Neymar was reduced to tears after Brazil lost in the Copa America final
Neymar and Messi embrace after the final whistle
It did not take long for Messi to lift Neymar’s spirits
A single Angel Di Maria goal was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for Argentina, who ended a 28-year wait for silverware.
And although Messi was thrilled with the outcome and celebrated by being thrown into the air by his team-mates, he still found time to console Neymar.
The pair embraced surrounded by players, media and officials before Messi went to lift the trophy.
Afterwards, Messi sat with his former Barcelona teammate with his winners’ medal around his neck.
And he was able to cheer up Neymar, cracking a joke which had the Brazilian laughing.
Messi knows all too well what it is like to be in Neymar’s position having lost in the Copa America final in both 2015 and 2016.
The Argentine also lost in the 2014 World Cup final after Mario Gotze scored an extra-time winner for Germany.

Neymar’s wait for silverware with Brazil will continue but at 29 he will be hopeful that his time will come soon.

Inside Argentina’s wild dressing room party as topless Lionel Messi dances with Copa trophy as team sing his name

LIONEL MESSI ended his international tournament hoodoo as Argentina won the Copa America on Saturday.A first-half goal from Angel Di Maria ended a run of 28 years without a trophy for La Albiceleste.

Messi keeps his hands on the trophy in the Argentina dressing room
A happy Messi fistbumps for Sergio Aguero’s Instagram video
And for captain Messi the victory is even sweeter as it came against Brazil in the Maracana.
He told TyC Sports: “The truth is that this is crazy. There would be no better moment than this. The happiness is immense, I knew that at some point it was going to happen. The happiness I feel right now indescribable.
“I needed to get rid of the thorn of being able to achieve something with the national team, I was very close for many years. I left sad a few times, but I knew I’d get it someday. I think there is no better moment than this.
“This match will go down in history, not only because we became champions, but because it is against Brazil and on their land. I thank God for giving me this moment.
“I’m very happy! I dreamed about this many times.”
The 34-year-old came close to winning the Copa America in 2015 and 2016 but Argentina lost on penalties on both occasions, with Messi guilty of missing a spot-kick in 2016.
But this time around it was joy for the Barcelona legend, and there were jubilant scenes in the dressing room and on the pitch.
After the final whistle several Argentina players rushed over to Messi to hug and celebrate with the icon.

Argentina are officially the 2021 Copa America winners!
The Albiceleste just won South America’s highest honour for the first time since 1993.
And that means the Argentines have now equalled Uruguay’s record of 15 titles.
A night that will be remembered forever!

    NO MORE MESSI ABOUT
This is how much value the Copa America has for Lionel Messi.
Messi initially decided to leave Argentina in 2016 but his tenacious character and winners’ mentality didn’t allow him to depart empty-handed.
The Barcelona legend stood around and promised that he will not retire without an international honour.
And so his long and grueling journey has finally come to a happy ending…

    TOP CLASS
Argentina give Brazil a guard of honour as they receive their silver medals.
The Selecao players are devastated and some can’t hold back their tears.
Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar is among them as the Brazilians came so close to lifting the trophy for the second consecutive time in their own turf.
The Albiceleste showed immense class after a rough final…

    AWARDS
We start things off with some individual awards before the big one.
Argentina star Angel Di Maria gets awarded as Man of the Match after the final.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is named as the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
And of course Lionel Messi is honoured as the competition’s top scorer with four goals and five assists in seven matches.
That one is a bit odd as Messi finished as joint-first with Colombia’s Luis Diaz

    HEART OF A LION
    Lionel Messi has done it!
Messi has won everything on club level with Barcelona, he also counts a record six Ballon d’Or honours.
But it took the 34-year-old 17 years to finally win an international title with Argentina.
And by God, he did it in style as he finishes the tournament as his country’s record goalscorer and most capped player with 76 goals in 150 appearances

Brazil thought they equalised on 53 minutes when Richarlison picked up a pass from the right and beat Emiliano Martinez thanks to some help from Cristian Romero’s deflection but the Everton star was caught offside.
The same player failed again a minute later when his powerful shot forced a brilliant save from Martinez.
But Brazil’s biggesrt chance occurred on 87 minutes when Gabriel Barbosa got the ball inside the area following a poor free-kick by Neymar and his shot was denied again by the Argentina goalkeeper.
Lionel Messi got the opportunity to put the game to bed a minute later when De Paul set him up in front of Ederson but the Barcelona legend got a heavy touch and that allowed the Manchester City shot-stopper to pick the ball up.

