The result meant David Moyes’ side progressed to the final 3-1 on aggregate and will now meet Fiorentina.
Pablo Fornals’ 94th minute strike sealed the victory, sparking AZ Alkmaar hooligans to attack a group of travelling friends and family of the Hammers’ players and coaching staff sat behind the dugout.

We reported how several West Ham players, including sporting director Mark Noble, rushed to help protect them from the thugs – who were dressed in black and wearing balaclavas.
Now footage shot by a witness in the stadium shows how a fan stepped in to defend those behind him in the terrifying scenes before another equally-brave individual stepped in too.

After a small army of Dutch yobs broke through a gate and descended into the away stand, they attempted to come up a staircase but found an almost immovable object their way in the form of the heroic fan.
The clip shows the individual, dressed in a green T-shirt and black coat, swinging for his life to defend himself and those around him from the attack.
Despite being vastly outnumbered, both he and another Hammers fan manage to fend-off the onslaught and the actions soon went viral online following the disgusting incident as he was quickly hailed on social media.
One fan wrote: “The legend. Stopped the home fans from getting to the players’ families.”

Another tweeted: “That’s an amalgam of the 300, Game of Thrones (Hodor) and Star Wars Episode 3 (the high ground). Outstanding work.”
A fellow fan said: “Two blokes at the top of the stairs took on Holland and won.”
As another said: “Not a West Ham fan but fair play to them two and making a stand.”
A fellow fan wanted him “knighted” while others called for the club to give them free tickets to the final.
One wrote: “Needs final tickets for him and his family . Free a season ticket for life. And free beers. Up the Hammers.”
While a fellow footy fan added: “Get this man sorted with a ticket and travel to the final.”
Lucas Paqueta, Aaron Cresswell, and Flynn Downes were all involved in the chaos and were held back by security and stewards.
Director of football Noble tried in vain to restrain Michail Antonio, who leapt over advertising hoardings to defend the fans and families.
Members of the Irons coaching staff including Kevin Nolan were seen berating stewards for their failure to intervene.
While captain Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen were also seen confronting members of the crowd, with the former appearing to throw an object in their direction.
London-born Alkmaar boss Pascal Jansen admitted he was “ashamed” of the ugly scenes, while Moyes’ elderly father was also caught up in the mayhem.
Moyes said: “I can’t explain what happened and why it happened. The players were involved because it was the family section. That was probably the reason for the reaction.
“I don’t want that in any way to blight the night because the West Ham fans weren’t looking for trouble. Hopefully they’ll look into it.

“My family were there and I had friends in that section. You’re hoping they would try and get themselves away from it. I didn’t recognise it because I was too happy.
“Security wanted to take me inside but I had to make sure my players weren’t involved.”
In last week’s first leg at the London Stadium, members of Jansen’s family were moved from their seats behind the away dugout after a verbal confrontation with West Ham fans.
Jansen added: “What happened last week was very unfortunate, but I feel a bit ashamed it happened in our stadium.
“It should not be happening. You have to stay in control of your emotions.”
There were also clashes between West Ham and AZ fans ahead of kick-off, who again were masked as they caused mayhem on the streets of Alkmaar.
A local news outlet has described a “grim atmosphere” as footie fans in hoodies sparked fights earlier in the evening.
In footage shared to social media, one person was captured being horrifically attacked by a group, with one member using what looked like a bicycle as a weapon.

On Twitter, more clips revealed large swarms of fans racing through the streets holding what appears to be chairs.
It is understood West Ham supporters were caught up in the mix when Alkmaar and FC Groningen fans brawled.

But Bjornsson turned his back on the sport in order to become a boxer.
The mega-hitter slimmed down and built up his stamina before delivering a stunning KO of rival Eddie Hall.
And Bjornsson then declared he was retiring in order to assess his future options.
But the 34-year-old, who played Gregor ‘The Mountain’ Clegane on hit TV show Game of Thrones, has now made TWO major announcements.

