Paul Scholes fears ‘timid’ De Gea has lost his presence and ‘almost jumped out the way’ for Everton equaliser vs Man Utd

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Scholes believes David de Gea looks ‘timid’ amid concerns of his form.
The Spanish goalkeeper had a poor game during the 3-3 draw with Everton and was at fault for the first and third goals.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Scholes said: “I think the goalkeeper could be becoming a bit of a problem.
“I think that belief is going a little bit. He looks a little bit timid, he looks like he’s losing his presence.”
Everton secured a point at Old Trafford thanks to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s last-minute equaliser.
Harry Maguire played the England striker onside, but de Gea reacted slowly to the danger and Scholes was not impressed.

The 46-year-old said: “He didn’t really get in the face of Calvert-Lewin, he almost jumped out the way and made it a little bit easier for him than it should have been.
“He possibly wouldn’t have saved it anyway but at least try, at least show a bit of braveness about it.”

De Gea didn’t cover himself in glory for the opening goal either, palming a soft cross from Calvert-Lewin straight to Abdoulaye Doucoure.

The Spain international has kept eight clean sheets this season but has also made four errors leading to goals.
He’s been defended by United boss Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer, although there’s no guarantee he’ll remain his first choice with the impressive Dean Henderson waiting in the wings.
The 23-year-old kept 13 clean sheets during his loan spell at Sheffield United last season.

And Scholes isn’t the only United legend to question de Gea’s recent performances.
Gary Neville also believes the Spain international was at fault for Everton’s equaliser.
Henderson is likely to feature in United’s next game as they face West Ham in the FA Cup on Tuesday.

Man Utd have spent hundreds of millions of pounds to challenge for the Premier League title – not to settle for top four

IF OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER is lucky, Joel and Avram Glazer might have missed the fact that Manchester United have just chucked in the title towel.
United’s absent owners are probably too busy celebrating the success of their Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Sunday’s Super Bowl to really notice what is happening on the other side of the Atlantic.

Manchester United dropped two points against Everton on Saturday as the Toffees snatched a late drawCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd

But news of Solskjaer conceding the Premier League crown with more than a third of the season still to play will not remain under the radar for long.
Particularly when it is United’s bitter rivals who have been handed a free ride to their third league championship in four years.
United were just two points behind Manchester City when Solskjaer declared on Saturday evening: “We’re not talking about winning titles. That’s more what the media are saying.
“We shouldn’t even be considered as title-chasers.”

He didn’t explain why a team with Britain’s most-expensive player in £89million Paul Pogba, a £200m back four — and the world’s highest-paid keeper should not be expected to challenge for the top honours.
But Ole is clearly getting his excuses in early for another year of Old Trafford underachievement.
So maybe it isn’t surprising that United’s players are so quick to settle for being the best of the rest, when the manager’s aspirations are so low.
The problem for United is that Bruno Fernandes — their one truly world-class player — clearly isn’t interested in second place.

Bruno Fernandes bemoaned his side for switching off against Everton at the weekendCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
He thought that he was signing for the biggest club in the world when he joined them from Sporting Lisbon in January last year.
But he is now rapidly realising that United’s ambitions don’t match his own — and is already starting to show his frustration.
Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Everton summed United up to a tee, as all their excellent attacking play was undone by shambolic defending.
Two of the visitors’ goals were directly down to goalkeeper David De Gea, who has been anything but world-class since signing that mammoth £375,000-a-week contract 18 months ago.
When Solskjaer was a United player, Peter Schmeichel wouldn’t think twice about taking out anyone who came within five yards of his goal.
But De Gea is a rather timid soul, who appears to be far more concerned about injuring himself than any  potential damage he might inflict on an opponent.
Not that all United’s shortcomings can be laid at the keeper’s door.
The central-defensive pairing of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are slow and cumbersome and the midfield nearly always contains at least one journeyman.

Question marks still remain over the centre-back pairing of Harry Maguire and Victor LindelofCredit: PA:Press Association
They have scored more (49) than any other team in the Premier League and conceded more (30) than anyone else in the top half.
So it doesn’t exactly take a genius to work out where they have been going wrong.
Even with all their flaws, United are still on course to finish with 75 points, which would be a reasonable improvement on last season’s 66.
The trouble is, it still won’t be enough to get them anywhere close to the noisy neighbours.
It was only three years ago that United finished runners-up to City by a distant 19 points and within six months Jose Mourinho had been sacked.
They have not mounted a serious title challenge  since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
And that is unlikely to change any time soon with the cautious Solskjaer in charge.

