Chelsea star Jorginho confronted Italy legend Antonio Cassano on the beach after being snubbed for Messi in Ballon d’Or

ANTONIO CASSANO was confronted by Jorginho while on holiday after claiming the Italy hero should NOT win the Ballon d’Or.A number of football figures had chosen the now-Arsenal midfielder as their pick for the 2021 crown after winning the Champions League and Euro 2020.

But Cassano laughed off the suggestion – before bumping into Jorginho in hilarious circumstances on the beach.
For from being annoyed, Jorginho agreed with Cassano, now 40, that Lionel Messi was a better bet for the Ballon d’Or.
The ex-striker revealed on the Twitch channel of Christian Vieri: “Remember when I said any journalist who voted for Jorginho as Ballon d’Or should have his licence taken away?
“Well, I was in Formentera with my family and just as I sat down, I felt a touch.
“‘Antonio, you’re great!’ the voice says.
“I turn around to ask who he was, he took off his glasses and mask, and it was Jorginho.
“I told him, Jorgi, can you believe the scandal if they should give you the Ballon d’Or and not to Messi?
“He replied that he absolutely agreed with me, Messi should always win it.”

Jorginho was pictured enjoying a post-season break on the Balearic island of Formentera with girlfriend Catherine Harding.
The couple also soaked up the sun in Mykonos just days after he lifted the Euros trophy.
Former Chelsea great Gianfranco Zola is one of the game’s respected voices who had tipped Jorginho to win the Ballon d’Or.
The honour would be “deserved”, said the Italian, after surprise triumphs for Chelsea and Italy.
And Jorginho has since added to his trophy collection yet again, with a goal in the penalty shootout win over Villarreal that earned the Uefa Super Cup.
Last month, the Italian made a shock £12million move to Arsenal after slipping down the Stamford Bridge pecking order under Graham Potter. More

Hibbert, who turns 42 this month, played 328 times across 16 seasons for Everton.
And he retired from football at the end of the 2015-16 campaign as a Goodison Park icon.
However, Hibbert has relocated to France after penning a deal with tenth-tier minnows Louzy.
The defender made the shock move a little over a year ago.
And he has now lifted the lid on his decision to play once more.
Hibbert told SoFoot: “[Louzy] is like day and night. That’s what I came for – tranquillity. I’m not here to retire but to do something different, a new experience.
“With my wife, we searched everywhere in France… I know a few people who live not far from Louzy and we decided to try it.
“I’m happy here. We laugh a lot, I enjoy spending lots of time with my children and I take the time to work on my business.”

According to Louzy president Jerome Archambeau, Hibbert didn’t want any fanfare when he joined in November.
Archambeau added: “He didn’t want any media. He was clear.
“The purpose of him coming here was for a change of scenery and to find peace.
“He didn’t want complete anonymity but he didn’t wish to make the front page of all the newspapers either.
“After we posted on Facebook about his arrival, we were harassed constantly. We both couldn’t take it anymore.
“We received many emails from English supporters, who wanted to buy Louzy jerseys.
    “It’s completely crazy.” More

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag hints at shock position change for Bruno Fernandes and Victor Lindelof in top-four race

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Erik ten Hag has hinted at potential position changes for Bruno Fernandes and Victor Lindelof. The Red Devils cruised into the Carabao Cup final with a 5-0 win on aggregate against Nottingham Forest.

But the game saw two first-team stars play in new positions.
Ten Hag replaced three attacking players after an hour, and on came Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford for Alejandro Garnacho, Wout Weghorst and Antony.
Instead of Sancho occupying the right flank, as he has done many times in his career, the England international operated centrally.
Interestingly, Fernandes was sent out wide to the right.

The Dutchman said on Fernandes: “It was one thought about, but also to bring a different dynamic in the team, I wanted to see how that works, we brought Bruno more times before in the wide position.
“I think it’s difficult to anticipate it when you first have to deal with Antony, then you bring a semi-wide player there, it’s difficult to anticipate, Bruno is really effective but I want to see the combination with Jadon and Anthony Martial, we’ve seen a different dynamic, that can help us and give us more opportunities in the future.”

