Aaron Chalmers out to set up greatest weekend in Geordie history by beating Floyd Mayweather before Newcastle cup final

AARON CHALMERS is out to set up the greatest weekend in Geordie sporting history by beating Floyd Mayweather before Newcastle’s Wembley final. The Geordie Shore star welcomes Mayweather to a UK ring for the first time ever on Saturday, for an exhibition bout at London’s O2 Arena.

And the Toon Army are sure to make a weekend out of it with Eddie Howe’s Newcastle taking on Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final the following day.
Chalmers, 35, told SunSport: “I think the O2 will be full of the Toon Army.
“Everyone I’ve spoken to has said, ‘I’m going down on the Saturday, I’m going to get tickets.’
“I think the whole of Newcastle are going to make a weekend of it and the good thing with Newcastle fans is they always seem to back their own.

“When there’s boxing shows in Newcastle, it’s always a sellout, so hopefully we should have some Newcastle fans in the arena.”
Chalmers left MTV’s reality TV house in 2017 to pursue a fight career, transitioning to MMA.
And, after seven fights and five wins, he last year switched to boxing winning his professional debut in June.
So facing boxing royalty in Mayweather – in just his second bout – seemed as unlikely as Newcastle reaching their first cup final in over two decades.

Chalmers said: “What’s the chances of Floyd coming to the UK – first time ever – fighting a Geordie and Newcastle are in a cup final?
“That would have been about f*****g 500,000/1 on the bookies if you had put that on last year. It’s mad. It’s crazy.
“I feel like no matter what happens in the fight with me and Floyd, it will be a weekend to remember for the rest of my life, especially if Newcastle lift the cup.”
Newcastle’s last trip to Wembley for a final came in 1999’s FA Cup final, also against Sunday’s opponents.
So they have a chance to avenge their defeat to United in a rematch almost 24 years in the making.
Chalmers could have stayed in London to watch the game but the thought of the five hour journey home with the rest of the Toon Army was enough to put him off.
He joked: “I was offered, but I’m going to come home. I’m going to come home and have a little party at home with the kids and stuff.

“The match sounds good, but getting the train home afterwards on the Monday when there’s 50,000 Geordies trying to get home, I just couldn’t think of anything worse.”
Mayweather, 46 on Friday, officially retired in 2017 after beating ex-UFC champion Conor McGregor.
But he has returned for five exhibitions since against names from the MMA and social media world.
None have so far posed a threat to the famously elusive Mayweather, but Chalmers is ready to risk taking one to give one.
He said: “We’re in a boxing fight, I’m gonna get punched, I know that’s coming.
“The fact is if I didn’t want to get punched, I wouldn’t be in a boxing fight, so I know I’m going to get hit.
“I’m going to have to try and take that risk at some point to try and get my shots off, so it’s going to be a mad experience.

“I will be wanting to get my shots off, so the answer to that is yeah, I will be taking risks.
“Just hopefully not too many risks where I’m going to get clipped on the end of the chin.”

Inside Aaron Chalmers’ incredible rise from scaffolder, to Geordie Shore star-turned fighter who faces Floyd Mayweather

AARON CHALMERS would never have bet he would be a TV celebrity on the cusp of fighting boxing royalty when he was stuck on the oil rigs. Chalmers shot to fame on MTV’s hit reality series Geordie Shore but swapped the booze for boxing in recent years.

And he has landed himself a life-changing fight against American great Floyd Mayweather, on February 25 at the O2 Arena.
It marks an incredible rise for Chalmers, who at one point questioned his life prospects while scaffolding on the rig.
He told SunSport: “I used to stand there, obviously because it was on the water, I used to stand looking into the middle of the sea and think, ‘There’s got to be something better for me, there has to be something different.’
“I couldn’t see myself doing it for the rest of my life, on the oil rigs, but I never f*****g thought it would lead to this.
    READ MORE IN BOXING
“If someone had told me ten years ago, ‘Put a bet on that you’re going to fight Floyd Mayweather’ I would’ve been like, ‘No chance.’
“It hasn’t sunk in, I’m going to be honest with you. It still hasn’t sunk in that it’s happening.
“But it is happening and hopefully it’s going to do me wonders for my fight career.”
Chalmers left the construction trade at 26 to sign up for a life of partying in the Geordie Shore house, where he spent four years of his life.

