The Brit could take up the offer of taking Paolo Barilla’s Ferrari 312B out for a spin[/caption]

Hamilton, 36, has often been linked with a move to Ferrari down the years, although is expected to eventually re-sign with Mercedes.

But he could end up taking a Ferrari out for a spin regardless.

The classic Ferrari 312B was raced by Swiss driver Clay Regazzoni in the 1970 season, and is now owned by Paolo Barilla – himself a former F1 racer.

Barilla, 59, competed for Minardi in 1990, but has now turned his attention to the business world, as the deputy chairman of pasta supremos the Barilla Group.

In an interview with motorsport.com, he talked fondly about the motor, although admitted that only a driver of Hamilton’s calibre could fully appreciate it.

He said: “I drove it in Monte Carlo and it really touched me. But the car is difficult to drive, so I won’t do it again.

“It would have to be a driver who can appreciate the emotions when you are behind the wheel of this car. I think Lewis Hamilton is such a driver.

“When I hear him talking about driving, I can feel he is a driver who can appreciate the special features of a car.”

Hamilton, who is busy getting himself ready for the upcoming season after recovering from coronavirus, has previously explained why a move to Ferrari has never quite lined up.

He said: “We talked on occasion but we didn’t go beyond understanding what options were on the table and they weren’t the right ones.

“Our positions have never aligned. I think timing matters and things happen in the end for a reason.

“In recent seasons, my contract always expired in years different from those of all the other drivers. In the end, that’s how it went.”
