Man City 2 Dortmund 1: Erling Haaland scores sensational Kung-Fu kick late winner to down former club

WHO writes this guy’s scripts? It looked as though Erling Haaland was going to be upstaged by his close pal Jude Bellingham on his big night against his former club.

The Norwegian hot-shot had endured a frustrating night – well shackled by his ex-team-mate Mats Hummels and his defensive partner Niklas Sule.
But up he popped with a trademark acrobatic volley six minutes from time – which Pep Guardiola likened to an “incredible” Johan Cruyff goal against Atletico Madrid for Barcelona in 1973 – to complete another memorable Manchester City fight-back.
John Stones was a far more unlikely hero, lashing home from outside of the box to cancel out Bellingham’s opener.
However it’s hard to keep Haaland out of the headlines right now – and he gave Joao Cancelo’s delicious cross the finish it deserved.

That’s 13 goals in eight matches now in his fairytale start to life at the Etihad. He is going to take some stopping.
All eyes were on Haaland but he was not the only one with Dortmund connections.
Manuel Akanji was still on the books of the German club last month while skipper Ilkay Gundogan spent five years with them – and reached the 2013 Champions League final.
On the other side, US international Gio Reyna was a baby while his dad Claudio was the City captain.

Despite a shock 3-0 defeat to Leipzig on Saturday, the visitors looked confident right from the off.
Salih Ozcan curled a shot straight at Ederson while former Blackburn striker Anthony Modeste was thwarted by Nathan Ake as he looked set to be in on goal.
City were in control of the game but struggling to make any openings.
Just about their only effort on goal in that period was a wild 30 yard strike from Cancelo which sailed over the bar.
Record buy Jack Grealish was given a start for the second game in a row and a clever pass from Haaland created an opening for him.
He cut in from the left but shot straight at a defender and then frustratingly did the same again moments later.
On both occasions with a bit more awareness he could have passed with team-mates looking for the ball in the box.
Big things were expected of the former Aston Villa skipper in his second season here – but the fans are still waiting for him to kick-start his Citizens career.
Minutes later, a cross from Kevin de Bruyne was just behind Haaland – it had been that kind of half for City.
England midfielder Bellingham impressed Pep Guardiola when these two teams met in the quarter-final 17 months ago.
And the Dortmund ace gave a reminder of his quality as he broke up a City attack in his own area – then popped up in the other box a few seconds later.
He was denied by Rodri but it was a reminder of the 19-year-old’s threat.
The Dortmund fans in the South Stand at the Etihad spent much of the first half bouncing up and down – they barely stopped.
City, by comparison, had barely got going and no doubt Guardiola had a few harsh words for them at the break.
Pep had suggested pre-match that he was concerned about the proximity to Saturday’s lunchtime game at Wolves – and his team certainly played like it.
They could have found themselves behind within eight minutes of the re-start as Marco Reus skipped past his former team-mate Akanji on the left.
He put the ball onto his right foot and looked certain to score but curled his shot agonisingly wide of the post.
If that was a big let off for the English champs, it was only a brief reprieve as a corner from the right was only half cleared.
It dropped nicely for Reus who clipped a ball back into the middle and Bellingham got there first to nod past Ederson – who clearly hadn’t seen his run.
The youngster said on Tuesday night the whole of Birmingham would be supporting Dortmund.
And fans in the second city had more reason to cheer as ex-Villa favourite Grealish was hauled off straight away as Guardiola had seen enough.
Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez were off too with Julian Alvarez, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva all thrown on to replace them.
It certainly livened things up and Haaland finally got his chance, latching onto De Bruyne’s clever pass but striking his shot from a narrow angle against the outside of the post.
Keeper Alex Meyer probably had it covered and amazingly City had still not forced Dortmund’s second-choice keeper to make a save.
To be fair he had been superbly protected all night by centre-backs Hummels and Sule.
But when City did finally put an effort on target, they equalised.
Stones took a touch on the edge of the box before fizzing a 20-yard shot which seemed to take Meyer – and everyone else by surprise – as it flew past his ear.

Potter’s Sterling position change is genius as he combines with under-fire Mount for new Chelsea boss’ first goal

RAHEEM STERLING played in an unfamiliar new position in Graham Potter’s first game – but took to it like a duck to water. And Chelsea fans hailed their magical new manager as his shake-up led to immediate success with the first goal of his era.
Raheem Sterling scored the first goal of the Graham Potter eraCredit: Reuters
Sterling, 27, started at left wing-back in the Blues’ Champions League 1-1 draw at home to Red Bull Salzburg.
The Three Lions star has traditionally played as an attacking winger and even as a central striker at times under Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel.
    But Potter had other ideas.
Like Leandro Trossard at Brighton, he deployed Sterling on the left of a back five with Reece James on the opposite flank and Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Marc Cucurella central.

    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
It was certainly a fluid system with Sterling not tasked with too much defensive work as Cucurella moved across into his regular left-back role, allowing Sterling to push on and join the attacks – often even the furthest man forward.
Despite the inexperience as a wing-back, Sterling thrived and was arguably Chelsea’s best player in the first half.
And it got even better just three minutes after the break as Sterling collected the ball from under-fire Mason Mount’s cross.
He set himself with his first touch and then curled perfectly into the bottom corner to score the first goal of the Potter era – and did so under the watchful eye of England gaffer Gareth Southgate sat in the stands.