Fernandes provided the goods as his outside of the foot pass found Fred for United’s second of the night.
The midfielder, who regularly captains the side in Harry Maguire’s absence, says he learned the skill from Ricardo Quaresma.

And when Lindelof replaced Casemiro with ten minutes to go, the Swede playing in holding midfield.
But Ten Hag says Lindelof was trained there during his Benfica days.
On Lindelof, Ten Hag said: “He was educated as a six, a control, holding midfielder in Benfica, I know he can do that.
“We tried it in training, maybe one game, I want my centre halves in midfield positions so we create dynamics to construct more dynamic.”
Man Utd will play Newcastle at Wembley for the Carabao Cup on February 26.
But Fernandes is keen for United to not lose focus in their pursuit of a top-four finish.
Fernandes and Lindelof becoming familiar in new roles could help Ten Hag rotate his team better to maintain momentum.
Fernandes said: “Obviously it’s really good.

Man City ‘considering a landmark pre-season tour of India ahead of 2023-24 season in snub to USA and East Asia’

And Pep Guardiola’s men chose a training camp in America ahead of the current season.
But Football Insider understand English champions Man City are now looking at the possibility of a visit to India before the 2023/24 schedule.
City Football Group, a holding company that owns Man City and a host of other clubs around the world, saw their side Mumbai City claim their first Indian Super League title in 2021.
And they are seven points clear at the top of the table this season following a superb 16-game unbeaten run.

It is acknowledged that Man City’s trip to India could be hampered by the searing heat and humid conditions.
However, reports suggest the club believe the commercial opportunities outweigh the logistical issues.
It is expected that a trip to India would consist of a one-off match rather than a lengthy tour.
And a clash with Mumbai City seems unlikely given they are not one of the best-supported sides in the ISL.

It is more likely Man City would face some form of all-star team consisting of players from different Indian top-flight clubs.

Chelsea new boy Enzo Fernandez among several players added to Dream Team – starting prices revealed

A host of new players have been added to Dream Team in the wake of the January transfer window. Most prominent among the new arrivals is Enzo Fernandez, whose move to Chelsea commanded a British record fee of £107million.
Dream Team gaffers can recruit the Argentina international for £3m but does the World Cup winner have the makings of a successful asset?
    Worth the money?Credit: getty
Putting aside the massive transfer fee for a moment, the 22-year-old is clearly a talented player who will probably improve the Blues’ midfield functionality and balance but the Stamford Bridge faithful shouldn’t expect a tide of goal involvements.
As evidenced by his performances in Qatar, Fernandez is a genuine all-rounder in the middle of the park.
He’s not an out-and-out defensive anchor and he’s not an advanced playmaker; to describe him as box-to-box midfielder wouldn’t be quite right either.
That he’s so adaptable is one of his great strengths but the fact he’s rarely a goalscorer limits his Dream Team viability.
An impressive passer of the ball, he chips in with more than his fair share of assists (six for Benfica in the first half of this season) but in the world of Dream Team the best midfielders are those who maintain a high attacking output, goals and all.

Elsewhere, Man United have a new centre-midfielder of their own in the form of Marcel Sabizter, on loan from Bayern Munich.
Primarily, the Austria international has been brought in to deputise for Christian Eriksen (£3.2m), who is expected to be sidelined until April with an ankle injury.
    Most read in Dream Team
The 28-year-old has a more willing engine than the Dane so he may improve the Red Devils’ midfield industry but he’s not as technical proficient in tight areas or as naturally creative.
Sabitzer certainly isn’t shot shy though, he’s happy to try his luck from distance and will take up advanced positions.
He was very much a goalscoring midfielder during his time with RB Leipzig but he’s struggled in that department since his move to the German champions.
Granted, a vast number of his appearances have come as a substitute but even so, two goals in 54 games represents a serious drop off.
However, if Erik ten Hag can coax Sabitzer’s Leipzig form out of him then he could be great value at £2.5m – Man United play plenty of games this month.
Spurs got their man eventuallyCredit: getty
Is Pedro Porro the answer to Spurs’ nagging right-back problem?
Those familiar with the 23-year-old believe him to be perfectly suited to Antonio Conte’s preferred system and his return of two goals and six assists in 14 league games for Sporting CP this term suggests he has the necessary attributes to play his part in the final third.
It goes without saying that defenders who supply regular goal involvements are worth their weight in gold – Porro will start at £2.5m.
    NEW ADDITIONS TO DREAM TEAM

