‘PREM COULD HAVE WORLD’S TOP 4 TEAMS’
Gary Neville claims the Premier League’s top four are stronger than ever and could be the “four best teams in the world”.
The Manchester United legend believes Liverpool’s first XI might be the finest – ahead of Manchester City, Chelsea and United.
Nev thinks big summer buys Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane have put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men into a new elite.
The ex-England right-back told Sky Sports: “I don’t think I’ve seen, in Premier League history, four teams as good as the top four we’ve got at the moment.
And I don’t think I’ve seen the Premier League this good in terms of quality.
“We could have the four best teams in the whole world at this moment in time.
“Liverpool’s first XI, if they can keep that fit, is possibly the best XI in the Premier league.
“City’s team is exceptional, Chelsea are strong like you wouldn’t believe, and Man Utd, with the addition of Ronaldo, Sancho and Varane, are going to be right in there amongst it.”
PREM SET FOR US TV CASH BONANZA
Premier League clubs are in line for a massive cash boost with predictions the US TV deal is set to DOUBLE in value.
NBC paid £640million for its current six-year contract, which runs out at the end of this season.

The major US broadcaster also put 130 games on its subscription Peacock service from last term.
But with ESPN – owned by the Disney corporation – Warner Media, ViacomCBS and potentially Amazon all expected to bid, it is set to drive up the winning auction price.
NBC have suggested to US media that they expect they will have to pay around £1.3billion to retain the rights for a further six years, offering a huge cash boost to the Prem clubs.
Overseas rights are split differently to domestic ones and a significant increase in the League’s largest market would see extra money to all 20 clubs.
Those at the top end would benefit more from the revised cash split introduced as Richard Scudamore’s parting shot as Prem chief executive in 2019.
ARTETA: NO PROMISES FOR LENO RECALL
Mikel Arteta insists he has NOT promised Bernd Leno a recall for the home clash with Spurs on September 26.
Leno was ousted by new keeper Aaron Ramsdale for last Saturday’s 1-0 win over Norwich – the Gunners first points of the season.
    Credit: Getty
Arteta said: “Obviously it wasn’t pleasant for Bernd to be told that he wasn’t playing but we needed to change something and Aaron has come here to try to make us better.
“We needed a result against Norwich, I decided to play Aaron and that’s it.
“It’s not true that Bernd reacted badly. He can be frustrated but he was a top professional with his team-mates and in training.
“What I have told the goalkeepers for the last two years is that we don’t want to give anyone assurances that they will play in certain games or competitions.
“In football you are judged on a daily basis. What you did three months ago doesn’t count. It’s what you’re going to do today and tomorrow.
“I am the one who picks the team and I haven’t even made a decision for Saturday’s game against Burnley, so you can imagine the team for the North London derby has not been chosen.”
    LUKAKU IS ‘WORLD’S BEST STRIKER’
Romelu Lukaku is the best striker in the world, according to Brazil legend Kaka.
And the former Real Madrid playmaker reckons the ex-Manchester United ace, who joined Chelsea from Inter Milan for £97.5illion over the summer, is similar to Brazil legend Adriano.
Kaka told Gazzetta dello Sport: “Romelu is number one, he reminds me of Adriano at his best – physical strength, intelligence, speed.”
And he believes Lukaku’s exit could help AC replace Inter as Serie A kings this season.
He added: “They have continuity, while the others have each lost something – Juventus no longer have Ronaldo, Inter will have to spread goals out in the team without Lukaku.
“Pioli gave up on Ibra [Ibrahimovic] for a long time [last season]. Conte always had Lukaku available to him.
“Today Ibra is still there and Giroud has joined, I think and I hope that we can go all the way.”
    JT EYES FOREST JOB
John Terry is keen on the Nottingham Forest job, writes ALAN NIXON.
Chelsea legend Terry wants to be a manager after working as Dean Smith’s assistant at Aston Villa.
Forest dismissed Chris Hughton as head coach and Steven Reid will take temporary charge on an interim basis.
Having left Villa, the former Blues captain recently expressed his desire to move into the top job.
Terry told Sky Sports: “Obviously [I’m] always waiting [for a management job].
“But the idea was to step away, spend a year with the family and then see what comes up.
“We’re a month into the season, I’m sure jobs will come up and I’m there and waiting and doing what I need to do in the background.
“But if not, I’m enjoying my time with my family”
    ARTETA ON POTENTIAL WILSHERE RETURN
Under-pressure Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has seemingly shut down the idea of signing free agent Jack Wilshere.
The Spaniard said of his old team-mate: “We are willing to help him as much as possibly can.
He knows that and that’s the situation.”
When asked if he could play for Arsenal again, Arteta added: “I wouldn’t take it that far.”

    NEW DEAL FOR DYCHE
Burnley boss Sean Dyche has inked a new four-year deal at Turf Moor.
The longest-serving manager in the Premier League, 50, said: “It is nice to be able to get this deal completed and now look towards the future of this football club, and its constant evolution.
“I have a strong affinity with the area and our supporters after so many years here and I look forward to putting in the hard work needed to keep the club moving in the right direction.
“It was an important summer for us to add talent and depth to the team, but the work doesn’t stop there. As a club we’re about developing and improving players and the environment we foster here is so important to that.
“I am looking forward to continuing to develop that environment, work with a great group of players and coaches and to build on the positive relationship with our new ownership headed up by Alan.”

