    That’s all from Molineux
And that’s all for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup for this season.
Julen Lopetegui’s side will feel hard done by given what happened in the first game at Anfield, but they simply didn’t show enough tonight to warrant a place in the fourth round.
Instead, it is cup holders Liverpool that progress, and it will offer them an immediate chance of redemption at the scene of their latest debacle.
The Reds will travel to Brighton in 12 days time to take on the side that dismantled them 3-0 in the Premier League at the weekend.
Jurgen Klopp said his team played some excellent football this evening – they’ll need all that and more when they return to the south coast to face the Seagulls in round four.
Thanks for joining us, and goodnight.
    Happy days return for Klopp
Liverpool pressed and fought like a Jurgen Klopp team of old, and afterwards the German mastermind admitted that it felt just like the old days.
I enjoyed that a lot. It is a pretty rare feeling, and it seems ages ago that we had that feeling when winning and playing well. We had to fight hard tonight. We were super passionate in our defending and we played some outstanding football. I had a few man of the matches tonight.Jurgen KloppBBC

    Elliott salutes Liverpool faithful
Matchwinner Harvey Elliott has praised Liverpool fans for sticking by the team during their poor run of form, and hopes that tonight’s win can be the much-needed lift to better times ahead.
It was a good turnaround. The last few results haven’t gone our way, but tonight is a stepping stone in the right direction. This is the perfect way to go into the next game and we’ll be full of confidence. I want to say a big thanks to the fans for sticking by us. We have the best fans in the world.Harvey ElliottBBC

    Match stats from Molineux
It was a night that failed to live up to the entertainment of the first at Anfield, and the pre-match build-up in the BBC studio.
Liverpool got the job done, but ultimately conceded more attempts and more possession to Wolves while only four of the game’s 18 shots were on target.

Full time – Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
The FA Cup holders are into the fourth round after seeing off a late Wolves onslaught of sorts.
The tie was settled by Harvey Elliott’s early thumper as a much-changed Liverpool outfit served up a gritty performance following their shambolic showing at Brighton on Saturday.
However, Reds fans shouldn’t get too excited; tonight’s victory means they have to travel back to the south coast to face the Seagulls in the fourth round.

    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
90+4. For some inexplicable reason, Wolves opt to play the corner shot, resulting in Podence getting a pass all wrong.
The home support are not impressed.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
90+3. A Phillips’ clearance goes only as far as Podence, who sees his return shot deflected away for another corner.
Wolves 0-1 Liverpool – Gomez yellow card
90+2. Joe Gomez becomes the second Liverpool player to see yellow for a cynical block on Daniel Podence during a Wolves attack.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
90+1. Into the five minutes of stoppage time, and centre-back Collins has gone up as another Wolves striker.
Meanwhile, Nunes gets his head on a cross but it’s straight at the grateful Kelleher.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    90. Jones goes agonisingly close to sealing the tie.
The midfielder takes Elliott’s pass in his stride on the left of the area, but arrows his drive across Sa inches beyond the far post.

    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    89. Harvey Elliott is named the BBC’s Man of the Match by Alan Shearer.
As it stands, the youngster’s early goal is the difference in this third round replay.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    87. The subs combine…
    …to no avail.
Nunes finds Cunha, who crosses into the middle for Costa.
The veteran striker does brilliantly to hold up and hold off before cushioning a pass back into the path of Cunha, who swipes well wide.
    Big chance for Wolves!
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    85. Ben Doak once again looks a livewire.
It would be no surprise to see the former Celtic starlet play some important cameos this season.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    83. A last throw of the dice for Julen Lopetegui, and what a throw it is.
It’s not just a six, more like three of them.
Football bad boy Diego Costa is given the nod to play the last seven minutes, replacing Raul Jimenez in the Wolves attack.
The striker’s last goal in English football came in the FA Cup final.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    81. Wolves are really started to threaten now with Traore and Ait-Nouri enjoying themselves on their respective flanks.
All of a sudden, the hosts fancy an equaliser.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    80. A little set-to involving Keita and Podence after the Liverpool man petulantly throws the ball away from the Wolves sub.
In an act of frustration, Podence kicks out a leg, leading to Keita going down late and in instalments.
    Something and nothing.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    78. “What’s he going to do next?” asks commentator Steve Wilson as Adama Traore charges to the touchline.
It’s the impossible question to answer because the Spaniard himself has no idea.
On this occasion, however, he lifts a superb cross into the middle that has Raul Jimenez on the prowl.
The Mexican striker should score, but somehow Gomez gets in front of him to clear.

