England boss says losing Williamson to injury ahead of Austria and Latvia clashes is ‘disappointing’

SARINA WIEGMAN is ‘disappointed’ to lose her stand-in captain to injury with Leah Williamson out of England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.  The Arsenal ace will miss the Lionesses’ games against Austria and Latvia this month, while Jordan Nobbs has been recalled.

Arsenal say their influential centre-back, who plays in midfield for the national team, suffered a serious hamstring injury ruling her out of action for the rest of this year.
After naming her squad, England boss Wiegman said: “Leah is very disappointed and I’m very disappointed.
“We actually didn’t expect it would be this bad that she couldn’t join us.
“It’s so very disappointing first of all for herself, but also for the team and also for Arsenal as they have some major games coming up.”
With Williamson and Steph Houghton both out with injuries, Wiegman needs a new temporary captain to lead her 23-strong squad ahead of their clashes with Austria and Latvia on November 27 and 30.
However, the former Netherlands head coach was tight-lipped on who her new stand-in skipper will be.

The England boss added: “With Leah’s injury (being) so fresh we haven’t discussed [the captaincy] we are taking our time to make that decision and then we’ll talk to the squad.”
Wiegman has left Lucy Staniforth off her 23-player list while Lucy Bronze and Ellie Roebuck are yet to return to fitness.
But Arsenal ace Nobbs is back in the side following her returning to fitness and form for the Gunners.
And the midfielder could feature in England’s games against Austria at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on November 27 and Latvia at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium on November 30.

The 2021 Ballon d’Or nominee is just two goals short of equalling Kelly Smith’s international scoring record of 46.
On Austria’s threat as opponents, Wiegman added: “They have some players that we really should be aware of – for example [Nicole] Billa their centre forward and an experienced goalkeeper who plays for Arsenal.
“I’m looking forward to it because it’s a game at a higher level, but I think we will have more possession more than them.”

England XI for World Cup 2022: SunSport experts pick their teams and squads to lead us to glory at World Cup 2022

ENGLAND successfully qualified for the World Cup with a 10-0 victory over San Marino on Monday night. Now, 12 months out from the tournament in Qatar, Gareth Southgate has to work out who will be in his starting XI for the first game of the finals.
England booked their place in Qatar with a comprehensive victory over San MarinoCredit: EPA
It is a daunting task for the England boss, who has a plethora of options to choose from heading into his second major tournament as manager.
So we have asked some of SunSport’s experts to decide what they feel the team should be at the Qatar World Cup.
    Here are their thoughts.
    Charlie Wyett
Here is Charlie Wyett’s line-up for the World Cup
Jude Bellingham gets into my starting line-up ahead of Kalvin Phillips. Although it would mean Phil Foden playing on the left, Bukayo Saka comes in for Raheem Sterling. I would also go with both current Chelsea wing-backs, Reece James and Ben Chilwell.
23-man squad: Pickford, Henderson, Ramsdale, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Tomori, White, James, Shaw, Chilwell, Rice, Phillips, Henderson, Bellingham, Mount, Grealish, Foden, Saka, Kane, Sterling, Greenwood, Calvert-Lewin.
    Paul Jiggins
Here is Paul Jiggins’ line-up for the World Cup
It is clear Southgate will now go with his preferred three at the back, meaning they and keeper Jordan Pickford virtually pick themselves. The manager’s biggest problem is how to pick from his embarrassment of attacking riches to feed Harry Kane. I have gone for Saka and Foden at the moment but this could change by the time the Finals come around in 12 months’ time.

23-man squad: Pickford, Ramsdale, Pope, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, James, Trippier, Coady, Mings, Rice, Phillips, Henderson, Bellingham, Grealish, Saka, Foden, Mount, Kane, Calvert-Lewin, Rashford, Sterling.
    MARTIN LIPTON
Here is Martin Lipton’s line-up for the World Cup
Raheem Sterling starts on the bench despite his Euro 2020 heroics. Bellingham has the potential to be the best central player and give real balance alongside Rice. But that means no place for Luke Shaw in the squad – because of Bukayo Saka’s versatility and Kieran Trippier’s ability to play on the left – and disappointment for Tammy Abrahams, Jadon Sancho, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, James Ward-Prowse among many.
23-man squad: Pickford, Ramsdale, Johnstone; Walker, Maguire, Stones, Tomori; James, Alexander-Arnold, Chilwell, Trippier; Rice, Bellingham, Phillips, Henderson; Mount, Foden, Grealish, Sterling, Saka; Kane, Rashford, Watkins.

