      While Neville claimed he never wanted to quit Old Trafford, travelling to the US for Inter Miami’s first-ever home game – with ex-team-mate David Beckham the team owner – opened his eyes to what he missed out on as a player.
      Nev made the incredible revelations during a chat with Geoff Shreeves on Sky Sports’ Off Script podcast in April 2020.
      When asked by Shreeves if any other club came knocking for him during his playing days, Neville replied: “None that I’ve ever been made aware and none that I’ve known of.
      “I imagine that Sir Alex in his post-Manchester United career or in his interviews when I left the club would have said that someone would have come in for me or something like that.
      “It would have come out. So no, I’m unaware of any interest that’s ever been shown in me.”

      Neville went on to say that, even if another team had made a move for him, he wouldn’t have accepted.
      The ex-England defender said: “Never for one second did I ever take the blinkers off.
      “I could never understand, for instance just before David Beckham left I knew a months before that there was probably something brewing.
      “I couldn’t get my head around it at the time – with me being so Manchester United – how any player that was at the club would ever think to want to leave.
      “I just couldn’t compute it at all. For myself it never once entered my head.
      “My contract negotiations, the longest was probably three meetings, when Peter Kenyon was the CEO.
      “They were normally done inside one or two meetings. They were always long contracts.”
      ANY REGRETS?
      But that’s not to say Neville thinks he was necessarily right to be a one-club man.
      His trip to the US in 2020 to watch Beckham’s MLS side, Inter Miami, play their first home game made Neville realise what he may have missed out on.
      Nev continued: “I remember thinking that what I thought in my mid-20s, when David left, I couldn’t understand it.
      “But then when I saw the furore around his first game in Miami.

      Nev told Sky Sports’ Off Script podcast: “The 2-2 draw with Real Madrid where we almost won it late on was an incredible night.
      “Rafa Benitez was Madrid manager and that was his last game before he got sacked.
      “What I remember most about that game was our tactic of leaving the grass really long.
      “We didn’t water the pitch so the ball wouldn’t travel as quick in the hope of slowing down Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
      “It was like a farmer’s field.
      “Cristiano came over to me before the game and said ‘it’s a disgrace, cut the pitch’ – I said ‘absolutely no chance’.
      “There was no way he was dribbling that night.”

      The Manchester United manager go on to become a father-figure to the Portuguese superstar.
      He played a  key role in helping Ronaldo return to the club that made him nearly 20 years later, in 2021.
      And now Sir Alex, 89,  is being be called in to plead with CR7 to stay at the club after one turbulent season.Ronaldo has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid and Sporting Lisbon, after reportedly growing disillusioned at the club.
      Until today, he skipped training – but has now reported to Carrington to talk about his future along with his agent Jorge Mendes.
      Joining the discussion will be Ferguson, who will ultimately do his best to persuade his dear friend to stick with the Premier League giants.
      It’s a ploy United use last summer, when it seemed nailed on that the all-time leading international goalscorer would sign for United’s arch-rivals Manchester City.

      “A lot of people played their part (in bringing Ronaldo back) and I contributed knowing that really Cristiano wanted to come here and that was important,” he told Viaplay before the ex-Real Madrid star made his return to Manchester United.
      Ronaldo, himself, acknowledged the manager’s contribution. “PS — Sir Alex, this one is for you…” he wrote in a social media post celebrating his move from Juventus.
      Now, the fiery Scot has said Ronaldo deserves a sixth Ballon d’Or title, after his goalscoring exploits for club and country.
      Through the years, Fergie has been credited with making him the player he is today.
      Sparing him the infamous hairdryer treatment, Fergie filled Ronaldo’s head with confidence – giving him the freedom that allowed him to become a five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
      The “Boss”, as Ronaldo affectionately calls him, was even there for his protege’s most famous moment for his country – winning Euro 2016 – giving him a hug from the stands as he collected his winners’ medal.
      Their father/son relationship has blossomed through the years, so much so it was recently revealed that Ronaldo was set for a sensational return to Old Trafford until Fergie’s retirement in 2013 halted a deal.

