Liverpool and Arsenal have been credited with an interest in the Real Madrid star but United were reportedly considering a summer move.
Asensio, 27, is out of contract in the summer and Barcelona have made contact with him, according to Sport.
Asensio is now represented by superagent Jorge Mendes, who has a close relationship with Barca president Joan Laporta.
But Real are keen to keep Asensio and have opened negotiations for a new deal.

However, an agreement is yet to be reached between the two parties with Asensio demanding a higher salary than Los Blancos are willing to pay.
That could open the door to United, who are able to approach Asensio on a pre-contract basis.
And the Red Devils are one of a few clubs who would be able to afford Asensio’s reported £120,000-a-week salary.
Asensio joined Real Madrid from Mallorca for around £3.5million in 2014.

He did not hold back in listing what needed to improve, including calling for as many as ten new signings.
Rangnick also picked out three players who caused problems behind the scenes and worsened squad morale in an interview with Bild.
Of the trio, Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba have since left the club, but Antony Martial remains after a short loan spell at Sevilla last season.
Martial was welcomed back into the squad by Erik ten Hag but he recently lost his place in the side following the arrival of Wout Weghorst this month.

The Dutchman has worked wonders with the Red Devils and also come up with creative ways to boost squad morale.
After the game against Crystal Palace this month the United squad reportedly arrived back in Manchester at 1.30am with the temperature at -3C.
But Ten Hag and United employees thought up a sweet way to cheer up the team… handing every player some de-icer to clear their frozen car windscreens quickly.
The de-icer supposedly saved the players ten minutes and it was a boost “when you’re freezing, tired and just want your bed.”

Bruno Fernandes also claimed Ten Hag joining in on a team punishment following the embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Brentford was a turning point in their season.

Antonio, 32, has made just nine Premier League starts this campaign following the £30.5million summer arrival of Gianluca Scamacca.
And the £15m signing of Danny Ings this month has pushed the Jamaica international down the pecking order even further.
After seven years with the Hammers, Antonio has been linked with moves away to Prem rivals Chelsea and Wolves.
SunSport believe the player’s name has also been circulating around several teams in the United States.

If he was to leave, boss David Moyes would rather he did not join a side currently battling with West Ham at the bottom of the league.
But with both Scamacca and Ings struggling with knee injuries, it is incredibly unlikely the Irons will let Antonio go this month.
West Ham have only scored 17 goals in 20 top-flight games so far this season, with Antonio notching just two of those.
His contract expires in 2024 and there is also an option for a one-year extension.

The North Londoners have been in negotiations all month and are willing to pay the £39.9million release clause.
It is understood though that Sporting want to keep Porro until at least after Saturday, when they play Porto in the Taca da Liga final – Portugal’s equivalent of the League Cup.
There remains a confidence the transfer will eventually go through but the delay is no doubt frustrating Spurs fans.

Danjuma netted six goals in 11 appearances in Europe while also scoring a further 10 goals in 23 LaLiga matches for Villarreal.

Man Utd reserves paid HUGE match bonus even if they were on just £250-a-week… but Sir Alex Ferguson stopped it

MANCHESTER UNITED reserves used to receive a £10,000 match bonus… until Sir Alex Ferguson put a lid on the pay structure. That’s according to ex-United stopper Ben Foster.

Ben Foster played 23 times for Manchester UnitedCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
The 35-year-old announced his retirement from football in September and now spends his time talking about the game.
Most of the time he’s doing it on his podcast “Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast”, which is available to watch on YouTube.
He often speaks about his career and occasionally goes back to his early days at Old Trafford.
During a recent episode, where was joined by Soccer AM star Tubes, he was discussing bonuses and match fees.

And remarkably, Foster revealed how reserve players earning as little as £250-per-week would be paid 40 times that for simply coming onto the pitch.
Although players would only get half that amount if they were on the pitch for just 20 minutes.
Speaking on the Fozcast, he said: “It’s basically an incentive to say ‘if you can get on the pitch or start a game, we will look after you, we will pay you a big bonus’.
“So they’re happy to say, if you’re doing well and making it into the pitch, you’re earning your money, we will pay you the bonus payments.

“That clause is probably a standard fee for a younger player, £10,000 would be a standard fee, it doesn’t matter if you were on £250-a-week or £6,000-per-week like me, if you made it onto the pitch, you would get £10,000-per-week.
“If you come on as a sub, you get half of that.
Every player would also receive an additional £500 for every point won in the Premier League.
And Foster jokiningly said: “We were winning every single time back then.”
But the former goalkeeper revealed that once he exited the club they eventually changed the win bonus, meaning players would only be paid extra for winning silverware.
Foster added: “That was 15 years ago, bonus payments, win bonuses have gone up like you wouldn’t believe, I’m talking an awful increase.
“But what Manchester United did when I left in 2010, they completely changed the bonus structure.
“They were in the era of dominance, complete dominance, when they were always in the Champions League final, always winning the Premier League and always winning the League Cup and FA Cup.
“So they changed it and said you will only get a bonus if you win the Premier League or Champions League and the same thing with the FA Cup and League Cup.

“The appearance fee will always be there, but the win bonus for success, you will only get it if you win, you have to win the Premier League.
“So they could play a 38-game season, not win anything and they’re not getting any win bonus.” More