    STOLEN MEDALS
Chelsea and England defender Reece James has revealed his Champions League winners and Euro 2020 runners up medals have been stolen from his house.
The right-back said: “On the evening of the 14th of September 2021 when I was playing for my club in the return of the Champions League, a group of cowardly robbers broke into my house.
“They managed to collectively lift a heavy safe containing some personal items of mine into their car. I never keep any jewellery of mine in my house so all that was contained in the safe were my Champions League winners medal and Super Cup winners medal and the runners up medal for the Euro 2020.
“These medals were won representing Chelsea and England – honours that can never be taken away from me whether or not I have the physical medals to prove it.”

    DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN UPDATE
Everton boss Rafael Benitez has revealed he won’t be able to call on the services of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the next three weeks.
He said: “It’s what I said after the game.
“Still we have to wait some weeks, we don’t know exactly how many but he will not be available for two or three weeks.”

    SOLSKJAER’S LINGARD HOPE
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager for England international Jesse Lingard to pen a new contract with Manchester United.
The Norwegian said of the midfielder, who will be a free agent at the end of the season: “He’s got this season left of his contract, and the club is talking to him and his dad.
“And we see him as a Man United player in the future as well. Jesse has come back to us after a great spell at West Ham.
“He showed his qualities, he’s got back into the England squad and he’s scoring goals for England.
“We really want to see the best of Jesse this season and we hope to see him, we support him, and we hope to keep him here with us. He’s a Red through and through.”

    MESSI ADMISSION
Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo admits Lionel Messi had no intention of ever joining the club prior to La Liga’s ruling Barcelona couldn’t re-acquire his services.
The Brazilian told Marca: “I can’t hide that we had contact before, but after January, when he had six months left on his contract. We never spoke to him before January 2021.
“I think his idea was to stay at Barca. Honestly, he was sure he didn’t want to go and he wanted to finish his career there.
“But there ended the Messi story at Barcelona and ours began.
“Imagining a player like Messi with the PSG shirt is something enormous and very nice.”

    RED ALERT
Ex-Premier League player Nigel Jemson believes that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could be plotting a move for Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland.
Haaland has attracted immense interest following a string of stunning poerformances for Dortmund and Red Bull Salzburg beforehand.
The star striker has been targeted by the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Jemson told Football FanCast: “I’ve just got a sneaky feeling that Haaland could be the one that Klopp really wants”
    RUD AWAKENING
Chelsea are refusing to meet Antonio Rudiger’s salary demands amid contract talks.
That is according to ESPN, who report that Rudiger wants his wages to double to £200,000 per week.
The centre-back’s contract runs out next year in June and negotiations appear to be moving much slower than expected.
If the Blues fail to reach an agreement with the Germany international then the player will be free to find a new club come January
    NOT WIL-ING
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta suggested free agent and ex-Gunners player Jack Wilshere won’t be be offered a pay-to-play contract.
Arteta offered former team-mate Wilshere the chance to train at London Colney.
This comes after the midfielder was let go by Bournemouth and left without a club.
Arteta said: “I wouldn’t take it that far”
    GETTY IMAGES
    ORIGI PRAISE
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted he thought Divock Origi would leave in the summer but claims “people forgot how good he is”.
Klopp said: “He’s done nothing really special [in training to get back in the side], but Divock is a great guy.
“In 10 years time, when people look back, he will be a Liverpool legend. He is too young to be seen as a legend already so he has to play football.
“To be 100 per cent honest, I thought he would leave in the summer, but the football world is a crazy place and obviously people forgot how good he is”
    NOB-ILE GESTURE
The steward, who was on the receiving end of a Cristiano Ronaldo shot during Manchester United’s pre-game warm-up against Young Boys, said she thought she was dead.
Ronaldo hit the ball wide during training in Berne before United’s first Champions League game of the season.
The ball crashed on the head of steward Marisa Nobile, who was knocked to the ground.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner jumped over the barrier to apologise and ensure she was safe.
Nobile told Blick TV: “When the ball hit me on my head it was a full strike!
“I was gone in my head and went to the ground. Afterwards I saw Ronaldo above me! Me: ‘Oh my god no, did I die?’
“Ronaldo said: ‘No, no. Excuse me! What’s happening? Are you all right?’
“I was in great pain. My God. I was more or less ballaballa! But then I saw Ronaldo and the headache was gone”
    CONT-ING ON IT
Antonio Conte is keen on coaching Manchester United one day, if the opportunity arises.
That is according to Sky Italia reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, who claims that Conte would love to join United because he knows he would win honours quickly.
That may be the reason why the Italian manager didn’t take over at Tottenham in the summer as he saw it more of a long-term project.
In fact, the ex-Chelsea boss wanted to replace Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford back in 2018
    ZAK ATTACK
Chelsea are facing a potential bidding war with Barcelona over Dynamo Moscow wonderkid Arsen Zakharyan.
That is according to reports in Russia, which claim that the midfielder has indeed been linked with the Blues.
But Barca are also admirers of the 18-year-old Russia international ahead of the January transfer window.
The youngster, though, is believed to have a release clause of €12million (£10.2m)
    GETTY IMAGES
    SLOT-TED IN
Feyenoord boss Arne Slot argues that Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson didn’t have a significant future at the Emirates before joining the Eredivisie giants.
Slot said: “I’m not saying anything about how Arsenal train.
“I’m saying something about how substitute player Reiss Nelson, who didn’t have much of a future there, trained.
“He was very often in the team that had to imitate the opponent. He didn’t actually play any matches.
“Now he is with a team that is busy and where he is seen as a player who has to play a lot. So that combination has caused him to have some overload problems”
    NEW TARGET
Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Red Bull Salzburg ace Karim Adeyemi.
That is according to journalist Ekrem Konur, who reports that the Reds will hold talks with Salzburg during the January transfer window.
The striker, though, has attracted interest from Bayern Munich as well.
Therefore, a bidding war shouldn’t be ruled out for the Germany international
    MORE FROM TIELEMANS
Leicester star Youri Tielemans has remained coy about his future at King Power Stadium.
Tielemans’ contract with the Foxes runs out in 2023 and the midfielder has been linked with Manchester United, Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The midfielder told Sky Sports: “As long as I’m here I will give everything for the club.
“I’ve already done so, but I will do so even more. The contract situation is just something that is going on in football, it’s a normal situation.
“There are talks going on – I’m not saying I’m going to sign, I’m not saying I’m not going to sign. We will see”
    CHELSEA CONTRACTS
Chelsea have yet to hold talks with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante over new contracts.
That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Kante and Jorginho remain a priority for the Blues nevertheless.
Romano added that the west Londoners have also started negotiations with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
A deal with Christensen is almost complete but Rudiger is asking for a higher salary

