Howard Webb ‘claims VAR was RIGHT not to overturn Ivan Toney’s goal’ in unseen letter to Nottingham Forest

PGMOL boss Howard Webb has insisted VAR were correct not to intervene and disallow Ivan Toney’s free-kick in a letter to Nottingham Forest.Toney, 27, marked his return after an eight-month betting ban by scoring the opener in Brentford’s 3-2 win over Forest on Saturday evening.

Referee chief Howard Webb insists the VAR followed the protocols correctlyCredit: Rex
But the goal caused much uproar as the England striker was spotted moving the ball and the vanishing spray before the set-piece was taken.
Forest wrote to the referees’ body, the PGMOL, insisting Toney’s conduct was a “serious missed incident”.
The Tricky Trees also questioned why VAR Michael Salisbury did not intervene in the matter.
But, according to The Mail, Webb responded to Forest on Monday confirming that the appropriate protocols were followed.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Rules agreed by the International Football Association Board [IFAB] dictate that the VAR can only get involved in matters relating to “goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity”.
Toney’s re-placing of the ball did not fall within this remit, so VAR Salisbury was unable to intervene.
Forest are now internally discussing Webb’s response before they issue a comment publicly.
However, they are “unlikely” to pursue the matter any further.

Toney could have been booked for moving the ball had it been spotted by referee Darren England.
It is the second time in less than a month that Forest have been left furious with the implementation of VAR.
In December, Forest defender Willy Boly was controversially dismissed for a second yellow card despite cleanly winning the ball in a challenge with Bournemouth’s Adam Smith.
VAR was unable to intervene as it was a yellow card offence rather than a straight red.
    Neville won’t approve
Manchester United legend Gary Neville will be unimpressed by Forest’s decision to write to the PGMOL.
That is because he criticised both Liverpool and Arsenal for doing the same thing earlier this season.
He tweeted: “Clubs writing to the PGMOL is embarrassing!
“Liverpool and Arsenal started it and set the precedent of this nonsense.”
    Fuming fans
Football fans were fuming after Toney moved his free-kick at the weekend.
And they took to social media to vent their frustrations.
One said: “Toney moving the ball to a more favourable position. Ban him again.”
A second fan added: “Ivan Toney caught red-handed moving the vanishing foam (and the ball) while the referee’s back is turned.”
A third replied: “Ivan Toney does not score that goal if he didn’t move the ball and the white foam. How did VAR not check that?!”

Another responded: “Toney not only moved the ball after the wall was set, he moved it a second time and even moved the foam 🤣 I’ll give Turner a break on this one.”
While a fifth said: “Naughty boy Toney, moving the ball & the foam whilst ref wasn’t looking! Still a useless wall with that gap & GK in wrong position.”

In that time the Treble-winners have played nine matches — including the two that saw them lift the Club World Cup before Christmas.
Haaland, 23, did a light session on Monday in Abu Dhabi in what will be a huge lift to Pep Guardiola and his side.
City return home tomorrow to prepare for Friday’s FA Cup fourth-round trip to Tottenham — the start of a busy few weeks.
However, boss Guardiola is likely to be cautious with his superstar forward this time.

Haaland returned to training at the start of January ahead of the 5-0  Cup rout of Huddersfield in round three of the FA Cup, only to be ordered to rest as he could still feel the injury.
That setback now looks to be behind him and City will be praying he is soon back in the squad.
Guardiola said ahead of his side’s last match — a 3-2 win at Newcastle on January 13 — that he hoped Haaland would be back for the end of the month and that looks on.
City were boosted in their win over the Magpies by the return of captain Kevin De Bruyne, who has missed the majority of this season with a hamstring injury he picked up against Burnley in the club’s season opener.

Defender John Stones, out since December 27 with an ankle injury, also trained with the first team over the weekend.
Guardiola will be hoping the return of three of his key players will go smoothly as they fight for trophies on three fronts in the season run-in.
City are currently five points off Liverpool with a game in hand as they look to win a fourth consecutive league title. More

His impressive form has seen him linked with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.
According to the Mail, Spurs are also keen on Branthwaite, despite already improving their defence this month.
Ange Postecoglou’s side beat off competition from Bayern Munich to sign Radu Dragusin from Genoa in a deal worth £21.5million plus add-ons.
Djed Spence also moved in the opposite direction on loan as part of the deal, with Tottenham covering his wages.

Despite Dragusin’s arrival, Spurs remain interested in strengthening their back line.
Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have both missed numerous games due to injury and, in the latter’s case, suspensions.
Postecoglou had to make do with a makeshift centre-back partnership comprised of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies earlier in the campaign.

