But rather than see out his deal until 2024, the 102-cap Spaniard has opted to bow out at home to Almeria in LaLiga this Saturday.
Marca calculate the ex-Manchester United youngster has saved Barcelona around £44m in wages as they struggle with debts and Financial Fair Play.
Former team-mate Xavi said: “Pique is a player who still has a contract and who could have continued at the club, so his gesture shows spectacular greatness.
“We had a private conversation at the beginning of the summer.

“I had to explain my intentions to him and it was one of the most difficult moments I’ve had to do as a coach.
“We heard about Pique’s decision this week. Surely I have had an important weight in making this decision, but the truth is that I have to make decisions and in many situations someone else played over Pique.
“For me it is not a relief that he is leaving now. It is a personal decision for him, due to the circumstances and due to the conversation we had in the summer.”

But he said: “I’ve tried to be honest with Pique… the footballer always feels when you don’t play him, the coach is to be blamed.
“That’s why I say that sometimes the job of a coach is unpleasant because you have to make difficult decisions. The conversation we had is private.”
Pique won 30 trophies with his boyhood and hometown club Barca, including three Champions League successes and eight LaLiga crowns. More

Silva’s showdown with The Problem Child has been labelled as a last-ditch attempt for a final big payday, a notion the future UFC Hall of Famer has rubbished.
He said: “I don’t need the money anymore. People think money is important, but it’s not.
“Of course, I will make money from this fight because it’s my job.
“Don’t do something just for the money. Work because you have a passion.

“That’s what I’ve done and why I’ve been successful all my life.”
Silva’s desert dust-up with Paul – who is facing a whopping £92million lawsuit from Eddie Hearn – isn’t his first foray into the squared circle.
The Brazilian has amassed a 3-1 record, including a win over former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
But despite his decades of combat experience, Silva believes there’s more room for improvement when it comes to his boxing.

He said: “It’s different because you have seven different disciplines in MMA.
“But for boxing, I’m just training for boxing. I need to train more with my footwork, the position of my hands. But I’ve been training for boxing for many, many years. So it’s something I’m comfortable doing.
“Every single fight, you have different things you train for. Every fight is different. For this fight, I’m training to fight a boxer. The most important thing going into this fight is my experience.
“My experience is something that Jake doesn’t have. I love this challenge. That’s the secret to me. I go into this fight to prove my respect to the boxing community.”
Silva’s recent victory over Chavez Jr impressed Paul, although he’s confident of swatting The Spider on fight night.
While watching the fight, he said: “Knockout of the year incoming.

Watch Ederson pull off one of saves of season as he narrowly tips Mo Salah’s shot around post in Liverpool vs Man City

EDERSON foiled Mo Salah and fooled referee Anthony Taylor – with a contender for save of the season. The Manchester City keeper plunged full-length to divert Salah’s shot behind, only for a goal-kick to be awarded – before the Liverpool striker took revenge later with a brilliant winner.

Manchester City keeper Ederson conjured a miracle save to thwart goalbound Mo Salah but only a goal-kick was awardedCredit: AFP
And even though Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp was sent off for complaining about the officials, Ederson’s tip-round stirred up equal excitement on social media.
So quick was his movement, so slight his touch, that Taylor failed to spot it – and neglected to give a corner.
Salah had surged goalwards after first-time passing split City’s defence, but Ederson stood his ground and then flung himself to his right to fingertip the ball behind.
Armchair observers were stunned by the save and furious Salah’s shot was NOT recorded as an effort on target due to the ref awarding a goal-kick.

One fan posted: “Ederson makes an “incredible save” and then takes a goal kick.”
Another hit out: “It is inexplicably given as a goal kick. What??!!”
But some viewers noted that, no matter how outstanding Ederson’s diving save was, Salah could have rolled the ball across for Diogo Jota to slot home from 20 yards.
One tweeted: “GNev (commentator Gary Neville) completely ignoring the fact that if he squared it, it’s a definite goal.”

From the third round onwards on the way to a unanimous points win, Fury’s eye gushed blood with the ringside doctor even consulted as to whether it was safe for the Gypsy King to carry on.
But thanks to Capetillo’s work on the horror gash, Fury battled through to secure a hard-fought win – and then had to have 47 stitches.
The coronavirus lockdown saw Capetillo’s Las Vegas gym close and the Mexican admitted to having “empty pockets”.
But Fury stepped in to help the man who set him on the path to WBC glory by battering Deontay Wilder to win the belt.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Capetillo, who describes the cut as “the worst I’ve ever seen”, said: “He is still very grateful.
“When he knew we were locked down because of Covid-19 and my gym was closed, he texted me and said: ‘Is there anything I can do to help?’
“He is still taking care of me. He sent me money.
“I was supposed to be with Jessie Vargas in New York on March 14 (2020) but the fight was cancelled and I came home with empty pockets.

“He is a great man, so humble. He had the time to ask how I was doing with my family during this crisis.”
Capetillo went on to describe how once he “controlled the bleeding” against Wallin he told Fury that “everything will be good”.
And so it proved as the Wythenshawe-born fighter won comfortably on points, 116–112, 117–111, and 118–110.

Fury then went on to destroy Wilder in February that year to win the one heavyweight belt he never had before.
Her further cemented his dominance over the Bronze Bomber with a win in their trilogy fight.
Currently, Fury is in talks to sign an epic contract to fight Anthony Joshua – although the bout is yet to be confirmed. More

Tyson Fury will only make return for ‘a bucket load of money’ as Eddie Hearn shoots down ‘FREE’ Anthony Joshua fight

EDDIE HEARN insisted Tyson Fury will only return for “a bucket load of money” as he shot down a “FREE” fight with Anthony Joshua. Fury retired in April after knocking out Dillian Whyte at Wembley and claimed only £500MILLION could bring him back.

But he soon backtracked and announced he would fight AJ for nothing, so long as his British rival beat Oleksandr Usyk.
The contradictory statements were highlighted by Joshua’s promoter Hearn, who laughed off the thought of Fury fighting without pay.
He said on DAZN: “He’s a genius Tyson Fury because no one ever questions what he says.
“On the one hand, he said you’ve got to pay him 500 million to come out of retirement, and in the next sentence, he says he will fight AJ for free on non-pay-per-view.