In news which is sure to delight strength fans, Bjornsson has declared his intent to set a new raw powerlifting world-record.
The sport sees hulks aim to hit their top weights in three events – deadlifts, squats and bench-press.
The numbers from all three are then combined for a final total score.
And Bjornsson is confident he can beat the current record of 1182.5kg, held by Dan Bell, at the end of 2023.

That would be three-and-a-half years after setting a new deadlift world record of 501kg, which sparked his boxing rivalry with Hall.
But there’s further news from Bjornsson, who has also confirmed a return to professional strongman in 2024.
His last event was the successful Arnold Classic in 2020.
And Bjornsson reckons his foray into powerlifting will serve as a great stepping stone for a return to his former love.
The current World’s Strongest Man is Scottish behemoth Tom Stoltman, who has won the trophy two times in a row.
But it remains to be seen if 2018 winner Bjornsson competes in the tournament, having previously vowed to never work with organisers Giants Live again.
However, he does plan on regaining his Arnold Classics crown, which he won three times in a row before leaving strongman.
Bjornsson said in a YouTube video: “I love training heavy and I want to build my legacy in the strength world.

“So my decision is to come back into powerlifting. I want to break the all-time raw powerlifting world record.
“Powerlifting is squat, bench and deadlift, three lifts. And I want to break the all-time total, which is today 1182.5kg.
“That record is held by Dan Bell, a great powerlifter. Who knows, maybe before I break it he will break it again.
“I like competition, I like to be challenged. The goal is to do it at the end of the year.
“It’s crazy but I have a lot of muscle and strength memory, so slowly but surely my strength is coming back.
“Hopefully my body will be good to me like it was before, stay injury-free.
“So that’s the plan, to be very successful in powerlifting, build my legacy, build my name in the strength world.
“[Then in 2024] I will go back to strongman and give my absolute best there again.
“I want to compete at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio and Rogue Invitationals.

“Those are the two shows I have my eyes on. I want to win those, I truly believe when I break the powerlifting record my starting strengths are going to be very good and will translate well into strongman.
“That’s the plan. Big announcement, big goals, but I’m a big guy with a big heart with a lot of ambition and big dreams.” More

Lewis Hamilton jokes he’ll watch Game of Thrones behind the wheel to kill boredom as he’s stuck near back of Monza grid

LEWIS HAMILTON joked overtaking is so tough at Monza that he might as well watch Game of Thrones behind the wheel! The seven-time world champ starts today’s race down in 19th, despite qualifying fifth, after taking a fourth power unit of the season.

Charles Leclerc claimed pole and is the ONLY man to start today’s Italian GP in the position he qualified — due to a crazy amount of grid penalties for new engines and components.
It meant that race chiefs took nearly FOUR HOURS to work out final grid positions.
And Hamilton may turn to new Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon — as he fears being stuck behind a string of cars at the so-called Temple of Speed.
He said: “I was behind Valtteri Bottas in practice and couldn’t catch him or pass him. So I hope I don’t get stuck tomorrow.

“But I imagine I will be in a DRS train, sitting there and hoping for chances through strategy and tyre degradation from other drivers.
“I was thinking of taking my iPad with me in the race and, when I am in a DRS line, I will just watch Game of Thrones.”
Leclerc set the quickest lap to clinch pole for Ferrari in their home race. But the Monaco man — who won here from pole in 2019 — will need to take full advantage in a bid to close down Max Verstappen’s 109-point title lead.
Leclerc said: “It was not an easy qualifying session. I knew there was potential in the car but needed to put everything together in Q3 and I was happy to do it.

“I really hope we can do what we did in 2019. I just went for it and it worked out.”
Verstappen had a five-place grid drop to seventh but is confident of working through the field as he did at the Belgian GP — where he won despite starting in 14th place.
He said: “For tomorrow in the race, I hope we will be strong. It will be an interesting battle. I will try to stay out of trouble and work my way forward.”
George Russell lines up in second place and Lando Norris will start in third.
But Mercedes driver Russell cannot see past a Verstappen win and added: “You’ve got to be stupid to bet against it.
“He just needs to keep his nose clean in the first two laps and he’ll cruise to victory.”
