Lewis Hamilton roars ‘that’s bulls***’ as penalty for illegal pit stop hands Gasly victory in action-packed Italian GP

LIVID Lewis Hamilton saw Italian Grand Prix glory slip through his fingers after a botched pit stop as Pierre Gasly won a crazy race at Monza.
The reigning world champion looked to be cruising towards a sixth win in eight this season while title rivals Valtteri Bottas and and Max Verstappen struggled.

But the race completely changed on it’s head when Kevin Magnussen crashed out midway through and parked his Haas at the entry to the pit lane.
The safety car was called out and Hamilton pitted straight away from the lead, unaware of the fact the pit lane was closed to recover Magnussen’s stranded car.
And that was followed moments later by a red flag after Charles Leclerc suffered a scary crash at the Parabolica chicane.
The Frenchman escaped unhurt, but it was the second Ferrari not to finish their home grand prix after Sebastian Vettel’s brake failure.

A livid Hamilton took a trip to the stewards’ room while the race was stopped to protest his case.
But the Brit was hit with a 10-second stop-go penalty and roared “that’s bulls**” over the team radio.
He dropped him all the way to the back of the pack when the race resumed with 26 laps to go.
And that freed up some unlikely potential winners to race it out at the front.

Gasly had just enough in the tank to guide his AlphaTauri to victory in their home grand prix from Carlos Sainz’s McLaren in second.

A crumb of comfort for Hamilton will be that title rival Max Verstappen retired while Valtteri Bottas finished off the podium in 5th.
The Brit fought his way back through the pack to finish 7th.
F1 stays in Italy for next week’s race at Mugello, which marks the halfway point in the 2020 season.

Leclerc suffers huge crash into tyre wall that STOPS Italian GP as Ferrari’s day turns to hell with Vettel already out

CHARLES LECLERC suffered a horrendous smash as he crashed out of the Italian GP – but thankfully somehow ran away unhurt.
The Frenchman lost control and slammed his Ferrari into the tyre wall.

Charles Leclerc crashed into the tyre wall and was out of the Italian GP

    5

The Frenchman lost control as his car smoked and that was the end of Ferrari’s race

Unsurprisingly, the race was immediately red flagged – the first time the GP at Monza has been stopped since 1995.
Despite the high-speed collision, Leclerc immediately was on the radio to his Ferrari mechanics to tell them he was okay.
He said: “Yeah. F***. I am sorry guys. That was a big crash.”
The car was already smoking when he wobbled off the track at the Parabolica final bend and headed to the left over the gravel as Leclerc braced himself for the heavy impact.

He was able to get himself out of the vehicle, which was a smouldering wreck, and jog away from the crash site.
Former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer reckons Leclerc was at fault, rather than the car.
Speaking on BBC 5Live, he said: “It is driver error rather than brake failure for Charles Leclerc.
“He has got on the power too early as he attempted to attack into the straight out of the corner.”

Leclerc was taken to the medical centre for a checkover but was released minutes later.
The back-left wheel was completely buckled at a right angle with the spoiler broken and the front of the car crumpled.
Even once the crane had picked up – at the second time after dropping it initially – the trashed famous scarlet car, the remaining wheel was still billowing out smoke.
The crash compounded a horror weekend for Ferrari in Italy who endured a nightmare qualifying and then saw Sebastian Vettel’s brakes fail early in the race.
After a lengthy delay to the race, it was restarted with Lewis Hamilton needing to take a ten-second pit penalty which took him from the front to the back of the grid, 23 seconds behind the pack.

Watch Lewis Hamilton record fastest lap in F1 history as he obliterates rivals at Monza to seal pole for Italian GP

LEWIS HAMILTON set the fastest lap in Formula One’s 70-year history – proving he doesn’t need a party mode to celebrate.
The Brit was prevented here at Monza from using the engine setting – dubbed ‘party mode’ by his race engineer, Pete Bonnington – that cranks it up to full power for qualifying.

New rules brought in by the sport’s governing body, the FIA, to try and stop his Mercedes team’s domination backfired as he again obliterated the rest of the field.
Hamilton did so at Monza – known as the Temple of Speed – breaking the track record TWICE and setting the fastest ever lap, with an average speed of 164.3mph.
Hamilton’s 94th pole position of his F1 career means he will start in P1 for Sunday’s Italian GP.
He said: “We said last week before they brought in the rule to slow us down it would not make any difference.

“Because we already have a great car and we will be better in other areas, it was just an incredible performance this weekend. This is the best we have ever been here, we really put the car in a sweet spot.

This is the best we have ever been here, we really put the car in a sweet spot.
    Lewis Hamilton

“In the years I have come here and I have had times with less downforce and grip but today, with the grip we had, the speeds going through were pretty awesome.”
As for stopping Merc’s qualifying advantage, that backfired for the FIA, as McLaren’s Carlos Sainz will line up in third place on the grid.
But the Spaniard was a WHOPPING 0.808 seconds behind Hamilton’s best time that set a new track record of 1:18.887.

While Mercedes were cruising, there was even more woe for Ferrari as the statistics for their shocking form continue.
Charles Leclerc qualified in 13th while four-time world champion, Sebastian Vettel, will be back in 17th on the grid, pending any penalties.

Incredibly, it is the first time in 36 years that Ferrari won’t have a car starting inside the top 10 at Monza.
And Vettel, who is leaving the team at the end of the season, has the unwelcome statistic of being the first Ferrari drivers to start outside the top 15 at Monza since Giancarlo Baghetti started in 16th in 1966.
Leclerc said: “It hurts even more when it’s at home, but it’s a reality at the moment for us unfortunately.
“We know Spa and here are probably the two worst tracks for us, with another one probably a bit later like this. It’s like this.
“It’s tough because once you do a good lap and you do P13 it doesn’t feel good. But, for now, it’s like this and I need to extract the maximum out of the car in the situation we are in and that’s what In tried to do.”

Vettel was the first to fall, knocked out of Q1 after he came unstuck in traffic as he squabbled for position through the Parabolica in order to maximise the tow along the pit straight.
Vettel said: “What a mess”, after he failed to improve on his time.
Leclerc made it through to Q2, but failed to trouble the top ten, eliminated in 13th.
He added: “The best I can do, the best I can do.”
In 70 editions of Ferrari’s home race, when both cars have gone to the line, the Italian team have never had both drivers finish outside the top ten – but that streak would appear to be in grave danger.