      FAN BOY
      After Sir Alex retired, he enjoyed going to live events – from the Oscars to various European finals.
      At Euro 2016, Fergie was in the stands to watch Portugal defeat France 1-0 after extra-time.
      As the Portuguese players walked down the steps after receiving their medals, a proud Ferguson embraced Ronaldo and gave him a huge hug.
      Then, a year later he was a special guest at the 2017 Champions League final, in which Ronaldo won man of the match and scored twice in a 4-1 rout of Juventus.
      Of course, it was Fergie that give him his award that night.

      FAMILY COMES FIRST
      Back in 2005, as Ronaldo was beginning to establish himself at Old Trafford, his father Jose Dinis Aveiro fell ill in hospital after years of alcohol abuse.
      Immediately, Fergie ordered him to take compassionate leave – even though it meant his star player would miss key games during the season.
      “When my daddy was sick in London, and he was in hospital very bad in a coma,” Ronaldo revealed Sir Alex Ferguson: Secrets of Success’ in 2015.
      “I had a conversation with him [Ferguson] and I said: ‘Boss, I don’t feel good.’
      “We are in a key moment in the Champions League, and I said I don’t feel good and I wanna see my dad. He said: ‘Cristiano – you wanna go one day, two days, one week? You can go. I’m going to miss you here because you are important, but your daddy is the [priority].’
      “When he told me that, I feel like this guy is unbelievable. He is the father of football for me.”

      RED HERRING
      Fergie knew Ronaldo’s dream was to play for Real Madrid, and he wasn’t going to stop him from joining the La Liga giants.
      That said, he did try to pull a fast one when it was reported that Los Blancos were deep in talks with CR7.
      “You don’t think we’d get into a contract with that mob, do you?,” Sir Alex said back in 2008.
      “Jesus Christ. I wouldn’t sell them a virus. So that’s a no — there is no agreement between the clubs.”
      Six months later, Ronaldo moved to Spain – with Fergie in agreement all along.

      A FITTING TRIBUTE
      In 2012, at the unveiling of a statue of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, Ronaldo made an appearance by video link to pay tribute to his former boss.
      He began by apologising for not being there in person because of his hectic schedule.
      “I think you 100 per cent deserve it for what we did with you,” Ronaldo continued in the clip.
      He even joked, “I hope to see you soon, because I need to practice my English, not my Scottish!”

      SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR
      In 2013, Sir Alex Ferguson was the special recipient of the BBC Sports Personality Diamond Award for the show’s 60th edition.
      Again, Ronaldo took to video link to heap praise on Sir Alex.
      “You were like a football father to me,” Cristiano said.
      “You deserve this award because you are a fantastic manager, a fantastic person and the number one.”

      FILM STAR
      In 2015, Cristiano Ronaldo’s amazing life made it to the big screen.
      He opened himself up to the world in his documentary ‘Ronaldo’ – which Fergie wasn’t going to miss for the world.
      The Scot stood side-by-side with Ronaldo on the red carpet for its premiere in London.

      When Sir Alex suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2018, Ronaldo and the whole footballing world were praying that he would pull through.
      Taking to Instagram, Ron shared an image of them together with the caption: “My thoughts and prayers are with you, my dear friend. Be strong, Boss!”
      Ferguson made a miraculous recovery and the pair met up when Juventus played Manchester United at Old Trafford.

      TEAR-JERKER
      In 2020, Ronaldo won the Portuguese Player of the Year award for a record 10th time.
      It was Fergie’s time to record a moving video message for his former student.
      “Congratulations on a great achievement and a wonderful night you’re going to have in Portugal,” Ferguson said in the clip.
      “I’m really sorry I can’t be with you, but I look back and see you as a young lad at 17 years of age who came to Manchester United, how you have progressed as a human being and a fantastic sportsman.

