend other footballing nations.
      He said: “Neil Diamond was set up as a kind of rival during the last Euro competition.
      “There was a thing which my manager feels was actually a conspiracy set up by The FA — they don’t really like Three Lions.
      “I think it’s the notion — misinterpreted by many people — that football’s coming home means that England owns football and we are the homeland of football. Which historically is the case. We were the first one to ratify the rules of the game.
      “But somehow that’s offensive to other FAs – like the Croatian FA or whatever.”
      Sweet Caroline came to prominence after England’s epic 2-0 win over Germany at Euro 2020.
      Offical Wembley DJ Tony Perry decided the track summed up the mood in the stadium. It was then adopted by the fans and rang out at every game until the final.
      The song has long been a favourite with rugby fans.. However, the 1969 hit is most associated with baseball where it’s sung at every home game of the Boston Red Sox.
      The tradition of the official England song was spawned at the 1966 World Cup with “World Cup Willie”.’

      England fans are snubbing Qatar World Cup, and who can blame them with extortionate flights and pricey food and drink

      ENGLAND fans will not be flocking to the World Cup in Qatar —  you can hardly blame them.Extortionate flights, accommodation worries, plus the price of food and drink has put off many.

      England have been given 2,489 seats for their opening game against Iran at the Khalifa Stadium on November 21.
      All of the England Supporters Travel Club members who applied were successful.
      When you consider there are about 15,000 members, it illustrates many are staying at home.
