He had been heavily linked with a fight against WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury – who even flew to Iceland in August to goad the strongman into a clash.
But now Bjornsson has confirmed he is hanging up the gloves, claiming he never truly loved the sport.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: “I’ll admit there was a time when there was talks between Tyson Fury and I, his team and my team, there was build-up but that never went through.
“Now I’ve made a hard decision and the reason why it took me so long to make this video was because this is actually a very difficult thing to talk about.

“I’ve made a decision to move on from boxing, to not compete in boxing again, to say goodbye to boxing and just not fight again.
“I had a good run, I did it for two-and-a-half years. It was nice to do so, because when I first started I had a lot of people not believing in me.”
He continued: “I proved a lot of people wrong by working hard and I made some people proud.
“In reality, the passion was never there, it was all grind as I never really loved the sport.

“That’s just the truth, but I have a lot of respect for the sport because I know how much work goes into it.”
Bjornsson, who won the World’s Strongest Man contest in 2018, will now focus on surpassing a landmark he set three years ago.
In 2019, the Scandinavian broke the world record for throwing a 25kg weight over a 20-foot-tall bar.
And speaking about his future, he said: “It was like ‘what should I do?’ Spend the last few years as an athlete doing something I don’t love, or should I focus on my businesses and the things that I love, like lifting weights?

“I have two new goals, I have two new cats and I want to break one of my world records.
“The world record I’m trying to beat is the weight over the bar with 25kg. My record is 20 feet and two inches, so I have to beat that to break my own record.”

And he took the opportunity away from the pitch to pose – alongside his wife Antonela – for a picture with Harington – who is best known for his role as Jon Snow in the hit TV show Game of Thrones.
But Messi wasn’t the only PSG star that Harington met in the French capital.
He was also filmed being greeted by Real Madrid and Spain icon Sergio Ramos.
The centre-back came into the room and handed the actor his PSG shirt.

Harington appeared incredibly grateful for the gesture as he shared a hug with the defender.
Meanwhile, things didn’t quite go to plan for PSG on the pitch at Le Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.
They did take a slender lead into half-time as Kylian Mbappe tucked away a penalty.
But Benfica hit back through a spot kick of their own in the second period as Joao Mario earned the Portuguese side a second draw in six days against PSG.

The match took place just hours after the Ligue 1 champions had been rocked by news of Mbappe wanting to leave the club.
The 23-year-old superstar only signed a new lucrative deal with PSG in the summer.
But his relationship with the club is already said to be “completely broken” and there is thought to be “no way back”.
Real Madrid and Liverpool have both been linked with a move for the World Cup winner. More

Lewis Hamilton jokes he’ll watch Game of Thrones behind the wheel to kill boredom as he’s stuck near back of Monza grid

LEWIS HAMILTON joked overtaking is so tough at Monza that he might as well watch Game of Thrones behind the wheel! The seven-time world champ starts today’s race down in 19th, despite qualifying fifth, after taking a fourth power unit of the season.
Lewis Hamilton will start the Monza Grand Prix in 19th place and isn’t expecting to go much higherCredit: PA
Charles Leclerc claimed pole and is the ONLY man to start today’s Italian GP in the position he qualified — due to a crazy amount of grid penalties for new engines and components.
It meant that race chiefs took nearly FOUR HOURS to work out final grid positions.
And Hamilton may turn to new Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon — as he fears being stuck behind a string of cars at the so-called Temple of Speed.
He said: “I was behind Valtteri Bottas in practice and couldn’t catch him or pass him. So I hope I don’t get stuck tomorrow.

“But I imagine I will be in a DRS train, sitting there and hoping for chances through strategy and tyre degradation from other drivers.
“I was thinking of taking my iPad with me in the race and, when I am in a DRS line, I will just watch Game of Thrones.”
Leclerc set the quickest lap to clinch pole for Ferrari in their home race. But the Monaco man — who won here from pole in 2019 — will need to take full advantage in a bid to close down Max Verstappen’s 109-point title lead.
Leclerc said: “It was not an easy qualifying session. I knew there was potential in the car but needed to put everything together in Q3 and I was happy to do it.

“I really hope we can do what we did in 2019. I just went for it and it worked out.”
Verstappen had a five-place grid drop to seventh but is confident of working through the field as he did at the Belgian GP — where he won despite starting in 14th place.
He said: “For tomorrow in the race, I hope we will be strong. It will be an interesting battle. I will try to stay out of trouble and work my way forward.”
George Russell lines up in second place and Lando Norris will start in third.
But Mercedes driver Russell cannot see past a Verstappen win and added: “You’ve got to be stupid to bet against it.
“He just needs to keep his nose clean in the first two laps and he’ll cruise to victory.”

London-born Williams driver Alex Albon pulled out due to appendicitis. He missed final practice, resulting in reserve driver Nyck de Vries being called up.
He qualified in 13th but will start in eighth, owing to the string of grid penalties. More

He flew out to Iceland with his dad, John Fury, last month to confront the strongman.
But, the duo ended up AXE THROWING instead when they found out that Bjornsson was in Rome filming a movie.

And their mission was to “find” Game of Thrones star Bjornsson following talk of an exhibition bout.
But the former world’s strongest man was instead in Rome filming a movie, so Fury had to find other ways to entertain himself.
That included buying Vikings hats, heading to the pub and going axe throwing.
After Bjornsson caught wind of Fury’s trip to his homeland, he demanded a fight contract be sent his way.

Fury, 33, meanwhile retired from boxing a month later knocking out Dillian Whyte, 34, at Wembley.
But it appears his hiatus was short-lived after claiming he was coming back to face Derek Chisora, 38, in an unlikely trilogy bout.
The fight was first eyed for December but shortly after, Fury appeared to suggest his rematch with Chisora was already off.

He said: “Do you know the funny this is – people love to do deals and then ask for more or change the goalposts.
“But the usual thing for me is then I tell them to go get f****d. So there we are.”
It would free up Fury to fight Bjornsson in a extraordinary exhibition.
With the Gypsy King still keeping hold of his WBC title, an undisputed decider remains on the cards.

It comes after Bjornsson said: “Yes, there’s been talks, yes it’s been back and forth between me and Tyson Fury.
“He mentioned he wanted to come here to Iceland, we’ll see.
“I can’t go into details, but if things work out I would gladly dance with Tyson and I would gladly and be honoured to share the ring with him.
“I’m a man of belief, do I believe I can beat him? He is a lot better than me technically, I know that, his boxing is a lot better than myself.

“There’s no doubt about that but he’s never fought a man my size, my strength, and we all know in boxing all it takes is one punch and I’m a heavy hitter, you saw that against Eddie Hall.”
Fury, 33, announced his retirement from boxing one month after Bjornsson toppled Hall, 34, in their mammoth match-up in Dubai.
But Nelson suggested the Gypsy King is being lined up to face Bjornsson, 33, in a non-sanctioned exhibition.
He revealed: “It would be a six to eight round exhibition contest, won’t it?
“What an experience for him and great for both their profiles. It’s an exhibition, so no one is getting knocked out you wouldn’t think.
“You would hope not anyway, but you never know.”
