Chris Wilder faces punishment for ‘Sandwichgate’ rant as Sheff Utd boss charged by FA for breaking rules vs Palace

CHRIS WILDER faces punishment from the FA after his “Sandwichgate” rant last month. The Sheffield United boss launched a blistering attack on a bread-devouring official after his team’s 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Wilder, 56, claimed “every 50/50 or tight decision” went against the relegation-threatened Blades.
And he has now been charged by the FA for breaching rule E3.1 in relation to media comments.
It’s alleged that Wilder’s words constituted improper conduct, in that they implied bias and/or attacked the integrity of the referee, and/or brought the game into disrepute.
He now faces a potential two-game touchline ban for his words, with the Blades facing Brighton and Wolves next.

The Sheffield United boss said at the time: “I’ve been to see the referee, I’ve told him that (every decision went against Sheffield United).
“One of his assistants was eating a sandwich at the time and I thought that was a complete lack of respect.
“Hopefully he was enjoying his sandwich while talking to a Premier League manager.”
Wilder continued: “It’s yet again another ridiculous performance from the referee.

“I was told by a Premier League referee, who I’ve known for a long time and who’s as honest as the day is long. He said get ready because every tight decision will go against you.
“He said every 50/50 decision will go against you. We had two bookings in the first half of the game but they weren’t bookings. They were just a coming together.
Awkward handshake between Laura Woods and Chris Wilder live on TNT Sports leaves host wincing in pain
“Their boy absolutely takes our goalkeeper out, we have to change goalkeepers and the boy doesn’t get booked. He says it was an accident, he clashed, it makes no odds if it’s an accident or it’s not an accident. It’s a yellow card.
“We pick up four yellow cards, they pick up one at the death for time wasting. They’re taking an age. Their game management was good, but they’re taking an age.
“We talked with Howard Webb about speeding the game up and making sure that referees have got a grip on that and he could hear the frustration for the supporters. He could see our frustration from our players.
“Every 50/50 or tight decision goes against us and if that’s what we’re going to have to deal with between now and the end of the season, we’re going to deal with it.”
Wilder has until February 16th to respond to the charge.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was charged with the same offence following his side’s defeat to Newcastle in November.
But his case was cleared by the FA following a hearing by the Regulatory Commission.

West Ham fans and board must pick between possession or Prague in the great David Moyes debate

IT is make your mind up time at West Ham – in the stands and the boardroom.David Moyes, the man who delivered the club’s first trophy in 43 years in June, is under pressure again after Sunday’s 6-0 mauling by Arsenal made it seven games without a win.
David Moyes has come under scrutiny in recent weeksCredit: Alamy
Many match-going fans voted with their feet by leaving before half-time, with protests over the Scot’s pragmatic style of play increasing after their New Year’s slump in form.
Not long ago the Hammers were riding high after his tactics had delivered smash-and-grab wins over Manchester United and Arsenal.
A new contract was ready to be signed and many were celebrating another European charge.
Supporters, and more importantly the owners, have flip-flopped since.

Moyes in becomes Moyes out, the contract is on and then it is off again, to be reviewed at a later date. The can kicked down the road.
The lack of clarity is alarming and must be addressed.
David Sullivan is not someone who sacks managers lightly, though he came close at times last season. If he still trusts Moyes to continue at the London Stadium it must be made clear given the manager’s contract is up this summer.
The crucial question is: What do they want?

David Moyes’ West Ham recordBy Kealan Hughes
    Games – 243
    Wins – 107
    Draws – 48
    Losses – 88
    Goals scored – 373
    Goals conceded – 332
    Trophies won – 1
    Top 10 finishes – 2