And the same strive for something bigger in life is what has helped him land a meeting in the ring with boxing’s best in Mayweather.
Chalmers, 35, said: “There was something in us, I just knew I wasn’t going to be scaffolding for the rest of my life.
“I couldn’t tell you what it was going to be, but I just couldn’t see myself being on the oil rigs for the rest of my life.
“Which was a good job by the way, I was getting well paid, but there was just something in us, I never settle.
“I always want to push on and try and get something more and, even last year was a quiet year but I kept thinking, ‘I’m going to get something big, something big’s going to come.’
“Now here we are in possibly the biggest fight of my entire life. It doesn’t get much bigger than this.”

Chalmers packed his Geordie Shore bags to make a switch to professional fighting in 2017, debuting in MMA.
After three years, seven bouts and five wins, he made the move to boxing last July, beating Alexander Zeledon.
During the six-year period, Mayweather, 45, officially retired from the sport but has continued to box in exhibition bouts.
And he announced plans to debut in the UK but was left scrambling for an opponent when Muay Thai legend Liam Harrison, 37, pulled out injured.
Chalmers took it upon himself to reach out to a mutual contact he has within Mayweather’s team to put himself forward.
And after a few days of agonising negotiations and waiting, he was given the green light.

Chalmers said: “It’s surreal, seeing the promotion stuff online, seeing him and me in the same videos, it’s like, ‘This is actually happening.’
“It’s crazy. I’m not sleeping too bad, I think because I’m training so hard I don’t sleep too bad!
“But about an hour before bed, I’m thinking, ‘What the f***, I’m going to be fighting Floyd Mayweather, it’s crazy.”
Chalmers has been training since the new year, having accepted a fight on KSI’s Misfits promotion against an 80kg southpaw.
And after being afforded the deal of a lifetime, Chalmers hopes for more to come in a jam-packed 2023.
He said: “There’s been phone calls, Whatsapps, I feel after the Floyd fight things are going to explode on the boxing scene for me.
“There’s talks about fights for me in April, May, July, so everything’s opening up now and that’s before we’ve even had the fight.

“So if I can go in there and put on a good performance, who knows what’s going to come after it.”
Chalmers has overcome bouts of anxiety during his career, fighting off the harsh trolls online.
And now he finds himself just weeks away from an extraordinary exhibition with Mayweather, in just his second boxing bout.
He said: “The thing is, social media these days everyone’s got an opinion.
“So you can listen to everyone’s opinion or think, f*** them and do your own thing.
“I used to look and listen to the comments and think, ‘Maybe I’m doing the wrong thing.’ But if I listened to everyone’s comments I’d never leave the house.
    “Apparently I’m a s*** dad, I’m a s*** boxer, I’m a s*** f*****g drinker, everything online I’m s*** at.
“But I’ve had a f*****g successful ten-year career since leaving the scaffold so I can’t be that at things.

Aaron Chalmers wants to face Floyd Mayweather in 4oz gloves and calls out Tommy Fury as Geordie Shore star reveals talks

AARON CHALMERS wants his exhibition with Floyd Mayweather to be in 4oz gloves – and called out Tommy Fury. Chalmers has been announced as the next crossover boxing star to share the ring with the American legend.

Tommy Fury was once in talks to fight Aaron Chalmers
Mayweather, 45, is set to make his UK boxing debut on Febuary 25 at the O2 Arena in his sixth exhibition since officially retiring.
Meanwhile Chalmers, 35, won his professional boxing debut last year having crossed over from MMA, where he was 5-2.
The Geordie Shore star was initially brought over to boxing after entering talks to face Fury, 23, who starred on Love Island in 2019.
And although negotiations collapsed, he is out to settle the score after first sharing the ring with boxing royalty.

Chalmers said: “So I’m seeing a lot of s*** chatted online, right.
“But, at the end of the day, it’s me that’s fighting Floyd and I’ve got no hesitation of going in there and having a fight.
“That’s exactly what I’ve always done, every fight I’ve had. And once I take care of business with Floyd, then I’m going to smash Tommy Fury.
“Because he’s the reason that I got involved in boxing in the first place, was to fight him but it never materialised.”

Mayweather hung up his gloves as a pro in 2017 after beating ex-UFC champion Conor McGregor, 34.
But he has returned for five exhibitions since against stars of the MMA, social media and boxing world.
His most recent came in November against YouTuber Deji, 26, which he won in six rounds.
Although the bout in Dubai faced collapse just moments before after a row over the gloves, with Deji having to wear 10oz instead of the 14oz he signed for.
But Chalmers has insisted there will be no such problems with him and is even willing to go back to his roots with the smaller 4oz gloves used in MMA.
“So, like I say I’m not Deji, I’m not asking to fight in bigger gloves, I agreed to fight in 10s and if he really wants to, let’s do it in 4s.
“Me and Floyd in 4oz gloves, doesn’t get much better than that.”