    FER REAL
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes is closing in on a new five-year deal worth more than £250,000-a-week, reports SunSport’s Daniel Cutts.
Fernandes has been in talks with United’s hierarchy for months over the new terms, and is close to putting pen to paper.
The playmaker, who was targeted by Real Madrid and Barcelona, will increase his salary by nearly £100,000-a-week with the new contract.
SunSport understands the new terms will last until 2026 and a deal could be confirmed within the next few weeks
    OL IN
Manchester United are keeping tabs on RB Leipzig ace Dani Olmo.
That is according to Marca, who report that United are still on the lookout for a midfielder ahead of the January transfer window.
The Red Devils are facing the prospect of losing Paul Pogba at the end of the season as his contract runs out in June.
However, Olmo plays as an attack-minded midfielder for Leipzig and Spain’s national team
    LUIZ CREDIT
Former Chelsea and Arsenal star David Luiz has credited former Gunners team-mate Pablo Mari for his decision to sign for Flamengo.
Luiz told Fla TV: “Ever since he arrived at Arsenal, I’ve tried to build a friendship with him.
“He was delighted with Flamengo, with Rio de Janeiro, with Brazil.
“He lived his best career moments here at Flamengo”

    AU REVOIR
It’s goodbye from us in Belgium as PSG’s latest quest for the Champions League crown begins in a less than impressive fashion.

    FT: BRUGES 1-1 PSG
A huge roar greets the referee’s full time whistle, and it’s a fitting response to the efforts of these Club Bruges players. The hosts gave everything they had as they held the stellar names of Paris Saint-Germain, even if they were unable to keep up their incredible intensity in the final half hour. Nevertheless, every player is blue and black stripes excelled as Neymar and Messi failed to shine.
    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!THE FINAL WHISTLE IS BLOWN!
    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
90+2. A final chance for the hosts to grab a dramatic win!
Lang charges forward, and has De Ketelaere arriving in support. The striker opts to use his strike partner by not using him, and comes back on to his right foot to shoot…
…and it swerves towards the corner flag.
    BRUGES 1-1 PSG

PSG are camped in the home side’s half.
    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    87. This will help the hosts out, however, as they win a corner.

    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    81. Some typical Neymar petulance.
The Brazilian trips Nsoki needlessly after being outmuscled by the French defender once again.
The Bruges centre-back isn’t happy and makes his points of view clear to Neymar, who responds with a verbal volley of his own. Both escape a booking.
    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    81. Inside the final ten minutes, and it’s so finely poised.
A winner at either end would not be a surprise.
    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    79. Nuno Mendes shows what he has to offer by darting away from Sobol and down the left flank.
He looks up and, seeing Messi on the prowl, sends a cross fizzing into the feet of the forward. It’s a touch behind him, but you’d still expect better from Messi, who smashes an effort over the bar.

    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    76. Balanta, a tireless performer in midfield, is booked for a foul on Neymar.
Meanwhile, PSG have thrown on teenager Nuno Mendes at left-back for Abdou Diallo.

The 20-year-old De Ketelaere startles the PSG defence when he wins back possession in the box, and hangs a cross up above Hakimi to the far post.
Waiting there is the 22-year-old Lang, who unleashes a spectacular bicycle kick that flies wide.

    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    72. Messi’s name goes into the referee’s notebook, but it’s not as a goalscorer.
The Argentine is shown a yellow card after catching Rits as the midfielder darted in to nick possession away.

