Man Utd and Wolves boost as Barcelona reject Douglas Costa transfer after being offered Juventus star in swap deal

MANCHESTER UNITED and Wolves have been handed a boost in their bid to bring in Douglas Costa.
The two Premier League clubs have been linked with a swoop this transfer window for the 30-year-old Juventus winger.

It was reported yesterday in Italy that Juve wanted to offer him as part of a deal to bring Ousmane Dembele to Serie A.
But according to Mundo Deportivo, Barca are not interested in bringing Costa to the Nou Camp.
It is believed Juve tried to include the same player when they signed Arthur from the Spanish giants.

But seemingly the lesson has not been learned.
SunSport previously revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent was working on a £37million transfer to bring Costa to Wolves.
Jorge Mendes has done plenty of business with the Premier League side over recent seasons to draw the likes of Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves, Rui Patricio and record-signing Fabio Silva to the West Midlands.
Wolves may be keen to bring in a new winger after selling Diogo Jota to Liverpool in a transfer that will ultimately cost £45million.

Costa started just six Serie A games last season and was brought on as a late substitute in Pirlo’s first game – a 3-0 win over Sampdoria.

Dembele meanwhile, another winger on the shortlist at Old Trafford, has struggled with injuries at Barcelona.
The £135.5million signing, who could only muster nine appearances last season, had been a loan target for Liverpool.

Victor Lindelof facing Man Utd axe for Brighton clash after Crystal Palace horror show with Eric Bailly fit to play

VICTOR LINDELOF is facing the axe against Brighton after Manchester United’s calamitous opening to the new Premier League season.
The centre-back was all over the place as Crystal Palace took the back four to pieces winning 3-1.

Now with Eric Bailly fit again Solskjaer is looking to form a regular partnership between him and Harry Maguire.
They played together in the 3-0 midweek away win to Luton in the EFL Cup.
Solskjaer said: “I think last season proved to us how we can defend at our best but last week wasn’t fantastic, we conceded sloppy goals.
“Eric is fit again, which is a big, big plus and we are looking forward to seeing him develop and play more games.

“We’ve been waiting him to be fit and play more regularly.”
Before adding: “I think our defensive record from last season with Eric and Harry showed how good a partnership they were.”
Bailly made only 11 appearances last season due to injury but five of those resulted in clean sheets.
While fans have been crying out for a new centre-half it is clear Solskjaer has faith in what Bailly can do.

Solskjaer is hopeful that the team itself is more up to speed for the lunchtime kick off away to Brighton.
His side had only trained together for a week after their late ending to last season with the Europa League and looked well off the pace against a Palace side who had a full pre-season.
Solskjaer said: “We’re a week further down the line, it’s been a good week, some players have been training well and the work has been good.
“We played well against Luton, we’re further down the line like other teams, we need to be further down the line because last week was disappointing.”

Man Utd to launch last-gasp Jadon Sancho transfer raid with ‘final offer of £90m’ and are ‘confident’ of landing winger

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly set to make a final £90million move for Jadon Sancho.
The Borussia Dortmund winger has been linked with a move to Old Trafford all summer.

    1

And now, according to The Mirror, United supremo Ed Woodward will come in with a final ‘take-it-or-leave-it offer’.
It is believed the Premier League club will offer £75m up front, with another £15m to be paid in add ons later on.
After months of wrangling, United will not budge from this latest, structured deal but are said to be ‘confident’ of finally landing their man.
This is despite Dortmund’s head of football Sebastian Kehl saying earlier in the week that the 20-year-old would STAY in Germany.

An initial deadline of August 10 set by the Bundesliga club passed without incident.
He told Ruhr Nachrichten: “He [Jadon Sancho] is our player, and he will stay.
“It was an important statement from the club because we have a certain responsibility. Without Jadon this team is weaker.”
Sancho played 78 minutes of Dortmund’s 3-0 win against Borussia Monchengladbach in their Bundesliga opener.

He scored on his first appearance of the season in the German Cup in a 5-0 thrashing of Duisberg.
But to fund the move for Sancho, as well as the rumoured interest in Porto left-back Alex Telles, could mean SIX players are on their way out of the club.
Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Diogo Dalot, Andreas Pereira, Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo are all up for the chop.
However, one man who the club are happy to keep around is Jesse Lingard.
The midfielder, 27, is reportedly NOT on the transfer list after playing in the 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Luton.
SunSport revealed this week that Lingard could even be offered a one-year contract extension to ensure he maintains value in the market.

Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes addresses penalty criticism and reveals how tough it is to score from 12 yards

MANCHESTER UNITED star Bruno Fernandes has hit back at rival criticism about his penalty-scoring exploits – claiming it’s very tough to score from 12 yards.
Since joining United in January, Fernandes has scored 12 times, with EIGHT of those coming from 12 yards.

    2

After the restart, Man Utd were awarded spot-kick after spot-kick – with Fernandes ever reliable in the league, FA Cup and Europa League.
But despite rivals fans poking fun of ‘Penandes’ and the ‘inevitable’ United penalty each game, Fernandes has hit back – insisting it’s not as easy as everyone thinks.
Seemingly more and more penalties are being awarded in the Premier League – with a hatful already seen through just two matchdays in 2020-21.
When asked about the spate of spot-kicks, Fernandes told the Man Utd website: “We can’t talk a lot about penalties because everybody will say: ‘Bruno only scores penalties’.

