Man Utd poach top Crystal Palace scout Jamahl Jarrett as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ramps out transfer recruitment team

MANCHESTER UNITED are close to appointing Crystal Palace recruitment specialist Jamahl Jarrett to their scouting team. The 32-year-old is poised to become the lead scout for the South of England as the Red Devils continue their coaching and recruitment shake-up.

Jarrett has been with Palace for ten years, and is also the co-founder and director of football for Lambeth Tigers.
He set up that football club to encourage children into football and not into a life of crime and gang culture.
Kids from the Tigers have gone on to join the youth-set ups of the likes of Palace, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham, Fulham, Millwall and Leicester City.
The appointment of Jarrett is the latest move to revamp things behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
Last month United appointed John Murtough as their first Football Director.
And former player Darren Fletcher was given the new role of Technical Director.
But there was a notable name heading for the exit door too.
United legend Nicky Butt QUIT as head of first-team development for a ‘new challenge’ after coaching there nine years.

SunSport has exclusively revealed that Derby boss Wayne Rooney is interested in adding Butt to his management team at the Championship outfit.
But according to The Athletic, Butt and Murtough had ‘differing footballing views’ and there was ‘friction’ between the pair.
Murtough was essentially Butt’s line manager in the new coaching set up. The Athletic describes the pair as ‘like chalk and cheese’.
It is also alleged that Butt felt ‘overlooked’ for the technical director role that his former team-mate Darren Fletcher bagged.
Butt helped bring current first-teamers like Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Axel Tuanzebe, Dean Henderson and Mason Greenwood through United’s famous academy.

In recent years, Roy Keane, 49, has reinvented himself as a TV pundit on Sky Sports – championed for his sharp analysis, rapport with Micah Richards and wicked sense of humour.
He has now thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant Celtic manager’s job, and is one of the hot favourites for the role.
But, away from football, the Ireland legend lives a very private life.
    THERESA DOYLE
Last month Keane surprised us all when he set up an Instagram page, where he’s uploaded pictures of his family, including his grandchildren.
Still missing from it, though, is his wife of 20-years, Theresa Doyle.
The pair met in 1992, when the midfielder was playing for Forest under Brian Clough.
“I spotted a beautiful girl in a club in town. Her name was Theresa Doyle but she blanked me,” Keane once revealed of his encounter with the Nottingham-born beauty.
“She was in a steady relationship and didn’t seem at all impressed by Roy Keane, the great footballer. In fact, I think my reputation was as a downer for all kinds of reasons.
“From time to time we ran into each other around Nottingham. I knew some of her friends, who told me Theresa was a dentist’s assistant.

“Eventually, after her relationship broke up, she relented and we went out together. I was in love.”
They got married in a private ceremony at the Church of Our Lady Crowned in Mayfield, Cork, where Keane is from.
Keane rarely mentions his wife in public, but once opened up about their relationship in a revealing interview with the Sunday Times in the early 2000s.
“I don’t really mention her in public, but in fairness to her, she has been a rock in my life. Just brilliant. She reads me better than I read myself,” Keane said.
“I wouldn’t say Theresa likes every part of the package. She knows I haven’t got a halo over my head. Actually, that’s what she likes about me. She also knows I am not the nastiest person in the world.”
    FIVE CHILDREN
Keane and Theresa have five children together, Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna.
Even though the former footballer has tasted plenty of success on the football pitch, nothing comes close to spending time with his family.

In his autobiography, when writing about winning the Champions League in 1999, Keane said he “longed to go home to Theresa and the kids” and wasn’t interested in celebrating with his team-mates.
However, despite his wish to spend more time with them after hanging up his boots, he previously admitted that they wanted him to get back to work after just two months.
“My plan when I first stopped was, we’re going to go on some family trips, we’re going to be like the Waltons,” Keane joked.
“We’re all going to spend time together, go walk in the park and after a month or two they didn’t have the same plan as me so I think they were kind of missing me going to work.
“I got offered the job at Sunderland and I was away on a family holiday and my family were looking at me… not saying it directly but going we kind of enjoy your company but not too much of it so when the job came back up they were saying you should go for it.”

