Man Utd and Chelsea to be handed extended break next summer and start Prem season late after European qualification

MANCHESTER UNITED and Chelsea will receive an extended break before the start of the next Premier League season.
Both the Red Devils and the Blues secured Champions League football next season on the Premier League’s final day.

They could be rewarded with an extended lay-off thanks to new top-flight proposals.
Sky Sports suggest the Premier League are likely to give all clubs currently involved in European competitions a guaranteed 30 days off.
This would come into force from the day after their last European fixture and is designed to give players a chance to recover.
League runners-up Man City and Wolves are also set to benefit from the time off.

The proposal will be discussed at the next Premier League AGM due to take place on August 6.
And should it be ratified it could see some of the league’s top sides start the new campaign up to TEN days late.
If Man City or Chelsea reach the Champions League final on Sunday August 23, then they would not be back in domestic action until Tuesday September 22.
A full ten days after the scheduled start of the 2020/21 season on September 12.

United and Wolves can both qualify for the Europa League showpiece on Friday August 21.
A place in the final would ensure they were not required to start the new Prem season until Sunday September 20.
Games would be delayed and held in midweek to account for the extra rest afforded to those still competing in Europe.

Chelsea to challenge Arsenal and Everton for transfer of ‘frustrated’ Man City outcast John Stones

CHELSEA could make a move for Manchester City defender John Stones this summer, according to reports.
After the signings of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and their pursuit of Kai Havertz, the Blues will turn their attention to strengthening their defence.

Stones’ name has been thrown into consideration by the Chelsea recruitment team and the England international is on the club’s list of defensive targets, according to website Football Insider.
The 26-year-old’s injury troubles have caused him to fall down the pecking order at the Etihad.
With Man City rumoured to be chasing a new centre-back this summer the ex-Everton man’s future looks to be in doubt.
The Toffees, Arsenal and Newcastle have all been linked with a move for Stones.

Stones has two years left to run on his current contract but City look unlikely to recoup the £47.5million they splashed on the defender in the summer of 2016.

    2

Stones has made just 16 Premier League appearances this season although has played a part in City’s last four games.
Chelsea are hopeful Stones can rediscover his best form to shore up a defence that has conceded 54 goals in the Premier League this season – more than any other side in the top half.
Ahead of their clash with Wolves this weekend, Blues boss Frank Lampard was positive he could turn his side’s defensive fortunes around.

“I think if you want to become a top coach you have to try to be very aware of all parts of the pitch,” he said.
“Some of the greatest coaches will come from different positions on the pitch, it’s more how aware you are of how you want your team to be collectively, and how you work with them individually.
“And we have a coaching staff as a group which we work very hard to try to be as defensively good as we can be, of course.
“There are lots of mitigating circumstances around that, we’ve conceded too many goals, I’m very aware of it.
“I feel like I know a lot of the reasons why, and we need to keep working to make sure that we get that down.”

Man City 2 Bournemouth 1: Watch David Silva’s stunning free-kick as he and in-form Gabriel Jesus leave Cherries on brink

THE resurrection of Jesus continued at the Etihad – to leave Bournemouth desperately looking for a miracle.
Gabriel Jesus ended a nine game goal drought when he scored against Newcastle last week – but now has three in his last three.

David Silva opened the scoring with a free-kick

Gabriel Jesus struck City’s second goal in a 2-1 win
It is just what Pep Guardiola needs from his Brazilian forward as he prepares for key matches against Arsenal and Real Madrid in the next three weeks.
Meanwhile Eddie Howe is getting to the stage where he needs snookers to extend the Cherries five year stay in the top flight.
They are going to require at least four points from their final two matches against Southampton and Everton to have any chance of survival.
And even that might not be enough.

Howe must have expected the worst on his long trip north – as no team have done more cherry-kicking than City.
They have won all nine Premier League meetings against Bournemouth.  The four matches here at the Etihad have seen them bang in 16 goals with just two in reply.
Yet Bournemouth deserved better here. They probably created more clear cut chances here than they have done in all the others put together – but only had a late David Brooks consolation to show for it.

City players celebrate going two-nil up
Just six minutes had gone when David Silva was fouled on the edge of the box by Jefferson Lerma and he clearly fancied the free-kick himself.