Wolves 0-1 Liverpool – Liverpool double substitution
    75. Two more changes for the Reds that make it five in total.
And as one teenager goes off, another comes on.
Stefan Bajcetic can be very pleased with his night’s work, and he’ll be replaced by 17-year-old Ben Doak.
Also on is Fabinho for Thiago.

    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    73. Neves takes aim from the set-piece! Just over!
A swerving drive over the wall is straight down the middle, and keeps Kelleher on his toes as it soars inches above the crossbar.
Neves complains to the referee that the goalkeeper got a slight touch on the ball, but when isn’t he moaning?

Wolves 0-1 Liverpool – Phillips yellow card
    72. Here come Wolves again!
An incisive run from Cunha ends with Phillips bringing the Brazilian down just outside the penalty area.
It’s a yellow card for the Liverpool centre-back, and a free-kick to the hosts in a very dangerous position.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    71. A raking ball from Neves – his best involvement of the night – finds Cunha on the run, but the substitute is only able to lift a lob into the arms of Kelleher.
There also may have been an offside flag up on the far side, but let’s not worry about that.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    69. A moment of mild excitement as Semedo gets to the byline and stands up a peach of a cross into the six-yard box.
Cunha is lurking, but Konate is well placed to power a header clear.
Wolves 0-1 Liverpool – Liverpool triple substitution
    67. And now it’s Liverpool’s turn to make changes, three in fact.
Curtis Jones, Mo Salah and Nat Phillips all come on, signalling the end of the evening for Fabio Carvalho, Cody Gakpo and James Milner.
Wolves 0-1 Liverpool – Wolves double substitution
    65. Two more changes for Wolves as Daniel Podence and Matheus Cunha are introduced.
It’s the end of the night for Jonny and Joao Moutinho.
    Wolves 0-1 Liverpool
    64. Changes are being readied by both dugouts, and we approach the midway mark of the second half.

Van Gaal, 71, was sacked just two days after he led Man Utd to FA Cup glory over Crystal Palace in 2016.
Reports had suggested he got told he was going to be fired hours after the final whistle at Wembley and the club had supposedly been having secret talks with Jose Mourinho.
His wife Truus has said in an Amazon Prime documentary about his life that the ex-Netherlands boss was left heartbroken by the decision although she knew it was coming.
Truus, 69, said: “I knew Louis would be fired by Manchester United. I felt it.

When his wife returned to see him in person, Van Gaal was distraught.
She adds: “His voice sounded broken. When I came home, I could see he’d been crying. I hugged him. I had tears in my eyes too.”
This is not the first time revelations have been made about his sacking by the Red Devils.
Van Gaal previously said: “The way Man Utd treated me was terrible. They have been mean and low.”
He has also shared that the club had to pay him his full severance pay if he didn’t take a job for a year after his dismissal.
Therefore, Van Gaal deliberately rejected management offers so United had to pay him the full amount as he cited “revenge”.
Ex-Man Utd captain Wayne Rooney speaks in the documentary, expressing his disappointment that Van Gaal left.
The now DC United gaffer said: “I was very disappointed because I felt that everything was moving in the right direction.

‘They don’t want us to win’ – Wolves’ Neves in astonishing attack on English refs after Liverpool & Forest controversies

RUBEN NEVES has launched a blistering attack on the shocking state of English refereeing. And demanded to know why Wolves were prevented from progressing in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup by a series of controversial match-changing blunders.
Wolves have been on the end of some dodgy decisions latelyCredit: Getty
And Ruben Neves launched an astonishing rant about itCredit: Rex
“I’m not sure what is going on,” raged the Portuguese World Cup star. It feels like they don’t want us to win.”
Wolves’ fury erupted after they crashed out of the Carabao Cup following a dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat at Nottingham Forest in midweek.
Neves believes the tie should never have made it that far after his team-mate Matheus Nunes was denied a late penalty when Emmanuel Dennis’s studs caught Nunes’ heel, ripping the midfielder’s boot off in the process.
That controversy came hard on the heels of an equally contentious FA Cup decision at Anfield on Saturday when Toti’s late ‘winner,’ was disallowed despite the fact there was no VAR camera angle to support the onfield decision.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Wolves also believe they suffered from a flawed offside call which allowed Mo Salah to score Liverpool’s second goal from a blatantly offside position.
Their simmering frustration boiled over at the City Ground and rival players clashed after Forest’s dramatic shoot-out win set up a semi-final showdown with Manchester United at Wolves’ expense.
In an astonishing post-match tirade, Neves:

Accused referee Graham Scott of going AWOL while a post-match free-for-all broke out on his watch.
Speculated it would require a broken leg for Wolves to be awarded a penalty.
Claimed the image of English football has been tarnished by recent controversies.
And challenged referees to have the courage of their convictions to explain their decisions in post-match interviews.