    MARK IRWIN
Here is Mark Irwin’s line-up for the World Cup
Southgate will have nightmares trying to cut his squad down to 23 players and there will be some huge stars among the high profile casualties.
Try as I might, I simply cannot find a way to squeeze Marcus Rashford into my squad because Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a more natural replacement for Harry Kane should the captain be unavailable. Kieran Trippier, Jadon Sancho, Conor Coady and Mason Greenwood also fail to make the cut.
My 23-man squad: Pickford, Ramsdale, Pope, James, Alexander-Arnold, Chilwell, Shaw, Walker, Stones, Maguire, White, Mings, Phillips, Rice, Bellingham, Henderson, Foden, Mount, Sterling, Grealish, Saka, Kane, Calvert-Lewin.
    TOM BARCLAY
Here is Tom Barclay’s line-up for the World Cup
Southgate looks set to stick with three at the back after the Hungary experiment did not work.
And I think that now is the way to go given just how good Reece James and Ben Chilwell have become in the wing-back positions.
The hardest picks in my XI are Declan Rice’s midfield partner, the right centre-back spot and the right wing.
Kalvin Phillips is just shading Jordan Henderson and Jude Bellingham right now but it could easily be one of the others by the time the tournament begins.
Ben White and Marc Guehi are pressing for that right-sided centre-back spot but I think Kyle Walker’s pace, experience and all-round ability get him the nod.
Southgate’s biggest headache is most of his wide players love playing on the left – from Raheem Sterling, to Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and Emile Smith Rowe – but not the right.
BETTING SPECIAL – GET £50 IN FREE BETS WITH WILLIAM HILL
The only player to convince me on the right is Bukayo Saka, who is getting better and better every week.
23-man squad: Pickford, Ramsdale, Johnstone, Walker, Alexander-Arnold, James, Chilwell, Shaw, White, Stones, Maguire, Rice, Phillips, Henderson, Bellingham, Foden, Grealish, Saka, Mount, Sterling, Kane, Greenwood, Rashford. More

Best XI of stars who could miss Qatar 2022 World Cup include Cristiano Ronaldo, Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski

IT has been squeaky bum time in World Cup qualifiers over the past week and some interesting results have left a few superstars facing the prospect of missing out on a chance to shine in Qatar next year. Four-time world champions Italy and former European champions Portugal have been left facing the lottery of play-offs to book their places at (football’s) greatest show on earth.

Asia giants and six-time World Cup participants Japan along with inaugural World Cup winners Uruguay also have plenty of work to do.
So with England’s Lions already turning their attention to how they will handle the heat in the Middle East after breezing through qualification, we have picked out a team of global superstars who they might not have to play at next winter’s event.
    RUI PATRICIO – Portugal
The experienced Roma and former Wolves shot-stopper has just clocked up a century of appearances for his country but fumbled Dusan Tadic’s shot over the line for Serbia’s equaliser on Sunday.
The Serbs went on to claim a shock 2-1 away win over Portugal which has left the hosts facing the lottery of the play-offs to qualify for Qatar 2022.

    VICTOR LINDELOF – Sweden
Sweden captain Lindelof was gutted as they conceded a late winner against Spain on Sunday which has left the Scandinavians in March’s play-offs.
The Manchester United defender could only look on in despair as former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata stole in to chip home an 86th-minute winner.

    MATTY CASH – Poland
Aston Villa right-back Cash made his debut for Poland in the latest round of World Cup qualifiers but could not prevent a surprising 2-1 home defeat by Hungary.
Daniel Gazdag’s 80th-minute winner confirmed Paulo Sousa’s Poles in the Group I runners-up spot behind England and they will now be in the play-offs.

    LEONARDO BONUCCI – Italy
The Italians seemed to go out of their way to mess up qualification over the past week with frustrating draws against Switzerland and Northern Ireland.
It means the Euro 2020 winners and their imperious 114-cap Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci will enter the knock-out format to book their place in Qatar.

    GARETH BALE – Wales
It is the play-offs for Wales however they get on against Belgium tonight as they have already won their Nations League group.
That means Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale, who started his career as a left-back at Southampton, will undoubtedly be called upon to deliver another match-winning contribution in the knock-out games in the spring.