He scored a beauty against Newcastle here last week – yet he stepped up and topped it by curling home from 25 yards with that wand of a left foot.
The man they call “Merlin” managed to score just one free-kick in his first 305 league appearances for City – but now has two in a week.
Perhaps Manchester City have been missing a trick all this time….
Bournemouth had to stay in the game and they had a lucky escape when Fernandinho flashed a shot wide.
But from there they started to play their way back into the game as City slipped off the pace.
Pep Guardiola’s players looked as if they celebrated the Champions League reprieve they got from the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday a bit too heartily.

    5

Man City were awarded a penalty before VAR intervened
To be fair though they have nothing to play for in the league now with the runners-up spot already secure.
Bournemouth came so close to equalising as Dominic Solanke, the two goal hero against Leicester on Sunday, was carelessly clipped on the edge of the box by Nicolas Otamendi.
Junior Stanilas struck the free-kick which was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Ederson. The Brazilian had a bit of luck as it cannoned off the upright back onto his head but then dropped wide.
Another chance came as Dan Gosling got in down the right and squared for Solanke whose goalbound shot was deflected over by Otamendi with Ederson stranded.
From the resulting corner Philip Billing got up highest and planted a free header over the bar.
You can’t waste chances like that here and so it proved as City went up the other end and extended their lead.
This time Silva turned creator as he found Gabriel Jesus in the box. The forward weaved through a clutch of defenders before firing low past Aaron Ramsdale.

    5

David Brooks scored for the Cherries late on
It was heart-breaking for the Cherries – who did not deserve to be two down – but that’s what this City side can do to you.
As for Silva, that was the 93rd Premier League assist of his career – only Wayne Rooney, Dennis Bergkamp and Ryan Giggs have made more.
Jesus could have had a penalty soon afterwards as Lerma brought him now but surprisingly neither referee Lee Mason nor the VAR gave it.
Just before the hour, Stanislas turned again on the right and sent over a low cross that was turned in by King but the linesman flagged for offside. VAR showed he was right – but only just.
Ederson then pushed a cross straight to the feet of Gosling but Ilkay Gundogan got in the way to block his effort.
City thought they had another penalty when Silva rolled the ball to Jesus who looked to be chopped down by Steve Cook.
Ref Mason pointed to the spot but the VAR spotted the Cherries skipper got the slightest touch on the ball and over-ruled the decision.

Two subs combined as Callum Wilson crossed for David Brooks to tap home with a couple of minutes left of normal time.
Brooks became the first opposition player to score here since January – a nice moment for the wide man who spent 10 years coming through the ranks at City.
Wilson, twice, and Lerma both had chances too as City’s goal led a charmed life. It was a brave effort – but at this stage that is not enough for the Cherries.

Pep Guardiola not looking past Champions League ‘kings’ Real Madrid with Man City facing Ronaldo’s Juventus if they do

PEP GUARDIOLA says his Manchester City team cannot look past the ‘kings’ of the Champions League – after they were handed a tricky route to the final.
City could face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus in the last eight and then one of Pep’s old clubs Barcelona or Bayern Munich in the semis.

    1

Pep Guardiola is not looking past Champions League ‘kings’ Real Madrid
But first they must safely negotiate the second leg against Real Madrid to book their ticket to the finals in Portugal.
And Guardiola says it will come back to haunt them if they get to far ahead of themselves.
Asked about the prospect of playing Lyon or Juve in the quarter finals, the City chief said: “We have to play against Madrid.
“We play against Real Madrid, if we think about the next step the king of this competition will put us out.”

They will have to do that without Sergio Aguero – with Guardiola confirming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer will not be back from a knee injury by then.
He said: “I’ve told you many times he won’t be ready. Definitely.”
At least Uefa have confirmed the second leg of that last 16 tie against the 13 time winners will be at the Etihad – after reports that too would be played in Portugal.
Guardiola believes the right decision has been reached, saying: “Why should we play another place, the first leg in Madrid so second leg at home.

“It’s a normal situation, it’s not about advantages. It’s what it is. When it’s a knockout tie it’s normally one at home and one away.”

Before that City will hear whether they will be allowed to play in next season’s competition.
The result of their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against a two year ban handed down by UEFA should be known on Monday.
Pep said: “I’m so confident because I know and hear the arguments of the club.
“I think next season we will be there and after I will give my opinon and the club will give a statement.”