He went on to impress in loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and PSV Eindhoven, before breaking into Dyche’s starting XI this season.
The strapping 6ft 5in defender is an England Under-21s regular and skippered Lee Carsley’s side in their last match.
Gareth Southgate has kept an eye on his form this term, watching him in person at Goodison Park last month.
Tottenham are trying to get a deal over the line for highly-rated Club Brugge winger Antonio Nusa this month.
The Lilywhites remain in talks with the Belgian side, who are said to be demanding £25m for the 18-year-old’s signature.
A deal this month would likely see Nusa remain at Brugge on loan until the end of the season.
As for outgoings, SunSport revealed earlier this week that Tottenham had rejected a £20m bid from Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr for defender Emerson Royal.
Royal, 25, is happy at Spurs, but the Saudi Pro League side could launch a new bid.

I played with Gareth Bale at Tottenham and couldn’t believe his pre-match meal… I tried it once and it did not go well

JERMAINE JENAS has revealed Gareth Bale stunned Tottenham team-mates with his choice of pre-match meal. And the pundit explained why trying it himself backfired.

Jenas bemused many viewers during TNT Sports’ coverage of Brighton’s 0-0 draw with Wolves by discussing food habits.
And Bale’s choice remains his most memorable match-day munching moment – for all sorts of reasons.
Brighton’s ex-Spurs full-back Pascal Gross sparked the conversation before kick-off on Monday night with his own revelation to the broadcaster about his pre-game eating.
Gross said he opts for rice, chicken and olive oil …. topped off by Weetabix!

TNT commentator Adam Summerton called that “quite the combination” as the pundits returned to the debate at half-time.
Jenas suggested: “I bet that’s just a superstition as well.
“There would have been one day where he had a bit of Weetabix as an extra and prob scored two goals and got an assist and thought that’s it, he has the formula.”
And when Summerton asked for the ex-England midfielder’s own selections back in the day, he replied: “I always struggled to eat.

“I just had a big bowl of cereal and just drank a lot of Lucozade I think. Night games was a lot easier pasta and chicken.”
    Then came Jenas’ Bale tale.
He explained: “The only meal I remember looking at and thinking why and how was Gareth Bale used to have like five slices of toast and a mountain of baked beans.
“I tried it once, it didn’t go well for me.”
But viewers seemed to think the main “cereal” offender was Jenas – for talking about food rather than football.
One claimed: “Discussing how many baked beans Gareth Bale used to eat has to be an all time low.”
Another posted: “Jenas talking about liking cereal, absolutely amazing commentary once again.”
And a third viewer admitted just how surprised he was by the conversation.
He said: “Well, learning about Gareth Bale liking baked beans on toast wasn’t in my commentary bingo card.” More

Awkward moment Peter Crouch says ‘Abbey Clancy would’ve slapped me’ live on TNT Sports as man proposes in Amex tunnel

PETER CROUCH hilariously claimed wife Abbey Clancy “would have given me a slap” had he proposed like a man did at Brighton’s clash with Wolves on Monday night. Before the match, TNT Sports showed a clip of a man getting down on one knee and proposing to a woman believed to be part of Brighton’s press room security.

And presenter Lynsey Hipgrave said: “Such a family feel here and there was a special moment earlier when we got to the ground here at the Amex.”
The couple hugged after the woman presumably said yes, with those around the pair applauding the emotional moment.
Ex-Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell, part of the punditry team alongside Crouch, added: “She looks quite surprised there.”
And Crouch, 42, replied: “She does, yeah, she’s thinking ‘In the tunnel, really? Here?”‘.

Hipgrave then responded: “I’m presuming that’s where they met as they work together.”
Before Sidwell asked Crouch: “How would that have gone down with Abbey [Clancy]?’
And the former England striker brilliantly said: “She’s not as into football as I’m sure this lady is. She would have given me a slap.”
Hipgrave rounded off the segment by saying: “From Seagulls to love birds.”

    And Crouch added: “Beautiful moment.”
Ex-Tottenham and Liverpool man Crouch, has been married to model Clancy, 38, since 2011.
And while the couple may not have been overly impressed by the proposal, it was probably the most memorable part of Crouch’s evening as Brighton played out a goalless draw with Wolves.
The point takes Roberto De Zerbi’s side above Manchester United into seventh place, while Wolves remain 11th having picked up 10 points from their last four Premier League games.