    TAKE KUBO – Japan
Japan and their hot-prospect winger Kubo are currently third in their play-off group behind Australia and leaders Saudi Arabia, and are heading for a play-off.
Kubo, a Real Madrid player on loan at Mallorca, is precocious enough to have sparked a squabble for his signature between Real and Barcelona – but you might not see him in Qatar.
Japan winger Kubo is tipped for big things in La LigaCredit: AP
    JORGINHO – Italy
The Chelsea midfielder is regarded as one of the best players in the Premier League at the moment but he has had a disappointing week with his country.
Draws in qualifiers against Switzerland and Northern Ireland mean the Blues star might miss out on Qatar – which would be music to the ears of most of his Prem rivals at the tournament.

    ERLING HAALAND – Norway
Any neutral is likely to say it would be a shame if Borussia Dortmund phenom Haaland misses the chance to shine in Qatar – but that is a distinct possibility now.
A goalless draw at home to Latvia means Haaland’s Norway are now in a scrap with the Netherlands and Turkey to progress from Group G.

    CRISTIANO RONALDO – Portugal
Portugal’s talisman looked close to tears as they let a lead slip against Serbia which saw them lose 2-1 and left them facing the lottery of the play-offs.
Manchester United’s main man will probably be sobbing if he does end up missing out on qualifying for a joint-record fifth World Cup appearance.

    ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI – Poland
Poland only lost once in qualifying – against England at Wembley – but it still means they will head into the play-offs.
Failure to win in the knock-out stage will deny spectators the chance to see their 74-goal all-time top scorer and Bayern Munich legend Lewandowski in Qatar.

    LUIS SUAREZ – Uruguay
Defeat to Argentina on Saturday left Uruguay outside the play-off positions in their qualifying group and in a battle with Chile and Colombia to progress.
Nobody will ever forget Atletico Madrid goal-machine Suarez’s infamous bite on Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup and he will be chomping at the bit to get to book his place at the tournament again.

Wenger, who managed Lauren for six years as Gunners boss, is Fifa’s current chief of global football development.
Invincibles star Lauren said: “I couldn’t be more excited to be taking up the role.
“I feel proud to be joining the Fifa family and there’s also a great sense of responsibility.”
If Lauren and Wenger can replicate their success together at Arsenal, their FIFA partnership should go well.

Wenger stayed on at the club for just over another decade, but reflecting on his time in North London, he reckons he should’ve quit sooner.
In an intimate self-titled documentary, coupled with the Invincible slogan, Wenger revealed that staying with Arsenal for so long was a mistake, and he now feels going on to manage one of the many big clubs who were chasing him at the time would’ve been the best option.
And as FIFA chief, Wenger’s also making waves in the football world with his plans for a World Cup every two years.
But the Frenchman’s idea hasn’t gone down too well with Premier League sides who unanimously voted against the project.
He’s also facing opposition from the other side of the continent as South American nations announced they won’t be taking part in a biennial World Cup.
However, Wenger has refused to let the idea die and called for a more ‘modern’ relationship between international and domestic football.

Ex-Man Utd boss Van Gaal, 70, rushed to hospital after falling off bike and has to take Holland training in golf buggy

The 70-year-old – who underwent a hip replacement in 2012 – is now using a wheelchair to get around following the latest prang.
The injury is not thought to be too serious though and Van Gaal was back at Netherlands training on Monday.
He was driven around in a golf buggy by coach Henk Fraser while his other assistant Danny Blind took the warm-up.
He has been advised to rest and let the injury clear up by itself without the need for further treatment.
A Netherlands spokesperson said: “Louis cannot walk and is in a wheelchair. He wants to do everything he can to make it to Tuesday’s game.”
Defender Virgil van Dijk appeared to see the lighter side at a press conference later in the day.

He was spotted giggling after the manager was unable to attend in person as his wheelchair wouldn’t fit through the door.
Van Gaal’s men take on Group G rivals Norway in Rotterdam on Tuesday night.
The Oranje sit top of the hotly-contested group, with Norway and Turkey both lurking two points behind them.
The veteran Van Gaal is expected to be on the touchline at De Kuip – home of Feyenoord.
He has previous when it comes to accidents forcing him to use a wheelchair while on the job.
In 2007 he relied on one to attend AZ Alkmaar matches after breaking his ankle while attempting to give a pole vault demonstration.

England icon Rio Ferdinand believed Three Lions team would be killed on World Cup flight as stars wept and prayed

FORMER England captain Rio Ferdinand has revealed he once feared the Three Lions team would be wiped out during a terrifying World Cup flight. The ex-Man U, 43, defender has told how players including Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard were crying and praying for their lives as their plane hit severe turbulence.