Wolves players feel they haven’t only been battling relegation this season, they have also been battling against officialdom.
With no VAR in operation during League Cup ties, Neves presented Scott with Nunes’ ripped boot as evidence – only to be told he could only award the foul if the offence had occurred OUTSIDE the box!
Nunes rapped: “What happened last week was a shame for English football and what happened here is really bad for English football as well.
“The referee said to me the contact was not enough for him to give a penalty.
“Maybe it was not enough for him, but how can a referee decide if the contact is enough or not?
“Maybe if I stepped on his foot, like their player stepped on Matheus, he’d ask for a foul.
“He told us if the foul was in the middle of the pitch he would give it to us but that the criteria in the box is different and the contact was not deemed to be enough.
“Do we need to start breaking legs to have penalties in football?
To compound his frustration Neves also saw his penalty in shootout savedCredit: Getty
“I showed him Matheus’ boot, it was completely ripped!
“There’s no excuses. He didn’t give the penalty because he didn’t want to give it, that’s it.”
Neves’ mood darkened even further when his penalty was one of the two saved by Dean Henderson in the resulting shoot-out as Forest set up a glamour semi-final showdown with Man United.
Afterwards, the Portuguese ace spoke from the heart and took full responsibility for his costly miss, claiming referees should also be accountable for their actions.
Wolves are due to meet with new referees chief Howard Webb this week to flag up their concerns.
But Neves would prefer referee Graham Scott to explain his decision-making process to the public – rather than disappearing up the tunnel, to be protected by a wall of silence.
“At the end of the game everyone was fighting on the pitch and the referee was in the dressing room. That’s not normal,” said Neves.
“He should be outside seeing what is happening and which players need to have a red card. Instead he was inside while everyone was fighting.
Players erupted in a melee at the end of the Carabao Cup clashCredit: Getty
“Now I’m here talking about my s**t penalty, and he’s going home and he will not talk to anyone. It’s too easy for them.
“For me, I’m really sad because I really wanted to help my team win but I missed my penalty, and now I’m here talking to you.
“I really wanted him to say to the public what he said to me on the pitch. He said to me that the contact is not enough.
“How can a referee see the boot coming off the foot of a player and say the contact is not enough?
“If a boot comes off, you cannot play. He would stop the game.
“I cannot shoot the ball without the boot on my foot.
“Imagine, Matheus wanted to shoot with the ball and he had no boot on his foot. How can that happen?
“That’s not normal. There’s no excuse for it.
Julen Lopetegui spoke with the ref after the game against LiverpoolCredit: PA
Wolves asked for an explanation from the FA over the Liverpool decision
“Even the small details. I did a foul on Aurier, I stopped in front of him and he kicked my leg, then he screamed. I got a yellow card.
“I was asking why he gave me a yellow card and he said to me ‘no worries, if they do the same it will be a yellow card as well’.
“Morgan (Gibbs-White) kicked Max (Kilman) in exactly the same way and he said it wasn’t the same.
“We saw everything on the pitch and it’s really sad. I’m going home thinking about that really poor penalty, and he’s going home and doesn’t need to talk to anybody.”
Asked for his opinion on the post-match bust-up Neves replied: “Ask the referee!
“That’s why he’s here – to see what happened – ask him if he saw something.
“I was with our fans thanking them for their support. When I turned around everyone was fighting and the referee was not on the pitch.
“He was inside and that’s a mistake. I’m sure someone would have taken a red card, and that can change the next game.

And six days later, they surrounded the referee on the way to beating Oxford in the FA Cup.
Mikel Arteta’s men remonstrated with David Coote in the 34th minute of Monday’s third-round clash at the Kassam Stadium.

And that has now prompted another response from the FA, who said: “Arsenal FC has been charged with breaching FA Rule E20.1 during its tie against Oxford United FC in The FA Cup on Monday 9 January 2023.
“It’s alleged that Arsenal FC failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 34th minute, and the club has until Monday 16 January 2023 to respond.”
Goals from Mohamed Elneny and an Eddie Nketiah double ensured a safe passage into the fourth round, where Arsenal will face Manchester City in the standout tie.
However, the game is also being looked into by the FA over allegations of spot-fixing leading to suspicious betting patterns.
