Mikel Arteta says he’s ‘lucky to still be Arsenal boss’ after tough few years and treats ‘every day like it’s the last’

MIKEL ARTETA has admitted he might be “lucky” to still be in the Arsenal job.The Gunners boss has taken the club to the top of the table and within reach of the Premier League title.
Mikel Arteta has managed to turn things around despite some bumpy periods since taking the Emirates hot seat in December 2019Credit: Reuters
But this stunning season comes after mediocre league campaigns under the Spanish boss which yielded only an eighth-place and fifth-place finish in his two full seasons in charge.
Fans had become deeply divided over the 40-year-old coach with FA Cup success at the end of his first season doing little to quell the frustrations of Arsenal fans.
Arteta has admitted that his previous seasons could have got him the sack.
Asked by ESPN if he would have lasted in the job without the FA Cup win, Arteta said: “I don’t know. Looking back, obviously a lot of things have happened.

“To start your managerial career with no experience at any level and face straight away that success and then having two years of COVID, with all the challenges that we have internally at the club, externally at the club, probably I am lucky to be sitting here today looking back with how it could have developed.
“I have always been fascinated with the journey and living every single day like it is the last and I think you have to take this job especially like this because every day there are lessons, there are challenges.
“In one month, it will be different and in two years’ time maybe they need something else but it is about today.”
Arteta came under the most pressure as Arsenal boss at the beginning of last season when they lost their opening three league games.

He said in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Real Betis game: “I can’t say exactly at this moment, but it will take weeks.

Brighton 1 Crystal Palace 0: Solly March-inspired win keeps Seagulls’ Euro hopes alive and heaps pressure on Vieira

BEWARE the strides of March… if you are a Crystal Palace defender, at least.Fleet-footed Solly March raced past the Eagles backline to open the scoring here and pile more pressure on their boss Patrick Vieira.

And Solly March was their inspiration for it tonightCredit: Reuters
Brighton’s England hopeful did it in the 15th minute too – on March 15.
It was a timely reminder to Gareth Southgate ahead of Thursday’s Three Lions squad announcement, though SunSport understands March is unlikely to be included.
His strike pushed Roberto De Zerbi’s high-fliers level on points with sixth-placed Liverpool and dreaming of an unlikely Champions League charge.
But for Vieira’s Palace, the situation could not be more stark with their ten-year stay in the Premier League at serious risk of ending.
A dramatic loss in form since the turn of the year has seen them fail to win any of their last 11 league games.
Amazingly, they remain in 12th place, a position they have held since a 4-0 home defeat to Spurs on January 4 which started this horror run.
But the real figure that matters is the gap that exists to the drop zone, standing now at just three points.
With a trip to table-topping Arsenal to come on Sunday, Vieira must be worried a bad result at his old club could seal his fate ahead of next week’s international break.
    Most read in Football
At least his side managed a shot on target here, which is more than they had mustered in their THREE preceding league games against Manchester City, Aston Villa and Liverpool.
In fact Wilfried Zaha – so often Brighton’s nemesis – pulled it off inside the first minute as Jason Steele pushed his effort from an acute angle out for a corner.
Palace had been forced to play a rookie in goal due to injuries Vicente Guaita and Sam Johnstone, while Jack Butland was loaned to Manchester United in January.
That meant teenager Joe Whitworth – an academy graduate and lifelong Palace fan – was between the sticks.
The 19-year-old was forced into a tricky early decision as he raced out of his box to head clear a dangerous ball under pressure – and carried it off well.
Brighton made a sleepy start and really should have been punished as Palace wasted a hat-trick of quickfire chances.
First, Odsonne Edouard nodded Nathaniel Clyne’s cross wide, before Michael Olise then fired straight at Steele and then fluffed a header of his own.
Predictably, it was not long until Vieira’s side were made to pay for their wastefulness.
Brighton’s attackers have made a habit of haring into space under De Zerbi and they were at it again with only a quarter of an hour played.
Kaoru Mitoma was the provider, playing a delicious through ball to the on-rushing March, who had timed his run to perfection.

