Nunez grew up in a poor neighbourhood called Los Piratas in Artigas – a Uruguayan village on the borders of Brazil.
His upbringing in football was a tough one, suffering potentially significant knee injuries that required surgery as an 18-year-old.
Despite this, his biggest attribute was always one of physicality and power, and after scoring 16 goals in his first season with Spanish second division outfit Almeria, Benfica took a punt on Nunez in September 2020 signing a five-year deal for a club-record £20m.
Upon completing that move, it is said Nunez cried with his father in their family home having achieved his dreams after overcoming his knee issues.

But despite adapting well to the Portuguese league in his first season, the tears soon returned as his knee troubles resurfaced in May 2021.

But which club will he choose? SunSport understands that despite admiring Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Nunez and his camp do not see it as the perfect fit.
In their eyes, he needs space to run, a physical style of play and a guarantee of minutes, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham all preferable locations, while Man Utd are viewed as more of a risk.

Just watching him against Klopp’s men in the quarter final first leg in Lisbon showed what he is capable of, bravely battling with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate before pouncing on the latter’s mistake with a true poacher’s finish.
He also took his goal in the 3-3 draw at Anfield superbly.
No wonder Klopp praised him before that second leg.

Often a talented teenager coming through the ranks at a top-six club is widely whispered about before their first-team breakthrough.
Yet nobody had seen him coming.

And the X factor for any striker is the ability to deliver under pressure – a quality impossible to measure until he is given a first-team opportunity.
Those two and a half years under Mourinho were not a complete wasteland.
Rashford continued to play regularly but, more often than not, on the wing – and it never felt as though the Portuguese believed in him.

His disgusted reaction when Rashford squandered a chance against Young Boys in the Champions League group stage seemed to sum up their relationship.
Yet even before he was appointed as United’s caretaker boss, Solskjaer had recognised a kindred goal-poaching spirit in Rashford.
Four seasons ago, he’d give the young Englishman a pep talk about rediscovering that calmness in front of goal which had given him his breakthrough in the first place.
As soon as Solskjaer took over as caretaker boss, Rashford was revitalised.
He scored the first goal of the Norwegian’s reign after just three minutes at Cardiff, then netted again against Bournemouth.
Although his magnificent assist for Paul Pogba was the highlight of that match, with United clearly discovering their joie de vivre.
England boss Southgate, like Solskjaer, stumbled upon his current job as a lucky caretaker, having suffered relegation in his previous Premier League job.
And even though he missed a crucial spot-kick in the Euro 2020 Final, he still remains a key part of the Three Lions’ future plans.

Christian Eriksen ‘snubbed’ signing for Man Utd after promising Daniel Levy that he would never join a rival

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN snubbed Manchester United over a promise made to Tottenham owner Daniel Levy in 2017, according to reports.The Daily Mail claimed the Dane’s agent Martin Schoots passed on the vow that he would not join another London club out of respect to Spurs.

And Eriksen, now 30, apparently extended his promise to all English clubs when United’s interest came out.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was hoping to secure an £80million deal for the playmaker but failed to land his man.
Eriksen handed in a transfer request in 2019 after outlining his desire for a new challenge.
That sparked plenty of interest with both Real and Atletico Madrid joining Juventus in the hunt.
But the Spurs ace eventually joined Inter Milan for £17million in 2020 as his contract began to run down.
After initially struggling, Eriksen found his form under Antonio Conte and helped Inter win their first Serie A title since 2010.