      Christian Eriksen makes Man Utd transfer U-turn after ‘snubbing club due to promise to Tottenham chief Daniel Levy’

      CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN has made a Manchester United U-turn after agreeing to join Erik ten Hag’s side on a free transfer.The Daily Mail say the creative midfielder made a promise to Tottenham owner Daniel Levy in 2017 that he would not join a London club out of respect for Spurs.

      And Eriksen, now 30, apparently extended his promise to all English clubs when United’s interest came out.
      Former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was hoping to secure an £80million deal for the playmaker but failed to land his man.
      Eriksen handed in a transfer request in 2019 after outlining his desire for a new challenge.
      That sparked plenty of interest with both Real and Atletico Madrid joining Juventus in the hunt.
      But the Spurs ace eventually joined Inter Milan for £17m in 2020 as his contract began to run down.
      After initially struggling, Eriksen found his form under Antonio Conte and helped Inter win their first Serie A title since 2010.

      The Dutch tactician is now in the Old Trafford hot-seat and is expected to be handed a £200million war chest to improve the fortunes of the Red Devils – although he is still waiting for his first signing.
      The quiet thinker had a 13-year playing career in Holland, before he revived the glory days at Ajax with a vibrant young team.
      In 2019, with a side that featured homegrown talents like Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Donny van de Beek and Hakim Ziyech, he reached a Champions League semi-final.
      Ten Hag, a keen golfer with a high-pitched voice, worked wonders given Ajax had not even competed in the knockout stages since 2005-06.
      Having already surpassed par, Ten Hag is becoming a Master. That’s why he was United’s hierarchy’s first choice.

      On the wall of his modest office at the club’s De Toekomst training ground hang photos of Johan Cruyff, Rinus Michels and Louis van Gaal.
      In an era when Ajax are surrounded by financially beefed up opponents, he has ensured the club have stayed competitive. This season, they were narrowly beaten by Benfica over two legs to exit the Champions League in the Round of 16 stage.
      So how has the former centre-back from a rural town in Twente transformed their fortunes?
      Ten Hag’s education in coaching goes some way to explain.
      In 2013, having spent his entire career in Holland, he moved abroad to work with the master of management.
      At Bayern Munich, Ten Hag cut his coaching teeth with the reserves while watching closely as Pep Guardiola revolutionised the German giants’ style.

      And his approach to training shows Ten Hag is a disciple of Guardiola, such is the obsession with detail.
      He has a particular focus on the character of a player.
      Ten Hag will note down how each individual responds to minor errors, losing the ball or committing a foul, and works out the mentality of his team to suit their opponent.
      Before being appointed at Ajax in 2017, these skills helped him guide Utrecht into the Europa League.
      DEVELOPING YOUTH
      Ten Hag suited Ajax due to his ability to nurture young talent into stars.
      Frenkie de Jong joined Barcelona in a deal worth £65million in 2019. Matthijs de Ligt joined Juventus for the same fee – boosting the club’s coffers.
      Ten Hag played a key role in the development of players like Memphis Depay, at PSV, and Marko Arnautovic, at FC Twente.
      He transformed Depay from a central midfielder to a wide position, with the coach’s focus constantly on attacking and attractive football.
      Yet, Ten Hag is also able to identify what his team needs.
      Among his youthful stars, are seasoned veterans including former Manchester United man Daley Blind and ex-Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic.
      Both were brought in 2018 by Ten Hag to redress the team’s inexperience.
      The Dutchman has spoken of his lofty ambitions to manage a bigger club.
      And with Ajax now firmly established back as one of Europe’s big guns under Ten Hag, felt his work at the club was done.
      Now, the challenge of the Premier League awaits. Can he succeed where other Dutch coaches have failed? Time will tell.

      But centre-back Maguire, 29,  who came on as sub in Tuesday’s defeat, claims the Three Lions ARE still heading in the right direction.
      Maguire said: “Gareth is the most successful England manager since Sir Alf Ramsey in 1966. We all can’t wait to work with him and the backroom team again at the World Cup.
      “His managerial record is as good as anyone currently out there in international football.
