Dean Henderson to replace David de Gea in Man Utd goal for West Ham clash in FA Cup after weekend blunders

DEAN HENDERSON gets another opportunity in goal for Manchester United in the FA Cup tomorrow.
If he takes it, in the fifth-round clash with West Ham, the clamour for him to keep his place for the league game against West Brom at the weekend will be deafening.

You have to go down to Leeds United in 11th to find a team with a worst goals-against record than United in the Premier League.
Even Burnley’s is better and they are one place above the drop.
David de Gea has started in all bar two of those league games.
Of course you can point at the fallibility in front of him but there is no doubt he is now costing United points not earning them, as used to be the case.

The 3-3 draw against Everton was the latest example as he palmed out Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s cross to the feet of Abdoulaye Doucoure for the first and failed to commit himself for the last-gasp equaliser.
Solskjaer is very loyal to De Gea but that loyalty is now starting to come at a cost.
He clearly has trust in Henderson or he would not have insisted on him returning from his loan spell at Sheffield United.
His absence has clearly been a blow to the rock-bottom Blades who have let in only two fewer goals at this stage of the season than the 39 they conceded in the whole of the last campaign to finish ninth.

Henderson has played ten games for United this season, including the second-half of the 3-2 win at Southampton when he came on for the injured De Gea.
He has earned four clean sheets, five if you count that second-half at St. Mary’s when United came back from 2-0 down to win it.
Solskjaer said: “He’s played well when he’s got the chance. For me, he’s developed his game.
“I know he’s not played as many games as he would’ve done last season but you see every game when he plays and in training you see his improvement.
“He’s working hard on a couple of aspects that we’ve spoke about and I’ve been impressed with his attitude and work rate.”
But it’s games the 23-year-old wants not platitudes, as Solskjaer knows.

Mason Greenwood has been praised by the United managerCredit: AP:Associated Press
He said: “He’s not the most patient guy – he wants to play every game because he knows he will perform well, so long may it continue because he’s improved since he came here.”
Another player looking for a continued run of starts is Mason Greenwood, who has begun five of the last six games after a disappointing start to the season.
While he has only one league goal to his name this season and four in all competitions, Solskjaer saw signs against Everton that the 19-year-old striker is getting back to the form he showed in his breakthrough campaign last season.
Solskjaer said: “Mason was different class, the standout performer on the pitch, he just didn’t get the goal that his performance deserved.
“He’s improved and matured immensely. He’s working with some of the top forwards in the country, learning off them, and it’s exciting to see that he’s come over his blip and is playing really well.”
With the Premier League title starting to look like a distant dream now, the FA Cup takes on even greater significance for Solskjaer in his quest to get his first trophy as manager.
He guided United to three semi-finals last season but knows this new team needs silverware to take the next step.
He said: “That’s the ultimate challenge and test for a team – to go all the way.

“We’ve improved, we’ve had a plan in place and I think the team is getting better and better, last season we got to the semi-final, and it was disappointing to lose that one.
“You want to go all the way and lift a trophy. To win a final all the good teams have been beaten so that’s the next step for us in the development of this team.”
United are up against an in-form West Ham side under former Red Devils boss David Moyes, sat sixth in the Premier League and on a run of just one defeat in 11 in all competitions.
Solskjaer said: “They’ve improved a lot – David has got his team really well organised, as he always does and he’s got some very good players.”

Solskjaer insists Man Utd ‘should not be considered title contenders’ after throwing away win against Everton

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says his side ‘shouldn’t be considered title challengers’ after late heartbreak against Everton.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored with the last kick of the match as the Toffees left Old Trafford with a point after a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bemoaned throwing away two points at the death vs EvertonCredit: Getty Images – Getty

United were 2-0 and 3-2 up in the game, but ultimately threw away the chance of joining fierce rivals City at the top of the Premier League.
And speaking after the game, which leaves them two points behind their neighbours having played two games more, Solskjaer hinted the result might give some people a bit of a reality check.
The 47-year-old Norwegian told Sky Sports: “We should even be considered as title chasers, we have got better as a team and see where we end up.
“We need to stop conceding easy goals.

“Results create the mood, the last kick of the ball makes us go home really disappointed, we have lost two points on a long thump upfield which we should have defended.
“We played some good football in the second half but conceded three goals from three shots on target. When you do that it is disappointing.
“We reacted well after their two goals but then why was there four minutes added in, we had to get the ball in the corner and see it out. Poor goals to concede.
“I wouldn’t blame anyone on the goals but we know we could have done better as a team on all of them.”