    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    70. At the other end, Messi does similar and his shot has plenty of power!
In the Bruges goal, Mignolet stands up to the task and pushes the shot back to the forward, who is only able to knock it behind.
    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    69. Lang works half a yard of space for himself in the box to swivel and shoot, but his shot lacks the power to trouble Navas.
    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    68. Much to the home fans’ frustration, PSG are awarded a controversial corner.
Messi and Neymar work it short which, if nothing else, serves to remind us that the pair are playing. If Messi’s been quiet, Neymar has been absolutely anonymous.

    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    66. Bruges are finding their groove again.
The impressive De Ketelaere acrobatically controls a high bouncing ball, and swivels a volleyed pass out wide to Lang.
Lang then shows off pace and trickery to escape Hakimi before sending over a cross that PSG do well to survive.
    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    65. Kimpembe does well to control a long ball over the top with his backside while under pressure from Lang.
    John McGinn would be proud.
    BRUGES 1-1 PSG
    62. Herrera gives some back, fouling the lively Lang in the middle of the pitch.
This could be an individual battle to watch.

    GOODBYE FROM THE BRIDGE
One-nil to the Chelsea! This season’s Champions League campaign has begun in the same manner as the last ended.
While tonight’s narrow victory won’t be celebrated as wildly as May’s final triumph, the manner in which the holders dug out an opening day win will please Thomas Tuchel and his acolytes.
Romelu Lukaku once again did the job he was brought back for, scoring the decisive goal when all other routes looked futile.
So the Champions League holders are up and running for 2021-22, tomorrow it will be the turn of the beaten finalists. Manchester City’s home fixture with RB Leipzig is one of eight group games on the agenda, and you can follow all the action with us here.
    KEEPING IT CLEAN
Thirteen? Unlucky for some, perhaps, but not Edouard Mendy.
The Chelsea goalkeeper survived an injury scare in the warm-up this evening to keep his tenth Champions League clean sheet. The impressive milestone has been brought up in just 13 appearances since he joined the club.

    THOMAS NEVER DOUBTED
Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has expressed his delight at the determination shown by his players to break down a resilient Zenit Saint Petersburg side.
“It was not frustrating, it was tough against a very strong opponent.
“We had to work really hard to have high ball recoveries which we did. We brought a huge intensity to the game, and we tried to keep the intensity high, on and off the ball, but it took time.
“We struggled to create chances and shots in the first half. The second half was a bit easier for us to find little space, and find those moments to shoot and create chances.
“It was a deserved win, but it was hard work.”

    H-ERE WE GO
Favourites to quality before a ball was kicked, Juventus and Chelsea already find themselves at the top of Group H after matchday one. However, while the Blues laboured to their home success, Juve cruised to victory in Sweden with their final goal coming courtesy of former Chelsea forward, Alvaro Morata.

    FULL TIME STATS
Chelsea created little at Stamford Bridge, but when you have a finisher of Romelu Lukaku’s calibre, there’s always a chance. The striker scored the game’s only goal from his only attempt on target this evening.

    FT: CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
The Champions League holders begin their defence with a win in Group H, but they had to work hard for it. Against a disciplined Zenit side, the Blues huffed and puffed without joy until Romelu Lukaku continued his bright start to life back at the Bridge by rising highest to head home Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross.
    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!THE FINAL WHISTLE IS BLOWN!
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
90+4. A brilliant tackle from Douglas Santos denies Romelu Lukaku a second goal that would have sealed the points in style.
The striker looked in goal following a quick Chelsea counter, only for the Zenit captain to execute arguably the challenge of the night with the game’s last act.
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
90+3. Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s reward for his slapdash performances on loan at Fulham last season is a Champions League cameo.
The midfielder comes on for Mason Mount.
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    90. Four minutes of additional time are signalled by the fourth official.
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    89. On commentary, Ian Darke points out that Zenit’s only previous win in England was against Bradford at Valley Parade in the Intertoto Cup.
*Insert whatever happened to Bradford/the Intertoto Cup comment here*
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    88. The last rolls of Sergei Semak’s dice. Andrei Mostovoy and Danil Krugovoi are on, Claudinho and Yaroslav Rakits’kyy go off.
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    87. Just a few minutes remain, and Chelsea still lead but only by one goal.
And as we know, when it’s only one goal, anything can happen.
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    85. Rudiger continues to reinvent himself as a marauding winger as he goes on another surging run down the left.
This time, he slips in Chilwell on the overlap, but the substitute’s cross is cut out by a panicked Zenit defence.
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    83. The lesser-seen Ben Chilwell. The defender is on for Marcos Alonso as Thiago Silva replaces Cesar Azplicueta.
Zenit have also made a change, Kirill Kravtsov has come on for Daler Kuzyaev.

    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    80. Dzyuba! Must be! Wide!
Three quick passes and Azmoun finds himself in on the right, and his first time delivery looks perfect for his strike partner sliding in.
Dzyuba gets his foot to the low cross, but without the power necessary to take it beyond Mendy. Instead the attempt trickles wide, and the striker crashes into the home goalkeeper.
A big chance for the big man to equalise, but Chelsea survive.