    REFS CAN’T KICK TV HABIT
Mike Dean already made history as the first ref to issue 3,000 yellow cards — and first to send off 100 Premier League players.
Now he has set another landmark by becoming the first to have two red cards rescinded in a week.
VAR  was meant to cut out obvious refereeing errors but even with the help of TV technology, Dean still gets it wrong.
In fact, the moment he is urged to review an incident, you just know he is itching to reach for a card.
Although no one in their right mind can claim that justifies the subsequent death threats from moron fans.
As Mark Halsey pointed out in yesterday’s paper, the standard of refereeing in the top flight has rarely been lower.
Aston Villa boss Dean Smith was fined and banned for a sarcastic comment to Jon Moss, and six days later the Premier League changed the interpretation of the offside law which had prompted the outburst.

Mike Dean has received death threats from fans after he controversially sent off Tomas Soucek on SaturdayCredit: Reuters
Nuno Espirito Santo still won’t back down from calling for Lee Mason to be banned from officiating  Wolves games.
And on Sunday Kevin Friend couldn’t award a blatant penalty, until VAR told him Chelsea’s Timo Werner had been wiped out by keeper Aaron Ramsdale.
I know that Covid has turned us into a nation of armchair supporters — but no one told us that the refs would also become telly addicts.

Man Utd willing to wait until end of season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer contract extension talks with just 16 months left

MANCHESTER UNITED will wait until the end of the season before opening contract talks with boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Red Devils are second in the Premier League, five points behind leaders Manchester City.

But club chiefs want to keep fighting for the title and qualify for the Champions League before Solskjaer is offered a new deal.
The Norwegian has just 16 months left and SunSport understands United could hand him another two-year deal.
They are willing to give Solskjaer, 47, an increase in wages, taking his annual salary to around £6million before bonuses.
But his team have been inconsistent, including a shock recent home loss to Sheffield United.

And on top of their Champions League group stage exit, concerns have been raised.
Solskjaer is set to field a strong side in the FA Cup fifth round clash with West Ham on Tuesday night.
David De Gea is set to be dropped to the bench, with back-up goalkeeper Dean Henderson getting another chance.
The United boss said: “Dean has played well when he’s got the chance. He’s developed his game.

“He’s working hard on a couple of aspects that we’ve spoken about and I’ve been impressed.
“He wants to play every game because he knows he will perform well.”
United legend Rio Ferdinand believes that despite the club sitting second in the table, they are out of the title race following their draw against Everton.
The former centre-back said: “You can’t defend it. At the end of the day Man Utd were sitting pretty at the top of the league.
“We didn’t come into this season expecting to be title challengers. We were too far behind Liverpool (last season). You can’t expect to have a turnaround that big to win the league, it’s impossible.
“But I’m like all the other fans. You see the league table, you look at the results, you get excited. When you put yourself in that position, Man Utd have to strike. You’re there now and there’s an opportunity.
“When there’s an opportunity you’ve got to go. The problem is we’ve let this opportunity slip through our hands. You can see Man City with their experience, they’ve smelt blood, they’ve put their heads down, they’ve gone.

“But United have stuttered, we’ve got the choke going, haven’t got it quite working properly. We have choked, it’s simple as that.
“I’d put us out of the title challenge unless we go on a run and we change our habits and our lack of consistency.
“But I haven’t seen enough to suggest we can go on a ten, 15-game winning streak. We’re tripping ourselves up all the time. It’s top four, we’ll finish second or third.”

Solskjaer insists Man Utd ‘should not be considered title contenders’ after throwing away win against Everton

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says his side ‘shouldn’t be considered title challengers’ after late heartbreak against Everton.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored with the last kick of the match as the Toffees left Old Trafford with a point after a thrilling 3-3 draw.