He retired in 2006, after one season in Scotland at Celtic where he played 10 times.
    IRISH FALLOUT
Keane’s career has been rocked by scandal over the years.
But nothing hurt more than missing the greatest football competition in the world in 2002.
Keane played 65 times for Ireland between 1991-2005, but his international career is unfortunately remembered for his fallout with Mick McCarthy before the 2002 World Cup.

After a confrontation with McCarthy at the team hotel, he flew home and was famously quizzed by reporters about his acrimonious exit while walking his dog near his home.
Without him, Ireland managed to reach the last-16 before they were beaten by Spain on penalties.
    AS A MANAGER
Now linked with Celtic, Keane has had previous experience managing a club – all with varied success.
His first job at Sunderland was actually a success in the light of day. He took over the Mackems in 2006 when they second bottom of the Championship.
In his first season, they managed to win the league and gain promotion. But he stood down from his post before Christmas – with Sunderland struggling in 18th position in the Premier League.

Then came a spell at Ipswich, where he failed in a promotion bid and was sacked in 2011.
Keane returned to the international fold as assistant manager to Martin O’Neill, and was a key member of the coaching set-up that saw Ireland qualify Euro 2016.
O’Neill and Keane left their jobs after a series of inconsistent results left their jobs hanging by a thread – and reunited briefly at Forest in 2019.

Chelsea star Reece and Man Utd’s Lauren James become first brother and sister to play for England and are ‘living dream’

It’s astounding that two talented footballers of the men’s and women’s game are even playing professionally, not to mention pulling on a Three Lions shirt and representing their country.
But the London-born pair are living the dream. Part of their success is due to their incredible father, Nigel.
A motorbike accident halted his promising career, after spells at Luton Town and Southampton.
Nigel found his true calling through mentoring youngsters and later set up Nigel James Elite Coaching programme.
It’s testament to him, his son and his daughter would eventually become pros.
    PARKLIFE
Reece, 21, and Lauren, 19, grew up in London with football an ongoing backdrop in their lives.
As well as a father with footballing aspirations, their elder brother Joshua was on the books of Fulham and Reading. Their mother Emma worked admirably for the NHS.
If the three siblings weren’t kicking a ball against a wall, they would be down the park honing their skills.
Often, their dad who would pass on his knowledge and put the three through training drills and exercises.
Lauren and Reece have always shared a tight bond together
The siblings grew up in London with football as their backdrop
Dad Nigel coached Reece, Lauren and their brother Joshua in the local park
“We grew up as a three,” Reece of Chelsea proudly told the Blues official website.
“Obviously, Josh learned from my dad and then it just passed its way down. I started playing because my brother played, and my sister played because I played.
“We all used to play every day together at the park and over time we all gradually got better. There was a field behind my house, with two pitches, and every day I’d be playing football, either in the field or in the street.”
Lauren, a striker for Manchester United, echoes the sentiment that the beautiful game dominated their lives.
“All I ever knew was football, football and football,” she told The Telegraph.
“My brothers got me into football. Whether it was when Josh was at Fulham or when Reece was at the Chelsea academy, I was there kicking the ball against the fence.
“I’ve always had a football and it has just taken me to where I am now.”
    PATHWAY TO SUCCESS
Reece was an early bloomer when it came to his footballing talent.
By the age of six he joined Chelsea’s impressive development academy, where he progressed through the ranks.

However, it took him some time to find his best position. He started off as a striker, moved into midfield and then had to learn the art of defending.
Once he cemented the right-back as his own, there was no stopping him. In the 2017-18 season, he appeared for England at U18, U19 and U20 level.
A loan at Wigan Athletic the following campaign saw Reece named as their Player of the Year.
Once he made his debut against Grimsby in the EFL Cup in 2019, scoring one and assisting two, he could no longer be ignored for a first team spot.
Lauren might be slightly younger than Reece, but her achievements are just as impressive.
At 13 she joined Arsenal, and because of her experience with playing with her brothers was encouraged to train with the boys’ team.
Two years later, the prolific forward made her first team debut for the Gunners women’s team – beating Reece to the punch there.
She created history in the process becoming the youngest player in Arsenal’s history male or female to make their bow for the club.
In 2017, she moved to the newly reformed Manchester United women’s team to take on a new challenge in a city she never knew.