“If the others score them, it’s no problem. They just score a penalty, you know?
“Penalties are part of the game. You need to score. You have the chance but you need to score.
“I know everyone is talking about them like it’s easy, but you can lose a final with a penalty.
“Man Utd won the Champions League in Moscow with penalties [in 2008].

    2

“For most people, it’s easy when you’re in front of the TV. ‘It is easy – just look at the goalkeeper jump to his left so why don’t you shoot to the right?’.
“Yeah, I can shoot to the right but, on my mind, was the left and the goalkeeper saved it. It can happen.
“But the most important thing, for me, is to keep scoring.”
And Fernandes insisted he isn’t obsessed with hogging penalty-taking duties – with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba all more than capable.

Liverpool boast the most valuable squad in world football
The Portuguese star continued: “It doesn’t matter if I take penalties.
“Rashy was the guy who took the penalties so I tell him, ‘When you feel confident, if you want to take the penalty, for me, it is not a problem.’ I will not fight.
“I feel confident with penalties and I want to take them but, if someone comes to me to ask to take a penalty, I will not fight every time, just to take a penalty.
“In that moment, I can be tired or not prepared to take a penalty and I can say easily, ‘You take it’.
“I trust in my team-mates – Rashy, Anthony and also Paul, they have a lot of qualities and can take it.
“We have really good penalty-takers. The most important thing is scoring for Manchester United.
“It doesn’t matter if it is Bruno or someone else.”

The incredible home spans four floors and is set across 8,000 sq ft – and while £3m is no small fee, you certainly get a whole lot of bang for your buck.
The gorgeous exterior is just the start, with the inside boasting all the bells and whistles you could ever dream of.
As well as a lower-ground fully kitted-out gym, there’s an indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and even a home cinema.
On top of that, there’s even a games room, which features a poker table and a pool table.

There are even two kitchens to go with four main reception areas – including a stylish open plan kitchen-diner which leads directly to the garden.
All in all, there are six double bedrooms to go with five bathrooms spread across the upper two floors.
Outside the home is protected by a secure, gated entrance.
There’s an attached garage to go with the built-in “parking courtyard” and a large, fully landscaped garden.

It’s clearly a highly affluent area too, with other properties in the vicinity selling for £2.35m and £1.7m this year alone.
The cherry on top for any prospective buyer is that there is no chain to hold up the deal.
Fletcher, 36, spent 20 years at United all in all, including eight years in the youth ranks.
The 80-cap Scotland international featured 342 times for the Red Devils, scoring 24 goals and helping to win FIVE Premier League titles, the FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League.
Fletcher lived at the property with wife Hayley Grice and twin sons Jack and Tyler – both 13-years-old.

Premier League’s worst spenders revealed with Man Utd recording £867m losses in last decade but rivals City are worse

MANCHESTER UNITED have lost nearly £1BILLION through transfer dealings in the last decade – but they are still not as bad as rivals City.
The Red Devils have a net expenditure of £814.8million after signing some massive stars since the start of the 2011-12 season.

Manchester clubs have the worst net spend in the past decade by some distance

Paul Pogba, for example, cost a then-world-record £89m in the summer of 2016.
A further SEVEN players, including Angel Di Maria, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, have all cost over £50m, with the latter a whopping £85m.
Yet United have been unable to recoup much – or any – of those fees when selling.
It means the club’s net spend for the past ten years sits at an ugly £814.8million, according to a study by Paddy Power.

In the past ten years, United have won the title just ONCE, way back in 2012-13 – in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season.
Since then, they have been mired in mediocrity and never looked like serious challengers despite their monster transfer dealings.
However, there is one club in England who are even worse… rivals Manchester City.
The Etihad giants have spent and spent and spent since being taken over in 2008.

Liverpool boast the most valuable squad in world football

And since 2011-12 alone, their NET expenditure is a staggering £867.3m.
Man City have signed some superb players down the years, including Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling.
But there have also been some duds, with Pep Guardiola developing something of a reputation for spending big on defensive flops, such as John Stones and Danilo.
In return, City’s largest fee received in that span is just the £45m Bayern Munich paid to sign Leroy Sane.
Incredibly, the Manchester clubs have a net spend of around DOUBLE that of third-placed Chelsea.
In the past ten years, the Blues’ net spend sits at £410.3m, as they have balanced big-money arrivals with expensive sales, such as ones involving Eden Hazard to Real Madrid (£88m rising to £150m).
Arsenal come in fourth despite their lack of league success in recent seasons with a net spend of £380.3m.