FIFA boss Gianni Infantino watches Copa America final before hot-footing it to London for Euro 2020 showpiece

FIFA PRESIDENT Gianni Infantino was spotted at the Copa America final between Argentina and Brazil – less than 24 hours before the culmination of Euro 2020.Infantino was in attendance at the Maracana for the final of the oldest international football tournament just hours before he was due to jet off to London for England’s clash with Italy at Wembley.

But he WON’T have to quarantine when he arrives in England for the Euro 2020 finalCredit: AFP
A flight from Rio de Janeiro to London takes around 12 hours, meaning he’ll reach the home of football with just hours to spare.
But the 51-year-old will be EXEMPT from hotel quarantine – despite touching down in the UK from a red list country.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has waived quarantine rules for VIPs attending the tournament.
They do, however, have to leave the country within 24 hours of their arrival.
Footy fans were fuming at Infantino’s freedom to enter the UK without quarantine and took to Twitter to express their frustration.
One said: “Gianni Infantino the President of @FIFAcom is at the Maracana for the #CopaAmericaFINAL where #COVID19 cases are sky high and will be at Wembley later for the #euro2020final.
“It clearly isn’t what you know but who you know!”

Another said: “Why does #Infantino get to travel from #Brazil to #London, and go to the #EURO2020 Final ON THE SAME DAY, without isolating, #FIFA #UEFA, #BorisJohnson, #SajidJavid?”
And another said: “Infantino at the Copa America final. No doubt he’ll fly to London and beat isolating to be at the euro 2020 final afterwards.”
One remarked: “Gianni Infantino in Rio for the Copa América final and then flying to London for the Euro 2020 final later today.
“I’d be giving this potential cocktail of variants a wide berth over the next couple of weeks.”
Another remarked: “Not Infantino travelling from brazil to London tonight. Chile…covid is nothing for the rich.”
England booked their place in their first major final in 55 years with a 2-1 victory over Denmark on Thursday.

And the Three Lions chief has urged his troops not to let the size of the occasion overwhelm them.
He said: “I didn’t say very much at all before the semi-final because I felt the team were totally prepared.
“I normally assess where they are during the day. We usually have a meeting about the set plays in the morning, and then I’ll speak to them before we leave the hotel.
“You’re two hours before the game at that point. You want the message to resonate but it’s about how you make the players feel as much as anything. We don’t need to be getting them overhyped.
“There will be enough energy and excitement around the stadium due to the occasion itself.
“We need to keep that calmness that we have had for the whole month. We’ve dealt with it really well.
” The game against Scotland, we were disappointed with how it went, but it was a big occasion for us.
“Germany was another one and then the quarter- and the semi-final. The players have coped remarkably well and I’m certain they will do so again.”

Argentina 1 Brazil 0: Angel Di Maria delivers Copa America glory for Lionel Messi and Co with brilliant lob

An odd goal from Manchester United misfit Di Maria was enough to clinch victory at the famous Maracana.
Barcelona great Messi finally got his hands on a trophy while wearing the famous blue and white Argentina stripes.
Messi, 34, has won everything possible in the club game during his stellar Barcelona career.
But beating Brazil in their own back yard just months after national icon Diego Maradona died will undoubtedly go down as one of his career highlights.
Argentina hadn’t won a trophy in 28 years despite Messi’s best efforts.
They lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany in this same stadium and suffered back to back Copa America final defeats to Chile in 2015 and 2016.
The latter of those defeats proved so painful that Messi was almost sent into international retirement.