But that didn’t deter the brave teen, who scored 14 goals in 18 league games as the Red Devils won promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking to the Women’s Super League.
    BATTLING RACISM TOGETHER
As is a sad indictment of our times, both Reece and Lauren have been targeted with online racist abuse.
They are united in their efforts to encourage social media companies to do more with their platforms in stopping racism.
“When we both get messages like that, we turn to each other and discuss it,” Reece said.
“I think everyone agrees and knows that what’s happening with social media and racism is wrong. Everyone says they want to change, but not many things are changing.”
    MUTUAL RESPECT
Although they share a competitive nature on the pitch, Reece and Lauren only have a mutual respect for each other’s achievements.
But Lauren knew she had to emulate her brother by following his footsteps into the England squad.
“We are not usually competitive,” she revealed.
“When he got his senior England call-up, it was like, “Right, he got his, I’ve got to get mine now. That’s probably the only time and I laugh about it now.”
Reece earned his first cap against Wales last October, while a month later Lauren received a senior national team call-up as part of a 29-player training camp at St George’s Park.
Despite their careers mirroring one another, Reece is adamant they can’t be compared.

    “I wouldn’t say there’s competition,” he said.
“You know, she is my sister. Our games are the same, our professions are the same, but it’s still different. I play men’s football when she plays women’s football, you can’t compare them.”
No. But you can applaud their success. They are, after all, living the dream.

Man Utd kid Lee Roche made his Champions League debut against Deportivo La Coruna in 2003, but now works as a builder

ON March 18, 2003 Lee Roche was thrown in at the deep end – handed his Champions League debut against Deportivo La Coruna in a 2-0 defeat. Some five years later, he was left on the football scrapheap and now works on building sites installing cavity wall insulation, and is a trained plumber.

Today, Roche is a builder and trained plumber

Now 40, Roche was given a free transfer two months after his bow in Europe’s premier club competition.
And when a football career petered out – after spells at Wrexham, Burnley and Droylsden, the youngster had to come up with a different plan in life with the help of the PFA.
    COMING TO AN END
At the age of 27, Roche was admittedly fed up of the game.
He’d bounced from a loan deal at Wrexham to Burnley, then back to Wrexham again.
Injuries began to take their toll, and the former England U21 star lost his hunger for playing.
“I was coming home and not wanting to even watch football on the TV, he told Planet Football.
After he was released by the Welsh club, he trained with Royal Antwerp and former United youth Warren Joyce.
But when a move failed to materialise, he signed for non-league Droylsden in 2007.
It was there he started to think about a life after the beautiful game.

With the help of the PFA, Roche now has his own cavity wall insulation business
The PFA supported the lost talent and helped him retrain in another profession.
Today, Roche is a qualified plumber and has his own cavity wall insulation business.
“I have had a few fellow workers on the building sites asking me about United and how have I ended up here,” he revealed.
“It can get pretty tiresome so I don’t go shouting about that I played for United. I do think young players today should be made to train as something, so they know about the real world.
“Most of them probably don’t have a plan to fall back on if they don’t make it as a professional.”
    BAPTISM OF FIRE
Roche made two starts for United, but it was always in scratch sides.
His debut came in 2001 in a Worthington Cup tie against Arsenal – a 4-0 thrashing in a team that featured mainly reserve players.

“Sylvain Wiltord scored a hat-trick and I remember Kanu being a massive handful – I couldn’t get over the size of his feet,” Roche joked.
“At one point, he flicked the ball over my head and volleyed it, but it went just over the bar, thankfully, otherwise it would have been one of those goals which would have been shown forever.
“There was no hairdryer from Sir Alex afterwards because he knew we had been up against it. I took what I could from that game and tried to learn from it.”
A year later, Roche came on as a sub against Newcastle United in front of a packed house at Old Trafford in a 5-3 win.
“It was unbelievable, coming on in front of 75,000 fans at Old Trafford,” he said.
“I did okay, but I remember Sir Alex talking to me afterwards because Alan Shearer had beaten me at the far post to win a header, so he told me to get up first and not let the forwards do that to me.”
    THE BIG LEAGUE
Roche’s third and final performance for United was in the Champions League.