The drama followed our elimination from the 2006 World Cup in Germany and has never before been revealed.
Opening up for the first time, Rio said: “We’d just been knocked out of the competition by Portugal in the quarter finals and we had the worst flight back you can imagine. We got caught up in some terrible weather and everybody thought we were going to crash. We were all crying.
“I was sat near Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard and their wives and everyone was screaming. It was turbulence on another level. It was mental and people and luggage were all over the place and no one knew what was going on.
“I definitely thought, ‘This is it,’ especially when I looked at the air stewardesses. You can always gauge how serious things are by their expressions and I looked at them and they were all sat down in their seats stony faced and clearly thinking, ‘F***, we’re in trouble.’

“I’m usually quite calm but then I looked at them and I was properly scared.”
If the private jet had crashed it would have wiped out what has been branded a golden generation of footballers that included Rooney, Gerrard, Frank Lampard,  John Terry, and David Beckham.
Famous Wags including Coleen Rooney, and Liverpool star Gerrard’s then girlfriend Alex Curran that had set tongues wagging with their glamorous antics at the Baden-Baden base would also have met a shocking end.
English hopes were high ahead of the 2006 World Cup but the team was eliminated after losing the penalty shoot out with Portugal after the game was tied 0-0 at full time.

Rio, who won 81 caps for his country, believes former Chelsea midfielder Lampard’s toilet habits were another reason the Three Lions were not more successful – as they ruined his sleep.
The widower and father-of-three said: “When I got called up for England I used to share with Frank Lampard.
“He didn’t snore or anything and he was mostly good but the only thing that was a bit of a bummer was that at midnight he would go to the toilet and it was quite loud.
“In fact it was really loud. So loud that it used to wake me up. This long, loud p*ss.”

South America reluctant to back Arsene Wenger’s World Cup plans, with qualifiers offering fans a glimpse of their stars

WHEN the idea of a World Cup every two years was first floated, South America initially expressed a slight interest. But the continent had a quick rethink.
Arsene Wenger’s idea of a World Cup every two years hasn’t been welcomed in South AmericaCredit: PA
World Cup qualifiers give South American fans to see their European based stars, like Lional Messi, play in their countries they are fromCredit: AFP
Towards the end of last month, Conmebol, the South American Confederation, announced that its ten nations could see “no motive, benefits or justification” for the proposal, accused Fifa of “turning its back on a century of tradition” and affirmed that they would not take part in a World Cup every two years.
Even though the continent has just ten votes, this is a serious blow to the prestige of the proposal launched by Arsene Wenger.
South America started the World Cup back in 1930, and its traditional big three – Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay – have nine titles between them, as well as some of the biggest and most exciting names in the global game.
Brazil have played at every tournament. Could a World Cup without them really be a World Cup?
Why, then, has the continent turned against the biennial idea so quickly and radically?
It would seem to be because they have looked at the small print. Wenger’s proposal would seem to be a war on the qualification tournament, fearing that it has too many games and involves too much travelling. South America can hardly agree.

First, the qualifiers are the main moment when the continent gets to see the players it produces. Every weekend and often in midweek the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez are parading their talents for a European audience to enjoy.
The qualifiers are when they come home, a rare moment for their own public to enjoy them. And if the travelling is the price, then the players seem willing to pay it.
And then there is the question of too many games. World Cup qualification in South America is indeed a marathon, with 18 rounds of matches. But in normal circumstances – when not derailed by a pandemic – it uses the same Fifa dates as anywhere else.
The Copa America has no qualifiers, so when Europe is working out who will make it to the Euros, South America has already started on the next World Cup.
    BENEFITS FOR SMALLER NATIONS
And the marathon format, all ten nations playing each other home and away, has done wonders for the smaller and less traditional nations. It was introduced in 1996, and the consequences are clear.
Ecuador had never made it to a World Cup before 2002. Four years later they gave England a game in the second round. 2010 was the best World Cup in the history of Paraguay, 2014 was the same thing for Colombia.
2010 and 14 were the best ever for Chile, with the exception of 1962, which it hosted. Uruguay have returned to the top table, something which seemed unthinkable some twenty years ago.
All of this has been based on the World Cup qualifiers. They provide a regular calendar of competitive games, with guaranteed income, making it possible for the countries to hire better coaches and invest in youth development.
This week the thirteenth round of the current campaign is played. All five games are live affairs, with plenty at stake for one, or – in most cases – both sides.
The qualifiers work as they are in South America, both a source of income and as a stepping stone to improving the teams.
It is hardly a surprise that South America does not want to give them up and cut them back in exchange for a World Cup every two years.