    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    79. Ben Chilwell warms up and looks set to play his first minutes of football since last season.
So obviously that’s the cue for Alonso to show off his skills by twisting past two defenders and firing a shot just wide.
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    77. It appears the visitors are going to take a more direct route now following the introduction of Dzyuba.
The 33-year-old is an absolute unit up front.
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    75. A double substitution from Zenit, and Sergei Semak is clearly chasing the equaliser.
The big man, Artem Dzyuba, is on to partner Azmoun, and also on is the Russian international, Aleksandr Erokhin. Off go Wendel and Malcom.
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    72. Mount almost adds a quickfire second, but attempts one turn too many in his desire to find space to shoot in the box.
    CHELSEA 1-0 ZENIT
    69. Romelu Lukaku has his first Champions League goal for Chelsea!
The striker once again shows his worth just when it looked as though his side had run out of ideas to break down a stubborn Zenit outfit.
Cesar Azplicueta played his part, delivering a delicious deep cross from the right, and there was Lukaku, peeling off his marker at the back post, to head delicately down and past Stanislav Kritsyuk.
The Champions League holders are off and running!

    GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!ROMELU LUKAKU BREAKS THE DEADLOCK!!
    CHELSEA 0-0 ZENIT
    68. Another glimpse of the Zenit threat on the counter.
Azmoun fails to control a quick pass forward, but Wendel follows up and takes sight. He unleashes a long range curler that’s plucked out of the air by Mendy,
    CHELSEA 0-0 ZENIT
    66. More pressure. More corners. Again, Alonso fails to get his deliveries away from the Zenit goalkeeper.
    CHELSEA 0-0 ZENIT
    64. Chelsea keep pushing and probing. The game is being played almost entirely in the Zenit half.
The home side even force a couple of corners that have Kritsyuk flapping the ball away from the danger.

Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen, Araujo, Garcia, Pique, Roberto, de Jong, Busquets, Pedri, Alba, de Jong, Depay
Bayern Munich XI: Neuer, Pavard, Upamecano, Sule, Davies, Kimmich, Sane, Muller, Goretzka, Musiala, Lewandowski.

    THAT’S ALL FOR NOW!
For the 18th year in a row Bayern have won their opening Champions League match.
It’s now 19 games in a row without defeat on the road in Europe for Julian Nagelsmann’s men.
Robert Lewandowski has also now scored in each of his last 18 Bayern appearances (28 goals).
The last time he played for Bayern without finding the net was the FIFA Club World Cup final against Tigres on 11th February. Not bad going.
As for Barca, they looked a shadow of the famous sides of old. It might be some time before they’re a footballing powerhouse once again.

    PIQUE REACTION
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique refused to be downcast despite seeing Bayern Munich secure a comfortable win.
He said: “It’s a bad result, obviously. But in the first half we competed. The second goal really hurt us, but I’m positive because the teenagers came on and we were competitive again.
“Little by little we will get better, and we have the basis to do that.
“There is a difference at the moment, obviously, but we have players injured who can bring a lot, especially up front.”

    FT: BARCELONA 0-3 BAYERN
A Thomas Muller strike and a brilliant brace from Robert Lewandowski earn Bayern a comprehensive win.
It’s the first time in 22 years that Barca have lost their opening Champions League game.
Bayern didn’t really need to get out of second gear.
On this evidence, Barca might struggle to get out of the group.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!THE FINAL WHISTLE GOES!
    BARCELONA 0-3 BAYERN
    90. There will be two minutes of added time. Coman flashes a delivery across the face of goal. Bayern aren’t sitting back.
    BARCELONA 0-3 BAYERN
    85. It’s that man Lewandowski again. Coman picks out Gnabry whose shot hits the post. Lewandowski is first to the rebound and feints to shoot before blasting home. Ruthless.
    GGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOALAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLL BAYERN!!!
    BARCELONA 0-2 BAYERN
    83. More subs. Yay. Muller is replaced by Sabitzer, while Sane makes way for Coman and Sule is withdrawn for Stanislic.
    BARCELONA 0-2 BAYERN
    82. Gavi goes into the book for catching Muller. The youngsters have made a difference to Barca.
    BARCELONA 0-2 BAYERN
    77. Better from Barca as they break in numbers. Coutinho goes for goal and sees his effort blocked. Perhaps the pass to Depay would have been the better option. Upamecano is booked for chopping down Depay. Bit needless, that.
    BARCELONA 0-2 BAYERN
    75. Depay loses possession again. It’s been a frustrating night for the Dutchman but the service to him has been non-existent.
    BARCELONA 0-2 BAYERN
    73. Alba’s race is run. He injured himself stretching for a cross. He trots off for Balde as the 17-year-old makes his first-team debut.
    BARCELONA 0-2 BAYERN
    69. Another change by Bayern. Musiala makes way for Gnabry. Not a bad sub to be able to bring on.
    BARCELONA 0-2 BAYERN
    68. We’ve seen this before. Coutinho cuts in from the left and goes for goal. However, his effort flies well wide of the far stick.
    BARCELONA 0-2 BAYERN
    66. It’s been a bit of a stroll for Bayern so far. More changes for Barca as former Bayern man Coutinho and Mingueza come on for Garcia and Luuk de Jong. For Bayern, Hernandez replaces Pavard.
18 – At the age of 18 years and 104 days, Yusuf Demir becomes the second-youngest non-Spanish player to appear in a #UCL match for Barcelona. Only Lionel Messi was younger when he debuted in 2004 (17y 166d). Change. #FCBFCB pic.twitter.com/aqyckIpxMX— OptaFranz (@OptaFranz) September 14, 2021

    BARCELONA 0-2 BAYERN
    59. Barca respond by making a double change. Busquets and Roberto make way for youngsters Gavira and Demir.
    BARCELONA 0-2 BAYERN
    56. The pressure pays off as Bayern double their lead. Musiala’s strike crashes back off a post but that man Lewandowski pokes home the rebound for his 74th Champions League goal.
    .Credit: Reuters
    GGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLL BAYERN!!!