He appeared against Deportivo, who at the time were LaLiga challengers to Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Playing in a back three with Laurent Blanc and John O’Shea, the Red Devils look disjointed in a different formation.
Roche, himself, was hauled off at half-time with the Premier League giants trailing 1-0 at the break.
“I was up against (Albert) Luque and thought I had done alright, but I wasn’t going to come off and start arguing with Sir Alex,” he said.
“Giggsy told me to keep my chin up and that I had not done anything wrong. Sir Alex didn’t tell me why I had been substituted, but I didn’t want to overthink it.”
    ‘NO REGRETS’
Despite how his football career turned out, Roche is thankful for his time at Manchester United.
Although he doesn’t have any regrets, there is one thing perhaps he might’ve done different.
“I don’t have any regrets,” Roche revealed.

“The only thing I would point out is that I was known at United for being really quiet, so perhaps I should have been more assertive and mingled more with the lads.
“I’d be straight off home after training to hang out with my own group of friends. I look back now at team-mates like John (O’Shea) and Darren Fletcher and think I should have been more like them and gone out and socialised.
“I think it would have gone down better with United.”

Man Utd wonderkid Teden Mengi is rapid defender, given new deal at Old Trafford, and has been starring at Derby on loan

THERE’S a buzz around Manchester United’s Carrington training ground, and that’s not just because the club look like they’re heading in the right direction.A steady crop of exciting youngsters are beginning to take centre stage under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as the Norwegian promised in his mandate when he first took the job.

And joining a stream of talent that includes the likes of Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams, and Tahith Chong is a centre half quicker than all of them.
Teden Mengi, 18, found himself training with the senior squad alongside United luminaries Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, who themselves made the leap from youth to first team last year.
Better still, he left an impression on Solskjaer by recording the fourth fastest running speed in the whole squad.
In January, he joined United legend Wayne Rooney at Derby County in a loan deal to gain much-needed game experience, and fans lauded his performance in a 0-0 draw against playoff hopefuls Barnsley.
And he has been handed a new three-year contract – with a bright future predicted.
    MANCHESTER-BORN
A late bloomer, Mengi, who has Angolan citizenship, only joined United in 2018.
But he quickly seized his opportunity in the U16’s, and was promoted to the U18 team – playing 21 times in the 2018-19 season.
Mengi formed an impressive partnership with Di’Shon Bernard, who made his debut against Astana last season in the Europa League.
He was rewarded with the captaincy for the U18’s last season and helped his team march to the semi-final of the FA Youth Cup, and has enjoyed run outs with the U23’s.

    ‘TOOK HIS CHANCE’
Eager to impress U23 boss Neil Wood, Mengi didn’t put a foot wrong when he was handed his opportunity to play at a higher level.
Wood is adamant he can follow recent graduate, and fellow defender, Williams into the first team.
“He came up to us quite early on in the season and, a bit like Brandon [Williams] in a sense, he came from the Under-18s and took his chance,” Wood told MEN.
“He played really well and he kept his place in the team.
“And when he dropped back down at the end of the (last) season to lead the Youth Cup team, he put in some excellent performances there.
“We’ll be looking to work with him next season and he’s one we want to ‘do a Brandon’ with, push him on and the goal is to try and get him pushed up into that first team if we can.”

    GREASE LIGHTNING
United are rumoured to be after a new centre-back this summer with Kalidou Koulibaly, Valladolid star Mohammed Salisu linked and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.
But they could do far wrong by promoting from within and giving Mengi his chance, given budgets will be slashed with the coronavirus pandemic affecting the club’s finances.
And they would have a quicker centre half in their ranks than first team stars Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.
In measurements taken of the squad’s individual workouts during football’s shutdown, Mengi is said to have clocked the fourth-fastest running speed at the entire club.
Only Jesse Lingard, Axel Tuanzebe and first-placed Daniel James reportedly recorded a quicker pace than the teenager.

Mengi has appeared once for United – coming on as an 84th-minute substitute for Timothy Fosu-Mensah in a UEFA Europa League match against LASK.
His attributes include his composure on the ball, a skill that every modern defender needs, as well as his strength.
While he won’t be putting on a United jersey again this season, we’ll certainly see more of him next campaign.