Chelsea star Moises Caicedo hides secret family turmoil as Britain’s most expensive star fights to live up to price tag

MOISES CAICEDO has been hiding a secret family turmoil while battling to live up to his billing as Britain’s most expensive footballer. The £115million Chelsea midfielder is only now able to relax knowing his loved ones are safe back home in strife-torn Ecuador.

Bombs, gang violence and even an armed incursion on set during a live TV broadcast have rocked the South American country, with the shockwaves reaching all the way to Stamford Bridge.
Caicedo, who cost the Blues £100m up front with a further £15m due in add-ons, is preparing for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi- final second leg against Middlesbrough, with Chelsea trailing 1-0 from the first game.
But football has been the last thing on his mind in recent times, with Chelsea even forking out for security to protect their star player’s relatives during the turmoil.
Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino said: “It is true that a few weeks ago he was really worried.

“The situation is not easy. In South America it is not only Ecuador. Normally, the club cares not just for him but for everyone.
“If you have problems, the club is there to try to help us in different ways.
“If it has happened it is a good thing from the club to help the player because we need him in his best condition to compete.
“Every day we have been talking about how the situation is in Ecuador. At the moment it is good news, in his case, with his family.
Most read in FootballTrouble in EcuadorEcuador went into a 60-day state of emergency on January 8.

The country is coming off its bloodiest year on record – with international figures showing 42 homicides per thousand inhabitants in 2023.
The country’s 17 million population found themselves under a curfew enforced by armed soldiers.
Citizens were restricted from moving freely and assembling, while police were allowed to enter homes without a court order.
The drastic measures came as a response to the rampant violence in Ecuador’s notorious prisons.

“I only know that the family is good and safe.
“You know very well that this could affect the performance of the player if something is going wrong with the family.
“He is OK now, he feels better. He says the situation there is not normal but it is improving and now it is more relaxed.”
The situation contains chilling echoes of Liverpool forward Luiz Diaz’s living nightmare when his parents were kidnapped by armed men on motorbikes back home in Colombia at the end of last year.
In the last 24 hours alone, police in Ecuador arrested 68 suspected gangsters who stormed a hospital to protect one of their members receiving treatment in the facility.
Nurses and doctors were taken hostage and gunfire exchanged with cops.
The unrest stems from Ecuador president Daniel Noboa’s declared war on organised crime in Caicedo’s homeland.
Even so, Caicedo, the youngest of 10 siblings, has not missed a minute of Chelsea’s last five games.
And is set to figure on Tuesday night for what Pochettino admits is the biggest match of his reign so far. For him and his players.
They trail mid-table Championship side Middlesbrough by a single goal.
The embarrassing first-leg defeat was a frosty night in every sense, with the fans venting their anger at the performance and the behaviour of the Chelsea players at the final whistle.
It is now eight games since they lost at home.
But with Armando Broja still their only fit striker, it will be tough for Chelsea.
Pochettino said: “We talk about the beauty of the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, it’s that the inferior team can match you. Sometimes you can suffer some problems. It’s a mix but we cannot pay too much attention.
“If tomorrow we are good and we play well from the beginning and show the right attitude, the fans are going to be behind us.”
Asked straight up if this is the biggest night yet since taking charge of Chelsea back in July, Pochettino replied: “Yes, because it is access to the final.
“We need to be convincing if we are going to win. It is the opportunity to play in a final so it is the most important so far.
“I like this kind of challenge. We want to be in that situation and play in a semi-final — but for Middlesbrough it is going to be tough also. They need to defend their 1-0 lead.
“We suffered some criticism, which was good, and now it is the chance to be free and play and go and show the road to the final.
“The excitement to play this game, in a personal way, is so exciting. Because it is 90 minutes away from playing again at Wembley in a final, to have the possibility to win a title.
“I am so motivated and, of course, we try to translate to the players how good it is to play a final at Wembley.
“Some players have experience of already being in a final and we need to translate this to the younger ones about the possibility to play there, in a special place, and it is really important.

“We need to match their desire and energy. That’s the most important because we will face a team that is going to fight and be strong and have some players that can cause us problems.

That is because Chelsea finished down in 12th place last season and are still in mid-table obscurity under Mauricio Pochettino.
And while Boehly has shelled out more than £1billion on transfers, his sanctioning of bizarre promotional opportunities continues to rile supporters.
The latest of these came over the weekend when Chelsea’s global hospitality partner, Hilton Hotels, created a temporary hotel room on the balcony of the Matthew Harding Stand.
The gimmick, a part of Hilton’s advertising campaign, consisted of a bed, a wall-mounted television and several branded dressing gowns on show for an empty Stamford Bridge.