United were 2-0 and 3-2 up in the game, but ultimately threw away the chance of joining fierce rivals City at the top of the Premier League.
And speaking after the game, which leaves them two points behind their neighbours having played two games more, Solskjaer hinted the result might give some people a bit of a reality check.
The 47-year-old Norwegian told Sky Sports: “We should even be considered as title chasers, we have got better as a team and see where we end up.
“We need to stop conceding easy goals.

“Results create the mood, the last kick of the ball makes us go home really disappointed, we have lost two points on a long thump upfield which we should have defended.
“We played some good football in the second half but conceded three goals from three shots on target. When you do that it is disappointing.
“We reacted well after their two goals but then why was there four minutes added in, we had to get the ball in the corner and see it out. Poor goals to concede.
“I wouldn’t blame anyone on the goals but we know we could have done better as a team on all of them.”

Pogba had just played a pass forward when he pulled up, and his night under the Old Trafford lights was cut short.
After the game, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed: “It looks like a muscle injury, so we’ve just got to check him up tomorrow and have a scan and get him treatment. Hopefully he’ll recover quickly.”
Pogba, 27, was replaced by Fred, with United 1-0 up thanks to Edinson Cavani’s header.
Bruno Fernandes showed his class with a stunning goal just seconds before half time but Pogba’s absence was felt immediately after the break as a quick-fire double from Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez then brought the Toffees.

A Scott McTominay header 20 minutes looked to have given Solskjaer’s side a much-needed victory.
But Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck in the final seconds of the match to earn Everton a 3-3 draw.
Pogba was restored to the starting line up for the visit of the Toffees after sitting out the 9-0 slaughtering of Southampton.
And he had made a solid start to the game before pulling up injured.

Man Utd 3 Everton 3: Calvert-Lewin scores with last kick of the game to dent Red Devils’ title run in thriller

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN turned a night of tributes into one of tears as Everton snatched the most dramatic of draws.
Calvert-Lewin jabbed a last-second leveller four minutes into stoppage time, to wreck United’s hopes of making the 63rd Munich memorial into a matchwinning one.

The Toffees striker prodded past David De Gea just as Scott McTominay seemed sure to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer victory on his 100th game as a Premier League manager.
And how fitting that would have been for a home-grown hero to come up trumps on the evening they remembered Sir Matt Busby’s local stars so tragically lost this night in 1958.
McTominay’s moment came 20 minutes from the end of a game that United tossed away right at the end.
He rose among an Everton triumvirate of Mason Holgate, Calvert-Lewin and Ben Godfrey and back-headed Luke Shaw’s free-kick into the far corner.

Cue roars of relief on the United bench, roars of frustration on the other one . . . and raw emotion from a goalscorer who has become a bedrock of the big games for Ole.
And, of course, the oh-so-apt fact it was from the bonce of yet another boy who cut his teeth the youth ranks here.
Mind you, McTominay was far from the only local product to shine last night.
And the most memorable moment once again came from the right boot of Bruno Fernandes, whose thunderbolt for the 45th-minute second goal was a genuine jaw-dropper.

Home-grown Mason Greenwood put on a lively display that gave Lucas Digne dizzy spells.
One early darting and dancing run ended with a cross which was just too high for Edinson Cavani. An ominous warning of what lay ahead for Everton — and one they didn’t heed.
Twice this season Cavani had stuck one past them, so no great surprise, then, when he completed his long-range hat-trick last night with United’s first after 24 minutes.
Marcus Rashford had all the space he wanted to take a look  and take aim, before picking out Cavani.
The Uruguayan stepped beyond Michael Keane at the far post, and from six yards, keeper Robin Olsen did  not have a prayer.
Suddenly Everton were a different team. And not in a positive way either.
From standing toe to toe, they were second best just about everywhere. Clearances came straight back, while second balls fell to men in red.

James Rodriguez fired home to complete the comeback – for nowCredit: Reuters
So, too, did the second goal on the stroke of half-time and what an absolute stunner it was, too.
In all truth Fernandes was having one of his quieter performances to that point and most of United’s more creative moments had gone on around him.
He hardly sprang into life the second Aaron Wan-Bissaka rolled a short ball to him a yard outside the box, either.
Fernandes had a glance, and took on the shot almost after deciding there was no other more obvious option. He unleashed a blockbuster that flew past a stunned Olsen and into the top corner.
Even the goalscorer looked amazed, given the way he stood rooted in celebration . . . or maybe that was his 2021 version of the famous Eric Cantona pose.