Former Man Utd star Febian Brandy set up the Skouted app, the LinkedIn of football, and helps talent get spotted

SKOUTED is the revolutionary tool that could help clubs inside and outside of the Premier League find the next big thing. The free app, co-created by ex Manchester United footballer Febian Brandy in 2019, is designed to put footballers in the shop window.
Skouted is a new app that will revolutionise how scouts work
    HOW IT WORKS
Players can build up a profile that includes video clips of them in action and scouts will be able to search the Skouted database featuring hundreds of players that can be filtered down to position, player style and even their location.
But it won’t be all professional… in fact, the Skouted’s founders hope they will be able to create a social media community for the football community.
Brandy created the app with Loughborough University student and rugby player Keita Orelaja, entrepreneur Raj Sharma and CTO Harjot Singh.
“At the moment there is a big gap between players and clubs,” Orelaja told SunSport.
“There’s a high number of talented players that can be missed by clubs and scouts due to time or geographical location.
“So that means a lot of players aren’t able to play at the level that their talent will allow them.
“With Skouted we hope to bridge that gap, where players can come on the platform, create a detailed profile of themselves and can upload highlights of their playing career.
“Our verified registered scouts, all the way from Premier League down to non-league, British universities and even American colleges will be able to search for talent through key filters.
“Location, position, playing style, etc. A drop down list of players that match their search criteria will show.”
With Skouted we hope to bridge that gap, where players can come on the platform, create a detailed profile of themselves and can upload highlights of their playing career.”Skouted co-founder, Keita Orelaja
    FEBIEN BRANDY’S VIEW
Brandy is adamant that this is what the game needs at this time, citing his own personal experience in the youth set up at the Red Devils.
“My time at Manchester United, I was there from the age of eight to about 21, so you can imagine how many players I saw come and go,” he said.
“For me, I was quite fortunate to be there for as long as I was.
“But I saw players there that might not have had the ability to play for Manchester United, but they could’ve gone to a club like a Bury, Blackburn or Oldham.
“They just didn’t have the connection then to reach those teams. But if they had Skouted, all their videos will be uploaded and all the teams from Premier League to non-league would be able to see that individual’s qualities.”
So far the interest in Skouted has reached fever pitch, with a large number of clubs confirming they will use the app.
    WHO WILL SKOUTED BENEFIT?
Orelaja said: “We’ve got a lot of different opportunities for players on various levels – Premier League clubs, Championship clubs and non-league.
“As you go lower down, you really start to see the value in it.
Ex Manchester United star Febian Brandy is a co-founder of SkoutedCredit: Getty Images – Getty
Hundreds of players will be at your fingertips on Skouted
Skouted are aiming to create a football community through their app
“League One, League Two clubs don’t necessarily have the same scouting budget that someone like Manchester City has.
“And scouts could be traveling 45 minutes to watch one game, you’re there for 90 minutes, then you’ve got to travel another 45 minutes to get back… that’s 3 hours to see one player.
“In that time, you could assess hundreds of players on Skouted, save them and track their progress on our app.
“It allows lower clubs more access to a lot more talent that otherwise they may not have been able to reach because of funding.”THERE WILL BE OTHER USES FOR SKOUTED TOO
But Skouted isn’t just for pros looking for new clubs. In fact, Orejala and Sharma believe it’ll be a hub for the football community as a whole.
“Skouted will be used as a tool for players, not just professionals, but anyone who wants to get scouted,” Orejala continued.
“And we’re also building a social community with a real social media aspect and feel.
“Finding a teammate, for example… all of us here have received a text message asking us if we’re free to play 5-a-side because a mate has dropped out at the last minute.
“One of the features of Skouted is to be able to put out a notification for a social player to play that night.
“It allows lower clubs more access to a lot more talent that otherwise they may not have been able to reach because of funding.”Keita Orelaja
“We really want to be a hub for social communication and interaction in football, but we also want to provide an avenue for players who are more serious to make it at a higher level.
Sharma added: “The social element is key for us, because some users might not necessarily need or want to be scouted.
“They could instead set up a profile to be liked or followed.
“It could be used for entertainment purposes, best skills or goals, etc.
“We want to make it a go-to place for everything football and we’re going to try and make a football community.”
Brandy concluded: “I want Skouted to be accepted into the football industry.
“I’m still an active footballer at the moment, but now I’m working with Skouted it’s hard to juggle the two.
“I see Skouted as my longterm project, but haven’t hung up my boots just yet!”
Skouted is available to download from the App Store and Google Play. You can also follow Skouted on Instagram.
