      Max Verstappen’s bid to defend F1 title boosted by Brit Formula E driver Jake Dennis

      MAX VERSTAPPEN’s bid to defend his F1 crown is being boosted by British racer Jake Dennis.The 26-year-old from Nuneaton is Red Bull’s development driver and he also races in Formula E for the Andretti team.

      Dennis is a versatile driver and spends HOURS in Red Bull’s simulator to help fine-tune Verstappen’s race car.
      Meanwhile, he is also out to win the Formula E title himself this season, after finishing third in the championship last year during his rookie campaign.
      Dennis, who will race in the Rome ePrix on 9 and 10 April, says he enjoys balancing his own racing commitments with working for Red Bull.

      “I didn’t really have too much racing going on myself and they needed a driver who had a bit of F1 experience.

      While Verstappen and Sergio Perez are at the GP circuit and limited to three hour-long practice sessions, Dennis is driving in a virtual version and makes set-up changes trying to hone the car and making it quicker.
      He added: “When they’re running in FP1 of FP2, I’ll be there at the factory just running alongside their programme or trying any test items which they want testing.
      “They’ll send it on the simulator first to get all the calculations and the driver’s feedback, and then they’ll make their decision on whether they should make it onto the real life car or not.
      “The simulator is seriously impressive and allows the team to really get an advantage over some of the other teams.

      “There are some days where I will be in the simulator from 9am until 6pm and other days where I am offering race support.”
      Although he was overlooked for drives in F1, Dennis has had plenty of success in his junior career and is now enjoying his time racing for Andretti in Formula E.
      He added: “Formula E is a completely different ballgame. Formula One is obviously massively advanced in terms of speed and just pure grit but what the drivers can actually do in the actual racecar is very limited.
      “Obviously, they’ll drive as fast as they can but in Formula E, the software is so far more advanced and it is more technically involved for a driver.

      “There is never ending development in trying to improve the battery and the technology itself.
      “I had a great season last year as a rookie, so it only makes sense to try and beat that.
      “In Formula E, generally the best man on the day wins and that means you need to push even harder, make the car even faster and drive even better.
      “So hopefully we have made some progress from the last race in Mexico and have a good result in Rome this weekend.”

      Charles Leclerc takes pole and Max Verstappen in second for Australian Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton fifth on grid

      Leclerc, 24, had set the fastest time before the Spaniard’s crash but Verstappen then pipped him to set the fastest time of the day.
      The Frenchman had to respond and did exactly that with a blistering final lap, beating Verstappen by two-hundredths of a second.
      However his team-mate Carlos Sainz had a day to forget, finishing ninth after his first flying lap failed to record a time as the red flag was thrown due to Alonso’s crash, just before Sainz crossed the line.
      His compatriot Alonso will also be licking his wounds as he was 0.2secs up on Leclerc’s first lap time after two sectors of his flying lap before his incident.

      Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez took third with F1’s British trio finishing next behind him.
      Landa Norris took fourth with Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and George Russell next on the grid in fifth and sixth respectively.
      Daniel Ricciardo is next in seventh with Esteban Ocon eighth and Fernando Alonso tenth.
      Leclerc’s pole is his second of the year in three races and he was delighted with the result after admitting he has struggled so far this weekend.

      LANCE STROLL and Nicholas Latifi crashed out of qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix after an almighty mix-up.Williams’ Latifi, 26, went to overtake his Canadian compatriot seconds after letting Stroll pass during Q1.

      But the Aston Martin star, 23, unexpectedly manoeuvred across to the right-hand side of the track as Latifi was moving up the inside, causing the pair to collide.
      Stroll’s front wing crashed into Latifi’s back wheel, leading the latter to spiral out of control with his tyre running down the track ahead of him.
      The red flag had to be introduced and neither driver was able to deliver a qualifying time.
      Latifi was fuming after the incident, telling Sky Sports: “For me it’s quite clear.