Pretty football or points? Possession or Prague? The answer from fans will always be both, it is what everyone dreams of for their club.
    The reality is different.
They cannot endlessly spend to chase perfection like the Big Six sides they are trying to push out of the European places. Someone has to ensure caution, missteps on the climb upwards can be fatal.
The last time West Ham’s owners followed what the fans wanted, Manuel Pellegrini arrived and dragged them into a relegation battle from which Moyes returned to save them.
Fuming West Ham fans stream out of London Stadium before HALF-TIME during Arsenal drubbing
It is a fact the former Everton boss is always keen to point out. But fans do not need reminding and do not want to live in the past, they want to look ahead.
With a squad which boasts Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and, when fit Lucas Paqueta, things should be getting better.
But a recent spate of injuries, absences and a botched end to the January window have turned a top six push into another East London crisis.
When Moyes’ football doesn’t work it can be hideous to watch, when it does there is a sadistic enjoyment from grabbing results from more progressive sides. It has delivered many memorable moments.
And there can be no doubting it has taken West Ham forward. The East Londoners were a point above the relegation zone when Moyes returned in December 2019.
There have been two top seven finishes, a Europa League semi-final and a European trophy since.
It is ridiculous to think that a manager who has delivered so much recent success has it all to prove again.
But after a run of games where he has hit out at the side for being weak and a mile away from what he wants, the next few games feel crucial.
Nottingham Forest, Brentford, Everton and Burnley offer the chance to change the narrative once again, as does their return to European action in early March – having topped their group for a third season in a row before Christmas.
But the most recent window has also left Moyes with one hand tied behind his back.
Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma were deemed surplus to requirements and allowed to leave right at the end of the window, but without a replacement.

Moyes has admitted concern about the lack of balance in his squad since, having made it clear he wanted a left winger even before letting one go.
Right-back Ben Johnson started at left wing against Arsenal, with forwards Danny Ings and Maxwel Cornet watching from the bench. Moyes cannot be happy with his options.
There have always been frustrations over his cautious approach to transfers, and there were again last month with the former Manchester United boss unsure any of the targets presented good value – irritating those around him.
But blame must also lie with the new technical director, Tim Steidten.
The German is yet to truly impress since moving to London. Many deals have been attributed to the work of others and if anything the feeling is Steidten and Moyes have worked against one another rather than with.

There have been suggestions that whoever stays this summer, the other could leave.
Whatever the fallout, West Ham fans want and deserve answers and a direction to get on board with and it now seems Moyes must show he can still be the future once more. More

United tried in vain to sign him all summer in 2022, with the midfielder ultimately snubbing them even after a fee was agreed with Barcelona.
However, he is now finally open to a transfer, and several clubs are reportedly prepared to battle it out for his signature.
Man Utd are expected to re-enter the race to sign De Jong, but Silvestre has warned that signing him could hinder Kobbie Mainoo’s development.
The ex-United star told Bettingexpert.com: “If a player like Frenkie de Jong is available, he should be considered. But again you look at Kobbie and we talked about Scott, and we have Casemiro here.

“Will De Jong be an upgrade? Of course. Ahead of Kobbie but if you want to continue developing Mainoo and give him the time, I don’t think De Jong should come in.”
He added: “If you qualify for the Champions League, then signing De Jong makes sense. You have to consider him for sure.

“He’s a top player but putting him in a midfield where the manager likes to play with two defensive midfielders, if you play with three, it could be a different proposition.
“So the answer is yes, do consider him.”

NICOLAS JACKSON  faces a rollicking from Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino over his lack of discipline. The Senegal striker, 22, collected his ninth booking of the season on Monday for leaving the BENCH to run across the pitch and celebrate  Blues’ final goal in the 3-1 win at Crystal Palace.

Despite having  been subbed 15 minutes earlier, Jackson dashed to join his team-mates who were celebrating an Enzo Fernandez strike in injury time.
Jackson now has as many yellow cards as goals this term — and is one caution away from a two-match ban.
But only one of his nine bookings has been for a foul, with the others for dissent (4), arguing (2), not retreating and now entering the pitch.
Boss Poch warned Jackson and his young stars about their number of bookings back in September after the frontman picked up five in his first six Prem outings and served a suspension.

At the time, Pochettino said: “Players like Nico who are so young and feeling the Premier League and  learning, they need time.
“Players when they are young without experience make mistakes.
“This is why we feel disappointed because we are seeing too many situations like this.
“We need to change as soon as possible. We need to grow up like a team.”