    BARCELONA 0-1 BAYERN
    52. Big save from Ter Stegen to keep out Sane after he plays a neat one-two with Lewandowski. Sane opens his body up and looks to curl it to the far post but Ter Stegen’s right boot denies the German.
    BARCELONA 0-1 BAYERN
    49. Alba’s cross is only cleared as far as Busquets. He wallops it towards goal but Muller sticks out a leg to turn it behind.
    BARCELONA 0-1 BAYERN
    46. Barca didn’t have a shot on target in the first half. Improvement is clearly needed. No changes by either side at the break.
0 – Barcelona have failed to register a shot on target in a first half of a Champions League group stage home game for the first time since at least 2003/04. Difficult. pic.twitter.com/g2tnSgNOhe— OptaJose (@OptaJose) September 14, 2021

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!OFF WE GO AGAIN!
    PEEEEEEEEP!!!!!!!
    HT: BARCELONA 0-1 BAYERN
The German giants deservedly lead at the break thanks to Thomas Muller’s deflected effort the day after his 32nd birthday.
Leroy Sane had gone close before then, forcing Marc-Andre ter Stegen into a good stop.
Barca have huffed and puffed but created very little. They’ll need to find something extra to get back into this. I can’t see it being 8-2, mind.

    BARCELONA 0-1 BAYERN
    40. Depay skips past a couple of Bayern players but his run is halted by a firm challenge from Davies.
    BARCELONA 0-1 BAYERN
    35. Bayern drive forward again. Sane goes down in the box but play is waved on.

Young Boys 2-1 Man Utd LIVE RESULT: Cristiano Ronaldo goal in vain as Lingard gifts Swiss side 94th minute win

CRISTIANO RONALDO has netted again for Man Utd, but the Red Devils will still be leaving Switzerland without any points. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner gave the Red Devils the lead after latching onto a brilliant Bruno Fernandes cross.
But the match turned when Aaron Wan-Bissaka was given a red card for a dangerous first half challenge.
Moumi Ngamaleu then equalised from close range before a misplaced Jesse Lingard backpass gifted Jordan Siebatcheu a 94th minute winner.

    THAT’S ALL
SunSport will have further reaction to tonight’s defeat plus reaction from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
It wasn’t a great night for United who played Ronaldo for 70 minutes and had to bring on Varane who was being rested.
That’s on top of the matchday one defeat.
A mountain to climb in Europe already? Probably not as there’s plenty of time to go!

    NOT GREAT READING
Tonight’s defeat means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now lost seven Champions League games from his last 11.
Mourinho and van Gaal before him lost six from 20 between them.

    MAN-BYS
Our man Jordan Davies runs the rule over tonight’s United players.
    See Jordan’s thoughts below.
    DAVID DE GEA – 6/10
Made a few decent saves at the end of the first-half as United appeared flustered following the red card.
Perhaps should have done better for the equaliser at his near post but was not helped by the shocking defending in front of him.
    AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 3
Ultimately cost his side with a stupid and unnecessary challenge that rightly saw him receive a straight red.
Did very little in attack when he was on the pitch, and will now be missing for some crucial games for his club in this competition.
    VICTOR LINDELOF – 5
Started in a calm manner and was barely troubled by the Young Boys attack.
But was caught out on a few occasions after the break and gave away some silly fouls that put his team under pressure late on.
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 6
Led well when his side were under the cosh as Young Boys looked for their winner.
It could have been a lot worse had it not been for his calmness in tight situations.
    LUKE SHAW – 6
Was arguably United’s most creative player at times, constantly getting up the pitch to provide support out wide.
Was hemmed back after the red card and put in a solid display as the pressure mounted – but the cross for the equaliser did come from his flank.
    FRED – 6
Did very little wrong, but did very little to impact the game either.
Was fortunate not to be subbed off for another defender after the red. Is surprisingly becoming quite the dependable figure for Solskjaer.
DONNY VAN DE BEEK – 4
Really cannot catch a break after being subbed off at the break despite making his first long-awaited start of the season.
But when he was on the pitch, he was barely noticeable, and was lucky not to be booked for a rash tackle early on.

