Gary Lineker calls for huge FA Cup rule change after Chelsea knock out his beloved Leicester in thrilling clash

GARY LINEKER has called for a huge FA Cup rule change after Chelsea’s thrilling 4-2 win against 10-man Leicester in the quarter-finals.

A largely comfortable win against the Championship frontrunner sees the Blues book another trip to Wembley this season.

Chelsea went into half-time with a comfortable 2-0 lead after a couple of tap-ins from Marco Cucurella and Cole Palmer respectively.

Raheem Sterling could have made it 3-0 before the Blues’ second, but a tame penalty gave Leicester a fighting chance.

That chance was turned into reality when Axel Disasi fluffed a back pass straight into his goal, followed by great individual work from Mavididi to put the Foxes level.

The game turned on its head when defender Callum Doyle was sent off for a last-man challenge.

And Lineker’s beloved Leicester were doing everything they could to see the game into extra time with the chance of making it to penalties.

But the Foxes legend said after the match that he was not a fan of teams playing the full 120 minutes if teams are not going to create chances.

He said on BBC: “That is one of the many reasons I don’t like extra time.

“In FA Cup of most cup competitions except the final, I don’t understand what value extra time gives.

“Everyone is scared to make a mistake and people watching the game just want it to go to penalties anyway because it’s so entertaining.”

Late goals in normal time from Mykhailo Mudryk and Carey Chukwuemeka secured the Blues the victory.

Chelsea fans furious as Raheem Sterling appears to take penalty off Cole Palmer… before barely troubling goalkeeper

Chelsea will be very familiar with extra time after they were defeated by Virgil van Dijk’s 118th-minute goal in the Carabao Cup final in February.

While they are on track for another final they will worry if Liverpool beat Manchester United this afternoon after they lost both the Carabao and FA Cup to the Reds in 2022.