      “I’ve just seen a video before coming here – I just went to go back wide to prepare my out lap, and he just turned into me once I was alongside him.
      “I let him through because he was pushing to open a lap, or so I was told.
      “Then I saw he aborted the lap, so I wanted to start my own preparation lap so I went back by him. Obviously there was a big gap and once I got past him, for whatever reason he decided to turn.”

      Verstappen on Ferrari vs Red Bull
      “We’re a tiny bit off Ferrari but I do think that we can maybe make it a little bit closer,” he said on Friday.
      “But they are quick again. In the long run everything looked quite stable and quite nice so I’m happy about that.
      “We definitely made some good improvements today.”
      Hamilton & Mercedes’ woes continue
      Lewis spoke after FP2 on Friday and revealed that things were still yet to improve with the car ahead of this weekend’s race.
      He groaned: “Just nothing we change on the car makes a difference at the moment. So that’s the difficult thing.
      “You get in [to the track] very optimistic, make changes, and then it doesn’t seem to be wanting to improve.
      “So we made some changes going to P2 and it ended up being a bit harder for me. I don’t know. It is just a tricky car.
      “There is not a lot we can do. This is the way it is. I just have to drive with it.
      “That’s the frustrating thing, you’re trying to push and catch and even when you do a decent lap, it’s 1.2s down so it’s difficult.”

      F1 icons James Hunt and Niki Lauda’s sons set to battle on track in one-off special race to raise money for Ukraine

      HUNT and Lauda, two of the most famous names in F1, are set to battle on track in a one-off special race for charity.Freddie Hunt, son of 1976 F1 champion James Hunt, will take on Mathias Lauda, son of three-time world champion Niki Lauda, in a race to raise funds to support Ukraine refugees.

      SunSport reported how eight-year-old go-karter Jarlath Sayer came up with the idea to stage a LeMans-style endurance race at Lewis Hamilton’s old track, Rye House in Hertfordshire.
      And now Hunt has signed up for the race on June 28 – and wants to face Lauda, just as their fathers’ famously battled on track for the 1976 F1 title.
      Both drivers are the subject of a new film, Sons of Speed, which is due to be released in the summer.
      Hunt said: “I will enter one team and have two others from the crew of the Sons of Speed film and hopefully Mattius will be in another team, although he’s not confirmed it yet.

      “We have a good relationship. We first met in 2009 but only spoke for five or 10 minutes and then we raced against each other in 2014, which is when the filming for the Sons of Speed started.
      “We are now friends but when we are on track, of course we want to beat each other.
      “Like Dad and Niki, they were mates too but our rivalry is not the same as our fathers, because we aren’t fighting for world championships, but we are still fighting to win.”
      Hunt, 34, says that living up to his famous’ father’s surname “screwed” his early career as he “put too much pressure” on himself to succeed.

      “There is not a lot we can do. This is the way it is. I just have to drive with it.

      Hamilton hit back saying: “I find it amusing some of the things that come out of his mouth….
      “I remember my first go-kart was fifth hand. I have driven lots of different cars and found myself relatively adaptable, so I should be good.”
      Hamilton also says his relationship with Russell, 24, is excellent after he replaced Valtteri Bottas in the team after five seasons.
      He added: “It’s good to be with someone younger, you know, I was just saying earlier on how old Valtteri is!
      “I think George has been great. I think he’s been great for the team. It was obviously an amazing journey that Valtteri and I had working together and George was already a part of the team before that.
      “So it’s been going really well. We were surfing together the other day and he’s blended really well into the team.”
      Meanwhile, the 37-year-old has welcomed the news that F1 will race in Las Vegas in 2023 but says he would like to see a GP in South Africa as Africa remains the only continent without a race on the current schedule.

      The German was offered a ride back to the paddock by a marshal before Vettel took control of the bike himself.

      But that was soon wiped off his face as new FIA Race Director Niels Wittich, called him up to his office to explain his actions.