Scott McTominay looked like he would be the matchwinner at Old TraffordCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd

It was a brilliant header from United’s in-form midfielderCredit: Reuters
When that one flew in, it looked game over. OK not in anything like the same manner as Wednesday’s 9-0 mauling of Southampton.
But surely then it was only going to be how many, not who wins. Football, bloody hell, eh, as a certain footballing knight watching from the directors box may have thought.
Actually Sir Alex Ferguson, like every other United fan, was probably cursing a heck of a lot more than that after three crazy second-half minutes which turned this game on its head.

Ancelotti has some words for his late hero Calvert-LewinCredit: Reuters

First De Gea flapped at Calvert-Lewin’s cross after the Toffees centre forward had shown up Harry Maguire for pace, or lack of it, and Abdoulaye Doucoure tapped in on 49 minutes.
Then, three minutes later James Rodriguez pulled down Doucoure’s nod back and drilled home.
No one was stopping McTominay from getting his head to Shaw’s delivery to put United back in front.
Surely this time it was enough. Surely this time they could mark the night in the manner they so desperately wanted. Calvert-Lewin clearly didn’t read the script.

PATRICE EVRA has revealed Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson tipped him and Ryan Giggs to become ‘great managers’ one day.

Evra returned to Man Utd after his playing days ended in 2019 to act as a trainee coach.
And he has now revealed Ferguson – who won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns among the highlights of his managerial career tipped him for greatness nearly a decade ago.
Evra said: “You know, Sir Alex Ferguson said before he retired two players would be great managers – he said Ryan Giggs, and myself.

“I am doing my coach badges. It doesn’t mean I want to be a manager straight away, I just want to have them.

“You need to be humble, you need to start from zero.

“Patrice Evra as a football player, yeah, people put me [up] there.

“But as a manager I am zero, so I’m learning step by step – we’ll see in the future.”
While Evra is in no hurry to become a manager, Giggs took over from Louis van Gaal for four matches as interim manager in the 2013-14 season.
The Welshman won two and lost one of his four games in charge and didn’t return to management until 2018.
That year, Giggs took over as Wales manager and has won exactly half of his 24 matches in charge, helping them to qualify for this summer’s delayed European Championship.

Fears ex-Man Utd ace Marcos Rojo is ALREADY injured at Boca Juniors with scans over calf strain on FIRST day of training

MANCHESTER United outcast Marcos Rojo has become the butt of the jokes after an injury scare on his first day of training with new club Boca Juniors.
The Argentine’s Old Trafford career was plagued by a string of injuries.

And dad-of-three Rojo, 30, suffered a muscle problem less than 48 hours after signing for new club Boca.
Local reports said he was thought to have suffered a calf strain.
But club medics are due to report back later today on whether their new signing will need fresh tests.
The left-back is now being called Marcos Roto – which translates to Broken Marcos in English – by online jokers.

One meme doing the rounds in Argentina pictured him on crutches as his new moniker started to go viral.
A Boca fan, comparing him to recently-retired midfielder Fernando Gago who suffered several serious injuries during his career, said: “Marcos is the new Gago.
“Even the wind’s going to injure him.”

Rojo’s injury history with United began with a shoulder knock in November 2014 which kept him out of action for more than three weeks.

He suffered a cruciate ligament rupture three years later.
The Argentine made 122 appearance for the Red Devils and scored twice.
But he sealed his move to Boca Juniors after being told to seek his future elsewhere following a six-month loan in the second half of last season with his first club Estudiantes.
He last played for Man Utd in November 2019.
Rojo took to Instagram to mark the end of his United stint and send a fond farewell to the club’s supporters.
He said: “I want to take this opportunity to thank everybody at Manchester United who have helped me in the last six years.”
Before his new destination was confirmed, he was pictured showing off his six-pack following a gruelling gym session in his home city of La Plata an hour’s drive south of Buenos Aires.
Personal trainer Carlos Castro gave the game away before an official announcement by Rojo or his new club.
Castro posted the photo online, captioned: “Marcos Rojo is happy, improving day by day and about to begin training with Boca.
“As his trainer I’m impressed at the physical capacity he has, his recovery and that extra temperament typical of a great high-performance athlete.”
