      Man City star Ederson OUT of Brazil squad for World Cup qualifiers through illness – replaced by near-namesake Everson

      MANCHESTER CITY goalkeeper Ederson has withdrawn from the Brazil squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers due to illness.The Etihad No1 was due to linkup with his team-mates for their matches against Bolivia and Chile in the next few days.

      However he is believed to be suffering from a stomach problem –gastroenteritis – and has now pulled out.
      His nation have already qualified for the finals in Qatar later this year.
      So the Samba Boys will be able to manage without him.

      Poland keeper Wojciech Szczesny said that his “conscience” would not let him play against Russia as he pleaded with Fifa and Uefa to take action.
      The Juventus No 1, whose wife was born in Ukraine, said:  “I refuse to stand on the pitch and listen to the national anthem of Russia.
      “I refuse to take part in a sporting event that legitimises the actions of the Russian government.”

      POLAND and Sweden have announced they will refuse to play their World Cup play-off match against Russia after the country invaded Ukraine.Russia are scheduled to host Poland next month, with the winner facing the winner of Sweden vs Czech Republic for a place at the World Cup.

      But President of the Polish FA Cezary Kulesza has confirmed Poland will not play against Russia after their invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.
      He wrote on Twitter: “No more words, it’s time to act.
      “Due to the escalation of the aggression of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine, the Polish national team does not intend to play the play-off match against Russia.
      “This is the only right decision. We are in talks with the Swedish and Czech federations to bring forward a common position to FIFA.”
      Sweden have followed suit, saying: “The Swedish Football Association’s board has decided that the Swedish men’s national team will not play a possible playoff match against Russia – regardless of where the match is played. The Federal Board also urges Fifa to cancel the play-off matches in March in which Russia participates.”
      Fifa is aware of the gathering storm and that a decision is needed urgently.

      If Russia were kicked out either Slovakia – who came third in Russia’s qualifying group – or Hungary – who are the next team in the Nations League rankings – would be favourites to take their place.
      Poland released a joint statement with Sweden and the Czech Republic on Friday confirming they would not travel to Russia to play.
      The announcement from the nations today means they will not play the game at all.
      Bayern Munich star and Poland captain Robert Lewandowski revealed his support of the latest announcement, labelling it ‘the right decision’.
      He replied to the tweet saying: “The right decision!
      “I cannot imagine playing a match with the Russian national team in a situation when armed aggression in Ukraine continues.
      “Russian footballers and fans are not responsible for this, but we cannot pretend that nothing is happening.”
      Aston Villa star Matty Cash, who recently became a Polish citizen, also supported the decision.
      He said: “It is not an easy decision, but there are more important things in life than football.”
      Poland had been scheduled to take on Russia on March 26 in Moscow.
      Elsewhere Russia have been stripped of hosting the Champions League final in St Petersburg invading of Ukraine.
      Paris’ Stade de France will host the showpiece final on May 28 instead.
      The F1 Grand Prix scheduled for the Russian city of Sochi in September has also been axed. More

      That was cranked up when PM Boris Johnson gave public support for the idea and Chancellor Rishi Sunak promised £11m in funding.
      But senior Uefa figures counselled Wembley chiefs that a World Cup bid was doomed to failure and was unlikely to emerge as Europe’s standard-bearer, with President Aleksander Ceferin believing the joint proposal from Spain and Portugal had more chance of success.
      That advice prompted a rethink among the five nations.
      And today a joint statement confirmed that “following an extensive feasibility study”, the five associations “have agreed to focus on a bid to host Uefa Euro 2028”.
      The statement explained: “The feasibility study included an analysis of the economic impact, the political football landscape and likely costs of hosting major international tournaments.
      “On balance, the five associations have decided to focus solely on an official bid to host Uefa Euro 2028, and have agreed not to bid for the 2030 Fifa World Cup.
      “Hosting a Uefa Euro offers a similar return on investment, with the European tournament carrying a far lower delivery cost and the potential of the benefits being realised sooner.”

      Lars Hogh dead at 62: Ex-Denmark keeper who inspired Odense BK to historic win over Real Madrid dies after cancer battle

      LEGENDARY Denmark goalkeeper Lars Hogh has died at the age of 62 after a long battle with cancer.Hogh spent his entire career playing for Odense, whom he led to an unforgettable victory over Real Madrid in the UEFA Cup back in 1994.

      He also stood out during Denmark’s impressive showing at the 1986 World Cup that saw them making it to the last 16 after topping West Germany and Uruguay.
      Tributes have been pouring in for the the Danish hero, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2018.
      Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand wrote on LinkedIn: “Loving, caring, optimistic, cheerful, curious, playful, honest and generous. For me a huge inspiration and a role model.
      “He personifies the spirit of our national team. Ambitious and generous. Lars – you will always be with us.”
      Denmark captain Simon Kjaer issued the following message on Twitter: “Lars Høgh – you are one of the people who have inspired me the most!

      Hogh started his career at Odense in 1977 and proved to be a one-club man as he stayed on until his retirement in 2000.
      He amassed a whopping 871 appearances for the Danish outfit, which still stands as a club record.
      Following his retirement, he worked as a sports director for his beloved club.
      He then became a goalkeeping coach and worked with the likes of Brondby, Nordsjaelland, Denmark and of course Odense. More