    JADON SANCHO – 6
Showed glimpses of what he could do, but it wasn’t enough in a game where he should be taking it by the scruff of the neck.
Was subbed off after 37 minutes following the red for Diogo Dalot to end what could have been a defining moment of his United career so far.
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 7
The assist for his compatriot’s opener was simply outstanding – one that deserved to be a winning assist too.
But as United dropped deeper and deeper, his influence faded – unsurprisingly.
    PAUL POGBA – 7
A different kind of performance from the Frenchman – he showed a real strength on the ball when his side needed it.
And we finally saw the sort of leadership he provides for his country. Long may it continue if United are to progress in this competition.
    CRISTIANO RONALDO – 8
Barely touched the ball before his goal, but he comes alive when he is given a chance in the box.
After 72 minutes his night was over, yet he made sure his impact was felt in a tournament he so desperately wants to win again with United.
    EARLIER CHANGE NEEDED
Paul Scholes wanted Ole to make a change earlier to have pace up the top end of the park.
And he points to the sending off for the reason for the defeat.
It all stems from the sending off. United were quite comfortable up to that point. They really couldn’t get out of their half in the second half. I think they needed to bring a bit of pace on earlier, with Martial or Greenwood.Paul ScholesBT Sport

    THE WINNER
Can’t believe I’m watching this again.
    Really poor at this level.
It’s disappointment for Man Utd, as Young Boys snatch it late in Switzerland!Jesse Lingard makes a costly error and Jordan Siebatcheu nips in to apply the finish and send the home crowd wild! ⚽#UCL pic.twitter.com/vZimQoMaIz— Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) September 14, 2021

    REPORT
Read through our match report from tonight’s game.
It’s over on the Sun Football page.
    And HERE

    RIO RUE
Rio Ferdinand – confident as you’d like before the game – says tough games across Europe are to be expected as he sees similarities to last season.
This is last year all over again. We rued mistakes then and that is a big mistake at the end from Jessie. He done really well at the weekend. But it goes to show, no matter where you go in Europe it’s tough. You have to be on your game and tuned in.Rio FerdinandBT Sport
    THE GROUP
How Group F shapes up after tonight’s defeat.
Really, it should have been an easy three points.
Then at 1-1, it was a decent point on the road given the red card.
Now United are bottom after the first game.

FT: YOUNG BOYS 2-1 MAN UTD
Watching the replay back, it’s even worse than you could imagine.
He’s had a lot of praise Lingard for the last couple of weeks.
    But this is horrendous.
United in front through Ronaldo before Wan-Bissaka’s red card on 35 minutes.
Young Boys level in the second-half before the mistake that led to the winning goal with seconds remaining.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!
The last kick of the game
    YOUNG BOYS 2-1 MAN UTD
    YOUNG BOYS 2-1 MAN UTD
Every player of the Young Boys squad is down the touchline.
Wagner in dreamland, the fans going absolutely crazy.
What a huge goal for them.
    YOUNG BOYS 2-1 MAN UTD
The United defence were set for a huge amount of credit for defending with 10 men for 55 minutes.
Then Lingard got involved and has cost them HUGELY.
He picks the pass up 25 yards from his own goal and tries a backpass to De Gea.
That is a shocker as it’s short, Siebatcheu pounces and lifts it over De Gea and in.
    GOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLL!!!!
WOW WOW, LINGARD WITH AN ABSOLUTE HOWLER!!!
YOUNG BOYS WIN IT AT THE DEATH!!!
    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
90+3′ Long ball down the channel and Varane and Maguire play offside but no flag comes.
Kanga – just on for Young Boys – flashes one across the box and through and away.
    That could be that.

    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
    FIVE MINUTES ADDED
    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
90′ Pogba and Lingard get themselves in a twist on the edge of their box and Young Boys create an opportunity.
Elia crosses one into the box which Lindelof flicks away and Dalot completes the clearance.
    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
88′ Lindelof heads the latest corner away.
United make their final change of the night.

    OFF – Fred
    ON – Anthony Martial

    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
    CLOSE!!
87′ Lauper steps forward from the back to pick up a loose ball.
He strikes from 25 yards and it’s flying at de Gea’s goal.
The United keeper doing well to tip it over the bar.

    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
85′ You won’t be surprised to hear Maguire headed the ball away.
Young Boys pick up the ball again and it’s knocked long into the box.
Nodded down for Ngamaleu  who swipes an effort from the edge which is curling away from goal and wide.
    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
85′ The goalscorer Ngamaleu receives the ball wide on the right and Shaw is quick out to stop him crossing.
But it’s at the expense of a Young Boys corner.
    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
83′ A minute of treatment on the park, a minute on the side and Lindelof is back on.
Just over five minutes to go.

    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
81′ Nasty-looking head knock for Lindelof who is down for treatment.
The physios rush across but he does look OK.
    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
79′ Maguire reaches the ball in which lands at Lindelof’s feet.
He can’t sort his feet out in time to get a shot away and it’s snuffed out.

    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
78′ And a pitch invader runs onto the park to delay the restart.
A decent forward-roll that wipes out the steward.
    Idiot.
    YOUNG BOYS 1-1 MAN UTD
77′ Free kick to United in a promising position.
35 yards from goal, wide on the right and a chance for the visitors to flood the box as the three centre backs head forward.

    ASTRO AHEAD
An artificial pitch awaits United tonight.

“Being from Norway, I’m used to Astroturf pitches.

“I’ve not tested it yet but it should be good.”

    MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM NEWS
Someone else perhaps not anticipated to start but Donny van de Beek gets his opportunity in the United midfield.
Fred, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba all start too in what looks like possibly being a diamond in the middle of the park.
Raphael Varane starts on the bench as Victor Lindelof comes in.
MAN UTD XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Fred, Pogba. Bruno Fernandes, van de Beek, Sancho, Ronaldo

    AND THE ANSWER…..
    RONALDO STARTS!
    TEAM NEWS IS IN!!
    OR THIS?
It’s not just Ronaldo that Solskjaer would want to rest.
Can he take a risk on matchday one away from home though?
If he’s up for it, could it be this line-up?

    POSSIBLE LINE-UP
If he does play Ronaldo, will this be tonight’s XI?

WILL HE PLAY OR WILL HE NOT?
Will Solskjaer look to hand Ronaldo a rest tonight?
The coach suggested he may leave Ronaldo out of his starting XI for Tuesday’s game after the team’s 4-1 win against Newcastle on Saturday.
When asked by the press about the player, Solskjaer said: “I have to manage a 36-year-old’s minutes.
“Of course there is a game on Tuesday. We will see what we do.”

    CHAMPIONS LEAGUE NIGHTS
European football’s premier competition is BACK.
The Champions League group stages get back under way tonight as 32 teams embark on a continental journey looking for glory.
Among them is Manchester United and we are with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men for their matchday one clash in Switzerland.
The Swiss side won the Super League for the fourth successive campaign last year to qualify for this year’s competition.
And they have been rewarded with a tough draw with United, Villarreal and Atalanta – though it’s one they might just fancy their chances.
For the Reds, it’s very much a group they will be confident of navigating, despite coming up against last season’s European nemesis Villarreal.
Saturday’s 4-1 home win over Newcastle made it three wins from their four games this season as they sit at the top of the Premier League.
Apart from that, not much else happened at Old Trafford….
The return of Ronaldo was always going to give the United squad and players a huge lift and it was some lift after bagging twice.
How long can they hold onto that bounce though?
One thing is for sure, this is a competition where CR7 has done not too badly in.
We’ll see how he and his United teammates get on as they get underway in just under 90 minutes.
    Team news to come.

Leeds United and England star Kalvin Phillips is the latest to take to social media to send the young Liverpool man a message.

Klopp was visibly distressed in the aftermath of the incident, but has now said: “One of the Instagram posts I liked, if he did that already it is a sign he is not in much pain, so that is great.
“We all saw the ankle was not in the right place and the medical team put it in the right place.

    ELLAND ROAD WELL WISHES
Leeds United’s chairman Andrea Radrizzani has also wished Harvey Elliott a speedy recovery.
And like Marcelo Bielsa he defended Pascal Struijk, insisting the injury was accidental.
He told Sky Sports: “The accident, it was hard for him and I wish the boy a full recovery and hope he can recover soon, but this is part of football.
“To be honest, if you watch the video, you see Struijk slide with his left foot on him, and it’s accidental. It was not a premeditated tackle.”
    MARCELO’S MESSAGE
Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has sent Harvey Elliott a message of support, while also defending Pascal Struijk.
He said: “I regret dearly the opponent was injured and I’m 100 per cent certain our player did not have a bad intention. I wish it had not happened.
“Pascal [Struijk] recovered the ball. The action to get the ball did not have an infraction, but had the feeling the movement of the rest of his body after recovering the ball, made him hit Elliott.
“I am totally sure there was no bad intention. I don’t know how to qualify], but obviously some excess of power or imprudence. These recoveries are totally frequent.
“The difference here was the follow-through of the power caused the injury. I regret so dearly a young player has been interrupted through this. I hope he is able to get back.”
    MORE FROM KLOPP

He was applauded off the pitch by both Liverpool and Leeds fans, with the youngster gratefully returning the applause.

    BOSS TALK
Speaking after the game, Jurgen Klopp said: “It’s a bad injury; his ankle.
“It was dislocated and we put it back. We have to wait and see.
“He had an incredible game, he’s an incredible player, but now he’s out.
“We have to be there for him, and we will be there.
“We have to play football without him, but we will wait for him as he’s a top, top player.
“I could see his foot not in the right place, that’s why we were so shocked.”
Klopp refused to draw upon what he said to the referee after Elliot’s injury, he took a moment to compose himself before adding: “I’m not sure it’s the right moment to speak about these kind of things.”
Reflecting on his team’s performance, Klopp said: “We had a great game, I don’t want to be greedy and say we should have had more goals – but we had plenty of shots and some of it wasn’t good enough – but some of the football we played was exceptional.”

    VIRGIL SPEAKS
Virgil van Dijk spoke to Sky Sports, he said: “First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with Harvey.
“Hopefully he recovers quickly and as good as possible from it – obviously we have no idea of the diagnosis at the moment.

“The whole treatment period will be difficult and then you have to refocus, but we had to deal with it and deal with it in the best possible way.
“Apart from that it was a fantastic win here, it was an intense game, I enjoyed the atmosphere here as we haven’t had it for a while.
“It’s a very satisfying win, we knew it would be an intense and hard game with their fans behind them.
“We had to be ready for the battle and embrace the atmosphere.”

    THIAGO’S INPUT
With stats like this, it’s little wonder that Thiago won man-of-the-match today.