Edinson Cavani had fired United ahead before a sublime 25-yard chipped effort from Bruno Fernandes saw the hosts firmly in control at the break.
But Everton looked rejuvenated in the second half, and strikes from Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez levelled the game up.
Scott McTominay powered home a 70th minute header before Calvert-Lewin did his thing at the end.
United were also dealt a blow in the first half when Paul Pogba went off injured.
Solskjaer will now be waiting on the medical report from what looked like a thigh injury.

Man Utd star Paul Pogba set for scan after suffering ‘muscle injury’ against Everton, confirms Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

PAUL POGBA is set for a scan after limping off injured in the first half of Manchester United’s game against Everton.
The French midfielder appeared to feel something go in his right thigh, and immediately signalled to the bench.

Pogba had just played a pass forward when he pulled up, and his night under the Old Trafford lights was cut short.
After the game, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed: “It looks like a muscle injury, so we’ve just got to check him up tomorrow and have a scan and get him treatment. Hopefully he’ll recover quickly.”
Pogba, 27, was replaced by Fred, with United 1-0 up thanks to Edinson Cavani’s header.
Bruno Fernandes showed his class with a stunning goal just seconds before half time but Pogba’s absence was felt immediately after the break as a quick-fire double from Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez then brought the Toffees.

A Scott McTominay header 20 minutes looked to have given Solskjaer’s side a much-needed victory.
But Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck in the final seconds of the match to earn Everton a 3-3 draw.
Pogba was restored to the starting line up for the visit of the Toffees after sitting out the 9-0 slaughtering of Southampton.
And he had made a solid start to the game before pulling up injured.

Pogba has featured 18 times for United in the Premier League this season.
    He has scored three times.
SunSport reported how United have held talks with a new ‘happy’ Pogba over his future at Old Trafford.
The Frenchman has 16 months left on his deal.
Pogba and his agent Mino Raiola have talked publicly in the past about his desire to leave for a new challenge.
But Solskjaer is now getting the best out of the player, giving the club some optimism that they have turned a corner and the 27-year-old midfielder could commit his future to them.

Man Utd ratings: Defensive mayhem from Maguire and De Gea cancels out McTominay header in mad draw

MANCHESTER UNITED fluffed their lines against Everton as a late Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal snagged a surprise 3-3 draw at Old Trafford.
The Toffees barely got going on Saturday night and yet, at 2-0 down and without a shot to their name after 40 minutes, pulled back level by the 52nd minute.

Manchester United were left stunned by Everton’s late equaliser on Saturday nightCredit: AFP

Scott McTominay popped up to head home Luke Shaw’s ball in – only for hesitant defending to allow Calvert-Lewin to slip in for a 94th-minute equaliser.
Here, SunSport’s Marc Mayo rates and slates the individual performances from a mad draw.
    David de Gea – 4
Didn’t face a shot for over half an hour but pulled out a poor parry to allow Abdoulaye Doucoure to make it 2-1.
Glued to the turf as Calvert-Lewin poached a point at the death.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5
Kept a good enough lid on the dangerous Lucas Digne and was reasonably decent in attack himself.
Struggled to hold United’s offside trap for balls over the top.
    Victor Lindelof – 4
Gave a glimpse of a silly error when caught in possession for Everton’s first attempt on goal. Nowhere to be seen as the visitors snatched a point.

Victor Lindelof was marking Dominic Calvert-Lewin ahead of the levellerCredit: Reuters

    Harry Maguire – 5
You know it’s worrying when the opposition set up their entire game plan to make use of your foibles.

Everton’s balls in behind finally caught out Maguire’s lack of pace for the first goal and he was busy waving his arm at the lino as Calvert-Lewin made it 3-3.
    Luke Shaw – 5
Embodied his team’s disparate performance with a perfectly strong attacking display – and awful defensive showing.
Almost scored with a 20-yard scorcher and set up McTominay’s goal, yet was caught flat-footed for the first reply and was far too casual for the second.
    Scott McTominay – 7
Probably the only United player who looked assured at both ends.
Did well to keep Everton in front of him in the first-half and scored what seemed to be a vital header for 3-2, although the keeper should have done better.

    Paul Pogba – 6
On track for a decent performance as the deep-lying set-up guy having sat out the Southampton drubbing – but was forced off injured after 38 minutes.
    Mason Greenwood – 6
Showed great energy and put together a number of good attacks down the right wing. Seems to be enjoying his football once again, which is great to see, but faded in the second-half.
    Bruno Fernandes – 7
Lacked incision for much of the game but there was no lack of inspiration for his cracking finish from 20 yards for 2-0.