    Enzo Fernandez – Midfielder – Chelsea – £3m
    Marcel Sabitzer – Midfielder – Man United – £2.5m
    Illia Zabarnyi – Defender – Bournemouth – £1.5m
    Hamed Traore – Midfielder – Bournemouth – £2m
    Naouirou Ahamada – Midfielder – Crystal Palace – £1.5m
    Sasa Lukic – Midfielder – Fulham – £1.5m
    Harry Souttar – Defender – Leicester – £2m
    Keylor Navas – Goalkeeper – Nottingham Forest – £2m
    Felipe – Defender – Nottingham Forest – £1.5m
    Paul Onuachu – Striker – Southampton – £2m
    Kamaldeen Sulemana – Midfielder – Southampton – £2m
    Pedro Porro – Defender – Spurs – £2.5m
    Weston McKennie – Midfielder – Leeds – £2m

Please be aware that the names listed above are just those added in the latest batch.

If there’s a January signing you think is missing it may be that the player was added previously, check the Stats Centre to confirm.
As is always the case, it’s probably best for Dream Team bosses to wait for a look at how the new arrivals adapt to a new challenge before making any rash decisions. More

Everton set to suffer another transfer blow with Andre Ayew closing in on Nottingham Forest free move

EVERTON are set to suffer another setback with Andre Ayew reportedly closing in on a free move to Nottingham Forest. The Toffees struggled to make headway in the January window as they fight to keep their Premier League status.

The club did not make a permanent signing last month but had been linked with a move for former Swansea City striker Andre Ayew, who is now a free agent.
The 33-year-old left Qatari club Al-Sadd SC at the end of January after an 18-month spell in the Middle East.
Now available for nothing, Sports Witness report that Forest are looking to bring him to the City Ground.
They have already signed an extraordinary 29 players since coming up last season but could yet move for more firepower.

Chris Wood had already been bought in to beef up the forward line but Taiwo Awoniyi is reportedly set for a spell on the sidelines due to injury.
Ayew was a consistent goal threat during both spells at Swansea.
He has also already worked with Steve Cooper when the Forest boss managed the Welsh club.
Missing out on another target would compound what has already been a difficult 2023 for Everton.

Chelsea interested in Sofyan Amrabat transfer and Todd Boehly ‘made shock deadline day swoop for Fiorentina midfielder’

In fact, the West Londoners spent as much this month as the entire Premier League did in January 2022.
According to El Chringuito, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly tried another ambitious bid last Tuesday as he targeted Amrabat.
The midfielder has put together a number of impressive performances in Serie A.
The 26-year-old was also instrumental during the 2022 World Cup when Morocco became the first ever African nation to make it to the competition’s semi-finals.

The Moroccan star has attracted plenty of interest, with the likes of Barcelona and Liverpool leading the pack.
However, Fiorentina rejected multiple bids for Amrabat as they insisted he was not for sale.

Three new signings can completely transform Chelsea’s feeble attack under Potter with Fernandez, Madueke and Mudryk