March’s finish was even sweeter as he fired past Whitworth into the far corner to notch his sixth goal of 2023.
De Zerbi said on Wednesday he felt both March and Lewis Dunk deserved to be called up to their national team.
But judging by the way Southgate has continually – and bizarrely – overlooked Dunk since handing the centre-back his one and only cap in 2018, March would do well not to hold his breath.
Palace were extremely fortunate to go down to ten men just before the break.
Midfielder Cheick Doucoure, just back from a suspension after being sent off against Villa, was already on a yellow when he chopped down Moises Caicedo near the edge of the box.
Somehow referee Peter Bankes opted not to go to his pocket – and the whistler let Doucoure off AGAIN seconds later as the Malian took out Joel Veltman.
Vieira made the sensible call of subbing Doucoure at the break, sending on Ebere Eze in his place.
Within a few minutes of the second half, there was a power cut which caused a four-minute delay as the technicians got the TVs up and running.
De Zerbi was then cautioned for making a theatrical booking gesture after Caicedo had been awarded a yellow card for a foul on Olise, as if to say, ‘How can you give one for that and not Doucoure’s challenge?’
Alexis Mac Allister threatened a second with a couple of chances but in the end March’s strike was enough against Vieira’s toothless team.

Since then eight bidders have progressed to the second stage, some with the intention of a full takeover and some interested in helping to finance an interested party.
The Telegraph report the Glazers want at least £5billion for an outright sale.
Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are two parties interested in a potential full takeover, and their representatives are holding meetings in Manchester this week.
Indeed, they are two of four meetings scheduled before Friday with at least one more to be held next week before the third stage of talks begin.

Director of football John Murtough is also said to be involved in the meetings.
However, the Qatari and Ineos bids reportedly fall short of the Glazers’ valuation of the club, sparking fears the sale could be extended or even collapse.
The report suggests two more parties are willing to buy Man Utd fully.
A number of US hedge funds – most notably Elliot Management – are interested in providing financing for an interested party.

Arsenal’s January transfer failure was blessing in disguise, says Ian Wright

ARSENAL legend Ian Wright has suggested that missing out on Mykhailo Mudryk in January could have been a blessing in disguise for his former club.Mikel Arteta’s side were heavily linked with the Ukrainian winger before losing out to rivals Chelsea in the January window.
Trossard has settled into life at Arsenal and has five assists in nine games.
Mudryk is yet to score for Chelsea in seven appearances following his January move.
The Stamford Bridge outfit signed the 22-year-old in a deal worth up to £88million.
The Gunners signed Brighton winger Leandro Trossard instead for £21m plus add-ons.
Trossard has adapted quickly to life in North London, scoring once and registering five assists in just nine games.
The Belgian international got a hat-trick of assists in Arsenal’s 3-0 win at Fulham last weekend.

Wright has been delighted with the Belgian’s impact and suggested Mudryk wouldn’t have made the same impression at The Emirates.
Speaking on his podcast Wrighty’s House he said: “I don’t care what anyone says, Mudryk, and we’ve seen up to this point, he wouldn’t have done what Trossard has done what Trossard has been doing up to this point.”
He added: ” Mudryk, for his own sake, I do feel sorry for him because I don’t know if there’s anyone in the history of football whose had to have a transfer of that amount of money with so much politicalness around him. It’s almost unfair.”
Mudryk has struggled in comparison to Trossard following an exciting debut cameo against Liverpool at Anfield.

First half goals from Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Odegaard earned a comfortable win for Arteta’s side.
The players were all smiles at full-time as they posed with the clock, with the hands pointing at ‘two’ and ‘eleven’.
But the Gunners boss revealed there was no significance behind the gesture, revealing it was a private joke.
He told ESPN: “It was something I related to a few days before on where we were as a team and club and what we have to stand for.

“It was something private in the dressing room just before the game and something that’s in the history of our club.
“We have to be really conscious of that and when we have that history and we use it in the right way, that’s a really powerful thing to have.
“The reality is that every game is so important, the margins are so small and we are now going to have to do something incredible until the end of the season to earn the right to be there.”
Some fans thought one of the clock’s hands pointed to 11 because that is the number of Premier League games remaining for Arsenal in their title run-in.