Bruno Fernandes launched a stunning strike for United’s second of the nightCredit: AP:Associated Press
    Marcus Rashford – 7
Relatively quiet until he delivered a great cross for Cavani’s opener. Perhaps struggled to translate his dynamic runs into end product afterwards.
    Edinson Cavani – 8
Netted a poacher’s finish to maintain his scoring run versus Everton and even popped up with a number of defensive interventions. With Cavani, United finally have a proper spearhead for the attack.

    Substitutes
    Fred – 5
On for Pogba, 38 mins. Took over the James Rodriguez marking job and looked pretty clueless for the Colombian’s goal.
    Axel Tuanzebe – N/A
On for Greenwood, 90+2 mins. Gave away the free-kick that led to the late leveller.

Man Utd 3 Everton 3: Calvert-Lewin scores with last kick of the game to dent Red Devils’ title run in thriller

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN turned a night of tributes into one of tears as Everton snatched the most dramatic of draws.
Calvert-Lewin jabbed a last-second leveller four minutes into stoppage time, to wreck United’s hopes of making the 63rd Munich memorial into a matchwinning one.

The Toffees striker prodded past David De Gea just as Scott McTominay seemed sure to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer victory on his 100th game as a Premier League manager.
And how fitting that would have been for a home-grown hero to come up trumps on the evening they remembered Sir Matt Busby’s local stars so tragically lost this night in 1958.
McTominay’s moment came 20 minutes from the end of a game that United tossed away right at the end.
He rose among an Everton triumvirate of Mason Holgate, Calvert-Lewin and Ben Godfrey and back-headed Luke Shaw’s free-kick into the far corner.

Cue roars of relief on the United bench, roars of frustration on the other one . . . and raw emotion from a goalscorer who has become a bedrock of the big games for Ole.
And, of course, the oh-so-apt fact it was from the bonce of yet another boy who cut his teeth the youth ranks here.
Mind you, McTominay was far from the only local product to shine last night.
And the most memorable moment once again came from the right boot of Bruno Fernandes, whose thunderbolt for the 45th-minute second goal was a genuine jaw-dropper.

Home-grown Mason Greenwood put on a lively display that gave Lucas Digne dizzy spells.
One early darting and dancing run ended with a cross which was just too high for Edinson Cavani. An ominous warning of what lay ahead for Everton — and one they didn’t heed.
Twice this season Cavani had stuck one past them, so no great surprise, then, when he completed his long-range hat-trick last night with United’s first after 24 minutes.
Marcus Rashford had all the space he wanted to take a look  and take aim, before picking out Cavani.
The Uruguayan stepped beyond Michael Keane at the far post, and from six yards, keeper Robin Olsen did  not have a prayer.
Suddenly Everton were a different team. And not in a positive way either.
From standing toe to toe, they were second best just about everywhere. Clearances came straight back, while second balls fell to men in red.

James Rodriguez fired home to complete the comeback – for nowCredit: Reuters
So, too, did the second goal on the stroke of half-time and what an absolute stunner it was, too.
In all truth Fernandes was having one of his quieter performances to that point and most of United’s more creative moments had gone on around him.
He hardly sprang into life the second Aaron Wan-Bissaka rolled a short ball to him a yard outside the box, either.
Fernandes had a glance, and took on the shot almost after deciding there was no other more obvious option. He unleashed a blockbuster that flew past a stunned Olsen and into the top corner.
Even the goalscorer looked amazed, given the way he stood rooted in celebration . . . or maybe that was his 2021 version of the famous Eric Cantona pose.

Scott McTominay looked like he would be the matchwinner at Old TraffordCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd

It was a brilliant header from United’s in-form midfielderCredit: Reuters
When that one flew in, it looked game over. OK not in anything like the same manner as Wednesday’s 9-0 mauling of Southampton.
But surely then it was only going to be how many, not who wins. Football, bloody hell, eh, as a certain footballing knight watching from the directors box may have thought.
Actually Sir Alex Ferguson, like every other United fan, was probably cursing a heck of a lot more than that after three crazy second-half minutes which turned this game on its head.

Ancelotti has some words for his late hero Calvert-LewinCredit: Reuters

First De Gea flapped at Calvert-Lewin’s cross after the Toffees centre forward had shown up Harry Maguire for pace, or lack of it, and Abdoulaye Doucoure tapped in on 49 minutes.
Then, three minutes later James Rodriguez pulled down Doucoure’s nod back and drilled home.
No one was stopping McTominay from getting his head to Shaw’s delivery to put United back in front.
Surely this time it was enough. Surely this time they could mark the night in the manner they so desperately wanted. Calvert-Lewin clearly didn’t read the script.