HAVING bought the club off of Roman Abramovich last May, American businessman Todd Boehly now has two transfer windows under his belt at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have enjoyed football’s greatest riches over the past two decades during the Abramovich era and so Boehly had gargantuan shoes to fill.
Chelsea have spent £326m in January on players including Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Noni Madueke
But the American hasn’t messed around, spending more money than any other club in the history of the January market, splashing out £326 million to sign eight new players, including Mykhailo Mudryk for £88million as well as Enzo Fernandez for £107million.
The signings have been astonishing with others arriving including Joao Felix, Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos and David Fofana.
But can these players flip Chelsea’s fortunes on their head this season?
    Enzo Fernandez
Having been linked with Manchester United during his time with River Plate, Enzo Fernandez made a smart decision to sign for Benfica as a stepping stone to one of Europe’s top five leagues.
    READ MORE CHELSEA
The Argentine star was guaranteed playing time under German coach Roger Schmidt which meant that he would likely receive a call-up to the Argentina national team for the World Cup in Qatar.
This is exactly how things worked out.
Fernandez not only received a call-up to Lionel Scaloni’s side but played a key role in helping his country lift the prize for the first time in 36 years.
Fernandez is now the most expensive signing in English football history, breaking the £100million fee Manchester City spent on Jack Grealish in 2021.

While the price tag may weigh heavily on his shoulders, Fernandez is still an astute signing for the Blues and a player who was desperately needed at Stamford Bridge.
Jorginho has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League since joining Chelsea in 2018 from Napoli.
The Italian was the key man for Chelsea to break opposition lines and to dictate the tempo of their game in the middle of the park.
The 31-year-old has been moved on to rivals Arsenal, but his replacement is sharper, more mobile and has a much higher ceiling.
Fernandez’s role at Chelsea under Graham Potter will not involve him being a marauding central midfielder or a box-to-box player but to simply keep things ticking, looking to move the ball around from side to side with his centre-backs.
Enzo Fernandez was a key player in the World Cup final
Fernandez has dropped beside the centre-backs to receive possession in space. Noticing the right-back pushing higher on the right, the Argentine midfielder plays a sumptuous switch of the play out to the flank, forcing the opponent to push across.
The former River Plate youth product will be important to help Chelsea move the opposition in order to find gaps in their defensive block.
As Pep Guardiola famously once said: “We do not pass to move the ball, we pass to move the opposition.”
Having a player like Fernandez will be so important for Chelsea to move the ball well around the back and midfield as he is excellent when receiving under pressure and is superb at switching the play from side to side.
The reason this is so vital is because the opposition will shift their defensive block from side to side as well in correlation with the movement of the ball in order to defend the ball-side.
However, it is extremely difficult to do this consistently without gaps opening up in the block and so this is where Fernandez’s ability will shine through.
Chelsea’s new signing will be the player tasked with breaking the lines of the opposition to play to higher areas of the pitch when these spaces do open up in the opponent’s defensive block.
Enzo Fernandez’s pass map from the World Cup final
Having attracted Sporting into a deeper area, Fernandez notices a free man standing in the middle of the pitch and plays an excellent through pass into the player’s feet to break the opposition’s lines.
Having a mobile deep-lying playmaker capable of playing between the lines is something that all top sides must possess in order to play a possession-based style of football.
Liverpool have Thiago, Arsenal have Thomas Partey with Jorginho as a rotation option, Manchester City have Rodri, Manchester United have Christian Eriksen and new signing Marcel Sabitzer, Newcastle United have Bruno Guimaraes, and now Chelsea have Enzo Fernandez.
Potter will be hoping that Fernandez’s impact on the team is instant as the Blues don’t possess any other player capable of fulfilling this role.

    Mykhailo Mudryk
Mykhailo Mudryk joined Chelsea for £88million on a lucrative eight-and-a-half year deal from Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.
His debut cameo against Liverpool was certainly promising as Mudryk attempted more dribbles than any other player on the pitch despite coming on for merely 35 minutes.
Mudryk threatens to dribble inside Joe Gomez inside the box but quickly drops his shoulder and pushes the ball to the left, creating an excellent goalscoring opportunity for himself.