Reigning champions Liverpool come in fifth on £335.6m after signing superstars such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino ALL for around £30m apiece – roughly the cost of one Pogba.
The Reds’ dealings have been so strong in fact, their £335.6m spent in the past ten years has helped build a squad now worth £987.6m – the most-valuable group of players in the world.
Everton’s recent big-spending puts them in sixth on £271.6m – just above Aston Villa (£263.4m) and West Ham (£256.8m).
Brighton (£187.4m) and Newcastle (£181.8m) are surprise entries in ninth and tenth respectively.
Tottenham are way down in 15th on just £135.8m, behind the likes of Fulham, Stoke and Wolves.
In fact, all current Premier League clubs have made a net loss.
You have to drop to the Championship to find a team who have made a net profit in the last ten years, with Brentford pocketing a staggering £81.2m.

Man Utd chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge brought £89m Pogba to Red Devils and negotiated De Gea’s contract extension

ED WOODWARD might be the person you associate most with transfers at Manchester United, but behind-the-scenes there’s another man controlling the purse strings at Old Trafford.
Matt Judge, who carries the official title of head of corporate development, prefers to be low-key when it comes to doing business for the Premier League giants.

    7

    7

That’s why you’ve probably never heard of him.
But ever since 2016, there’s been a change of the guard when its come to taking on the role of chief negotiator.
That’s where Judge has come in, most notably brokering deals for the likes of £89m world record signing Paul Pogba, transfer flop Alexis Sanchez, and David De Gea’s contract extension.
And with United desperately looking to add talent to their squad after a disastrous 3-1 opening day defeat to Crystal Palace before the October 5 transfer deadline, you can bet Judge will be a busy man.

    AN ANONYMOUS EXISTENCE
While chief executive Woodward is happy to push himself front and centre as the representative of the United boardroom, Judge sits in the backdrop quietly going about his affairs.
A search on Google reveals very little about the man, and there’s an air of mystery about the tall, balding fella as he deals with the world’s biggest football names.
One solitary picture pops up, hanging behind Woodward wearing a United suit and tie, accompanying his boss to training at Carrington.
Also, he doesn’t have a picture on his LinkedIn picture.

Instead, in the bio, it says: ‘Managing Manchester United’s equity and debt capital structure – three equity offerings incl the IPO, totalling over $450m; and three debt refinancings ($1bn+) – debt private placement, term-loan and RCF. Also player negotiations (transfers and playing contracts).’

    7

On his LinkedIn page Judge doesn’t have a picture
Like Woodward, Judge studied at Bristol University, where he finished a Masters degree in economics.
And with 13 years of experience in investment banking before his United tenure, his area of expertise seems ideal for the role.
    SEVEN YEARS AND COUNTING
Judge has been Woodward’s right-hand man since the departure of former chief executive David Gill in 2013.
He began assisting in transfer negotiations in 2016, the summer United spent a whopping £89m on L’enfant terrible Paul Pogba.
Since then, he has overseen moves involving the likes of Alexis Sanchez (£30m), Romelu Lukaku (£75m), Nemanja Matic (£40m), Viktor Lindelof (£30m), Bruno Fernandes (£49.5m) and Donny van de Beek (£35m) with United splashing £592.4m in that time.
The cat that let the secret out the bag that Judge was so heavily involved in United’s deals was Jose Mourinho.
“I know my people is doing everything they can,” the ‘Special One’ said once before a game at Burnley hoping for fresh new blood to help his ailing squad.
“The owners with the green light, Mr Woodward working hard with Matt Judge and everybody is giving everything they can and I think they are going to be successful.”
Judge and Woodward are tasked with overseeing 52 scouts dotted around the world.
Their information is channelled through scouting chiefs Marcel Bout and Mick Court.

    7

Judge has been working at Man Utd since 2012, stepping up to transfer negotiator in 2016Credit: Club Pachuca Tuzos
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also identifies prospective signings, before United draw up a list of targets.
Last year, a source told the Manchester Evening News that it’s Judge who negotiates contracts and transfer fees.
“Jim Lawlor and Mick Court were the scouts here under Ferguson and they are still delegated to identify targets,” a United insider told the MEN.
“They will then hold discussions with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mike Phelan.
“Matt Judge is the one doing deals and Ed signs them off, but he also signs off non-football aspects as well.”
    CONTRACTS AND DEALS
Judge hasn’t been afraid to exercise United’s wealth when it has come to signing the world’s best footballers, and securing the futures of stars they already own.

    7

Judge would have drafted up the £375k-per-week contract signed by David De GeaCredit: Getty – Contributor
Not only did Alexis Sanchez command a £30m transfer fee from Arsenal plus Henrikh Mkhitaryan, he was also given a £450,000-per-week contract – making him the most expensive player in Premier League history.
Judge also tied up David De Gea to a new contract after lengthy negotiations that’ll keep him at the club till 2023. That didn’t come cheap, mind, with the contract reportedly worth around £117m.
But don’t be fooled into thinking Judge isn’t canny when it comes to dealing with United’s coffers.
In 2019, he haggled with Crystal Palace’s Steve Parish over a deal for Wan-Bissaka, initially low-balling the Eagles chairman with a £40m offer.

    7

And he did the same with Daniel James and Harry Maguire, before finally getting his man.
Any deals that are made by United in this transfer window will have the fingers of Judge presiding all over them.
Should the Red Devils dip into their hefty budget, Judge will be heavily responsible. But you’ll be unlikely to hear his name mentioned.