Diallo, 18, played a starring role with a goal and THREE assists in the 6-4 win.
United confirmed the Ivorian teenager’s £37million move from Atalanta last month – which had been agreed in the summer.
And one particular piece of dazzling interplay left fans drooling at what they could expect to see in the senior side in years to come.
Diallo and Mejbri flicked the ball to each other multiple times on the right wing with none of the Rovers defenders able to get close to the gifted pair.

Diallo eventually drove into the box before the move broke down after he passed it on.
One fan said: “Why not just take this squad to the Europa league and let the seniors focus on the league?? These boys are good enough.”
Another added: “I have watched this like 270 times and I’m not stopping.”
A third jubilant supporter tweeted: “I’m saving the video. I’ll watch it every night before I sleep.”

Diallo gave fans a glimpse of why the Red Devils splashed the cash to recruit him at Leigh Sports Village.

New pro Shola Shoretire grabbed a hat-trick and promising forward Joe Hugill also found the net as well as Diallo’s partner-in-crime Mejbri on a superb night for United’s future stars.
Mejbri, 18, was signed by United for £9m from Monaco as a 17-year-old and is a classy attacking midfielder from France who many believe will have a big future at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer urges Man Utd to do Munich victims proud with rousing performance against Everton on anniversary of disaster

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has called on Manchester United to honour those who perished in the Munich air disaster with a fitting performance against Everton.
It is only the fourth time United have actually played on the anniversary of the tragedy that killed 23, including eight of the Busby Babes.

There will be a minute’s silence before the Old Trafford clash with both captains laying wreaths in memory of those who died and both sides will wear black armbands.
United boss Solskjaer said: “It’s only the fourth time the game is played on the actual anniversary.
“And it’s important we put on a fitting performance and hopefully we can honour them with the result.”
Solskjaer says new players are always educated about the disaster and the importance of the anniversary each year.

He said: “It’s such an important part of the history of our club and we have spoken to the players who come into the club, who’ve not been here, and are part of this anniversary.
“It’s a big day for everyone and has always been an emotional one.
“Hopefully we can put a team out that shows the Manchester United spirit.”
They certainly did just that in the midweek with a thumping record equalling 9-0 Premier League win over Southampton.

It left them on the heels of neighbours Manchester City, who lead the table, and put them back on track after dropping five points with a home defeat to Sheffield United and goalless draw at Arsenal.
In the Premier League, United are top of the away form table with eight wins and three draws – but only fifth on home form having lost five times.
Now Solskjaer wants to see his side build Old Trafford back into a fortress.
He said: “Consistency of course is vital.
“We’ve done really well away from home and bounced back after the Sheffield United defeat.
“So we are ready to kick on and get some momentum. If we get the consistency and morale and confidence up, who knows?
“It’s about doing the right things and creating good habits every day on the training pitch.”
The game will be Solskjaer’s 100th as a Premier League manager, including his spell at Cardiff, and he admits he’s a very different coach now to the one that oversaw the Bluebirds’ relegation from in 2014.

He said: “I’m a bit older and wiser hopefully, and a lot more grey up top, but I’ve really enjoyed it.
“From when I was with Cardiff it is a different ball game. The players get better and better, fitter and fitter, it is more tactical.
“I’ve enjoyed, not every game because you don’t enjoy defeats, but testing yourself against good coaches and managers.”

Harry Maguire reveals he was fined by Man Utd team-mate Nemanja Matic for using phone – despite being on fines committee

HARRY MAGUIRE has revealed how he was hit in the pocket by Manchester United’s own disciplinarian – Nemanja Matic.

And fines chief Matic, 32, decided Maguire was guilty of using his phone in a no go area at the club’s Carrington HQ which led to a pay-out, something the centre-back still disputes.
Maguire told the official Utd Podcast: “I’ve been fined once which is still debatable. It’s crazy but I let Nemanja do it. I took the hit and put the money in the pot.
“When you meet in the gym before training for pre-activation you are not allowed your phone. We did pre-activation, I didn’t have my phone.
“But then you go outside to put your boots on and you aren’t allowed to go on your phone in that period. I had my phone and carried it out with me.

“I wasn’t on my phone because straight after training I was going to put my trainers back on and go up for a massage instead of coming all the way back.
“I could have gone straight to a massage and Nemanja fined me for that. He’s strict with everyone so I’m happy. I can set the standard.”
Maguire and Matic keep it simple when it comes to the fining system for their team-mates.
And by now, you would think United players would be used to getting penalties!

The England defender, 27, added: “We have lates for training, meetings and travel. They are the three big ones.
“We mainly have one set fine but double on match day. I just like to keep it simple. If you have too many fines it ends up too messy.
“We have a good fining list this year. I don’t know who is top of it. They have been good. Everyone has been on time, everyone comes early.”