The Ukrainian will be a menacing player in the final third for Chelsea due to his ability to dribble past opponents at ease.
Mudryk has a low centre of gravity and can go either way against an onrushing defender which has become more and more important in the modern game for a winger.
This means that the 22-year-old is capable of dribbling inside as well as outside, making it extremely difficult for defenders to predict his movement when squaring him up.
A primary method of dribbling that Mudryk uses is cutting inside before dropping his shoulder and pushing the ball in the opposite direction to fool the defender.
On his debut for Chelsea against Liverpool, Mudryk completed three successful dribbles into the penalty area which averaged out at around one every ten minutes.
Furthermore, over the course of the 2022/23 campaign for Shakhtar, the man dubbed “the Ukrainian Neymar” completed 70 carries into the box in just half a season.
Mykhailo Mudryk is currently the fastest player in the Premier League
Mudryk was found at the back post with an excellent floated cross. His first touch let him down, but the Ukrainian could have easily opened his account on his debut due to being in the right position.
Nonetheless, Mudryk has also proven himself to be a threat in the opposition’s penalty area.
In all competitions for club and country this season, Mudryk averaged 0.52 goals per game which is one every two matches.
This is an exceptional record for a winger whose primary function is assisting others as opposed to putting the ball in the net themselves.
These added goals can only be beneficial for Chelsea who have massively struggled in front of goal this season, having scored 29 times despite having an xG of 38.74 in all competitions.
Even from his debut, the signs were clear that Mudryk will be chipping in with goals in the latter half of the season for the Blues as the new signing found himself in some excellent goalscoring positions.
    Noni Madueke
Another player who can potentially change the club’s fortunes is Noni Madueke.
Having worked with Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy at Jong PSV and with the PSV Eindhoven first-team this season, Madueke’s game has been elevated to a different level.
While new Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo took all the plaudits with the Dutch giants for his outrageous performances, Madueke was quietly going about his business, improving more and more with each passing game.
Madueke is the perfect man to add something different to Potter’s frontline, being a left-footer who primarily operates as a right-winger.
Noni Madueke likes to hug the right touchline
With Mudryk playing as a right-footer on the left and Madueke on the right, it is clear that the former Brighton coach is looking for something similar to Liverpool’s frontline, with more goal-minded players playing in the forward line.
In the past, Chelsea have neglected attacking prowess in their front three, putting a higher emphasis on creativity and so that may be about to change.
Madueke is undoubtedly a goalscoring winger.
The Englishman’s offensive play is resemblant to that of former Chelsea man Arjen Robben.
Madueke collected the ball wide on the right, dropped his shoulder and dribbled inside to the edge of the area before smashing the ball past AC Milan’s goalkeeper in a recent friendly.
The 21-year-old likes to look for the ball out wide, hugging the touchline before dribbling inside the backline and unleashing thunderous strikes on his left foot.
This season, Madueke is averaging an xG of 0.41 per game while scoring 0.47 times per game, almost one in every two matches for PSV.
Of course, the changeover from the Eredivisie to the Premier League will be something that Madueke has to adapt to but given he played academy football with Crystal Palace and Tottenham, the transition may be smoother than normal.
One of Madueke’s best attributes is that he doesn’t rely on team-mates to create chances for him, similarly to fellow new arrival Malo Gusto.
The England U21s international is scintillating when running with the ball at his feet and loves to take on the opposition’s full-back.
This season alone, Madueke has averaged 13.03 dribbles per game with an accuracy of 56.1 per cent as well as registering 66 carries into the penalty area, primarily coming from the right side.
Madueke has shaped his body up to shoot on his left foot. However, instead, he drags it back onto his right, fooling three opposition players in the meantime before getting a right-footed shot away which trickled into the net.
The attacker is a threat for any defender inside the box and his sharp dribbling makes it extremely difficult to stop him from getting past his man to create space for a shot.
The only downside to having Madueke is that he is not the most creative player in Chelsea’s squad with just two assists this season and a total expected assists of merely 2.66.
This means that Potter will need to deploy a more creative player in the starting line-up to complement Madueke’s lack of creativity.
So what does this all mean?
None of these players are Premier League proven.
Only Madueke has prior experience playing in English football but even that was at academy level.
    Read More on The Sun
Nevertheless, with the money spent over the course of Boehly’s short reign at Stamford Bridge, the new owner has put all his eggs in one basket in the hopes that these signings can showcase their quality in West London.
Chelsea are really struggling this season under Potter but if these new players can gel together and form a cohesive unit, the Blues may be on for a very exciting end to the campaign. More