But he returned to national team duty to captain Lionel Scaloni’s men to Copa America glory in what might be the last time he plays in the tournament.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino was in the stands at the Maracana – hours before he’s due in London for the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.
A tournament that has been blighted by Covid chaos had a fitting final as well as some guests for the final were found to have brought false tests.
Argentina were due to co-host the competition with Colombia before it was switched to Brazil at just two weeks’ notice.
The tournament was played behind-closed-doors but each team were allowed to invite up to 2,200 guests for the final.
Di Maria’s exquisite first-half finish was enough to settle a tense game between the two international heavyweights.
The PSG winger latched onto Rodrigo De Paul’s ball over the top and lifted it over the onrushing Ederson in the 22nd minute.

Brazil pushed for an equaliser in the second half and Richarlison had a goal disallowed for offside.
Gabriel Barbosa also had a penalty appeal turned down after a challenge from Gonzalo Montiel in the box.
Neymar was largely kept quiet by a stout Argentine defensive performance as his former Barcelona team-mate Messi had the last laugh.
Messi had a glorious chance to wrap it up with minutes to spare but lost his footing when trying to round Ederson.
Messi shared the player of the tournament prize with Neymar, and the pair shared a warm embrace after the final whistle.

The 34-year-old will return to Europe to sort out his club future after his Barcelona deal expired at the end of June.
He is now officially a free agent and woke up unemployed while on international duty – but expected to sign a deal to stay at Barcelona.
Messi helped Argentina win South America’s international showpiece for a 15th time and will have his eyes on the World Cup in Qatar next year.

Neymar lashes out at Brazil fans supporting Argentina legend Lionel Messi in Copa America 2021 final

NEYMAR has blasted Brazilians who are throwing their weight behind Argentina ahead of the Copa America final. It is reported compatriots of the PSG and Brazil superstar – who are also Lionel Messi fans – will be cheering their nation’s fiercest rivals during their clash.
Lionel Messi and Neymar will go head-to-head in the Copa America finalCredit: Getty
These include Brazilian sports TV journalist Fabiola Andrade.
She explained in an Instagram post: “Before stoning me in a public square, let me explain: I love Brazil, Brazilian football…I have several Argentine friends. But I’m not going to root for Argentina in the Copa America final because of them, no. I cheer because I love #football and @leomessi This guy needs to win a title with his country’s shirt! For justice!”
Brazil fans have struggled to get enthused by the tournament with a Covid pandemic raging and last-minute changes to the competition.
Many would also like to see Messi finally lift an international trophy with Argentina.
In an Instagram story Neymar, 29, wrote: “I am Brazilian with a lot of pride and love.
“My dream was always to be in the Brazil national team and hear the fans singing.
“I never attacked, nor will attack [Brazil] if they are competing for something, whether that is in sport, a modelling competition, the Oscars.

“It’s fine, I will respect it, but go to [hell]… those who are in opposition.”

The South American football titans will be going head-to-head for the regional championship crown in Brazil’s 78,000-seater Maracana stadium.
A victory for Neymar and his team-mates in Rio would see their country claim their tenth Copa crown and a second successive trophy win in the contest.
Neymar was forced to miss the 2019 Copa America due to an ankle ligament injury he sustained during a 2-0 friendly win against Qatar in June that year.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward has scored twice and provided three assists in five games in this year’s competition.

However, the Brazil ace’s former Barcelona team-mate Messi is currently the contest’s leading scorer with four goals.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner is on course to claim the tournament’s Golden Boot.
And Messi, who is yet to win a major international trophy with Argentina, is hoping to triumph in this year’s Copa America.

The Barcelona superstar was sent off in a third-place play-off against Chile in 2019 following an altercation with Gary Medel.
And the last Copa tournament win for his side was back in 1993 when he was six.
Meanwhile, some of Brazil’s players have echoed Neymar in urging their fans to get behind their team ahead of the mouthwatering duel between the two nations on Saturday.
These include the PSG ace’s club and country team-mate Marquinhos.

The centre-back, 27, said: “It is difficult [the situation] because we see so many Brazilians, so many people in the press who are against and simply do not support the Brazilian team, who have no pleasure and pride in seeing the team, in rooting for us.
“The fans, the journalists, the Brazilian people, no matter how difficult the moment we are living, could send positive energy, good energy because the national team is a source of pride for the Brazilian fans.
“From our part, we have tried to represent the team and the fans in the best possible way, giving everything on the pitch and that’s what we’ve been doing at the Copa America.”
