The two-cap Scotland international has attracted a wide range of interest after scoring 22 goals in 24 games.
But he was not on target during the 1-1 draw at Tannadice.
Nicky Clark opened the scoring for Dundee United after just five minutes before Graham Dorrans levelled the scoring in the second half.
Shankland’s impressive run of form has seen him called up to Steve Clarke’s side, with his first goal coming against San Marino in October.
Rangers, Celtic, Norwich, Brentford and Everton have all looked at Shankland this season.
QPR, who are also tracking Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna, will now decide whether to launch a firm bid when the transfer window opens later this week.
Shankland started his career with Scottish side Queen’s Park before he joined Aberdeen in 2013.
After failing to cement his spot in the squad, he was shipped out on loan to Dunfermline Athletic, St Mirren and Greenock Morton.
After a two-year spell with Ayr United, he joined Dundee United earlier this year.