Sterling was named man of the match by BT Sport and said: “We played some good football at times. Under a new manager, we will get better and keep progressing.
“I was playing in a slightly different role. Graham said play out wide so in time I will get better.
“I’m happy to play along the front line. He wanted me out wide running at the full-back.
Meanwhile fans were quick to heap praise on the versatile £47million summer signing and Potter.
One fan tweeted: “Great goal by a great wing-back.”
Another wrote: “Sterling fits this system well.”
A third added: “Raheem Trossard – Potter magic working already.”
And a final wrote when the line-ups were announced: “Sterling left wing-back is funny. Potter is either a genius or stupid but time will tell.”
And if there was still any doubt, Sterling went on to win the BT Sport Man of the Match prize to silence any critics… for now.

Watch Rangers players join entire Ibrox crowd to sing National Anthem after emotional minute’s silence for The Queen

RANGERS players joined the Ibrox crowd in an emotional rendition of the National Anthem before their match with Napoli kicked off tonight. It was revealed earlier this afternoon that Rangers were going to pay tribute to The Queen with an enormous tifo covering the entire Broomloan stand.

And The Union Bears delivered with a spectacular display to pay their respects to her majesty, who sadly passed away aged 96 last Thursday.
Uefa banned UK clubs from singing the national anthem before their Champions League fixtures as they didn’t want the kick-off times delayed.
They instead decided stadiums could take part in a minute’s silence and players would wear black armbands during the matches.
But after Rangers were urged to defy the Uefa ban, Gio van Bronckhost’s side decided to take a stance and pay their respect to The Queen and allow the players and fans to unite in singing “God save the King” before kick-off.
A statement from the club, posted on Twitter earlier today read: “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be honoured this evening at Ibrox with a minute’s silence, a display created by the Union Bears, and a rendition of the Nation Anthem.
“If you are attending tonight’s match, we encourage all supporters to be in their seat for 19:50.”
Both marks of tribute were carried out perfectly with not a single peep heard during the minute’s silence.
The Rangers stars then immediately joined the emotional Ibrox crowd in belting out the National Anthem once the ref blew his whistle to end the silence.

It was a brilliant tribute to The Queen, who was greatly admired by many sections of the Rangers support.
Both sets of players are wearing black armbands in respect to The Queen during the Champions League fixture, as Uefa advised before this week’s round of fixtures.
Tonight’s match was originally scheduled to take place yesterday alongside the other game between Liverpool and Ajax elsewhere in the group.
But it was pushed back 24 hours because of the high demand of police needed for The Queen’s escort from Scotland to England yesterday.

Wednesday evening marked a new era at Stamford Bridge as Potter took charge of Chelsea for the first time.
But the home fans were not prepared to forget Tuchel entirely as they roundly applauded in the 21st minute – a nod to the German’s Champions League triumph with the club in 2021.
The applause replaced the giant “crowdsurfer” banner which Chelsea supporters would have used as a tribute, but due to the Queen’s death they decided not to as a sign of respect.
Before the game, Chelsea supporters movement “We Are The Shed” said: “Tonight will be our first game since Thomas Tuchel got sacked.

Tuchel broke his silence on Sunday as he addressed his sudden sacking by Chelsea.

Watch female reporter’s shocked reaction on live TV as Joe Hart kicks ball at her in warm up before Celtic clash

CELTIC keeper Joe Hart stunned a female reporter after hitting her with a ball during his warm-up on Wednesday evening. The ex-England keeper was practising his distribution on the pitch in Warsaw ahead of the Scottish champions 1-1 Champions League draw with Shakhtar Donetsk.
Hart struck a reporter with a ball during his warm-upCredit: Reuters
The presenter was focused on the camera on the touchline
Hart’s long pass struck her on the back and she was left thoroughly surprised
But he got one of his passes horribly wrong and ended up hitting the back of a pitchside presenter.
The reporter jolted in shock when the ball struck her, with social media joking about Hart’s mistake.
One person said: “Good to see his distribution is much improved.”
While another added: “Not a bad shot for a goalie 😂.”

And it wasn’t the only mistake Hart made in Poland.
Celtic took an early lead against Shakhtar but then Arsenal target Mykhaylo Mudryk equalised for the Ukrainian outfit – who are playing their home games in Warsaw due to the war in their home country.
Hart was somewhat to blame for conceding the goal as he appeared to dive out of the way of the strike.
And fans accused him of being “scared” of the ball.

Shakhtar Donetsk 1 Celtic 1: Wasteful Hoops held to draw in Poland after Mudryk equaliser

THE Seagulls might be looking at Celtic’s manager. But the Hoops’ Champions League group campaign is still waiting to properly take flight.
    Mudryk equlaises for Shakhtar
They jetted out of Warsaw after pocketing their first point in the competition for five years.
But after again dominating a lot of the ball they were left frustrated it wasn’t also their first win.
Just as a week earlier, a Shakhtar Donetsk side ravaged by war emerged with something after being happy to concede the ball for long spells.
It had all been going so well for Postecoglou – among the early favourites for the vacant Brighton post – when Artem Bondarenko deflected Reo Hatate’s effort past his own keeper in the 11th minute.

But Ukrainian superkid Mykhaylo Mudryk levelled out of nowhere on the half hour.
The Hoops dictated after the break but couldn’t find a second goal as their dismal away day run in the group stages continues.
Incredibly they have now managed just one clean sheet in their last 34 trips and picked up only two away wins from 31 journeys.
The draw follows on from last week’s 3-0 home defeat to Real Madrid.
    Most read in Football
As good as a point on the road might be in its own right it means they now have to try to take something again when they travel to German side RB Leipzig at the start of next month.
The game was played 1,000 miles from Shakhtar’s Donbass Stadium as Russia continues to attack Ukraine.
A pre-match video had reminded everyone inside the stadium where the real battlefield is right now.
Shakhtar had seen 13 of their players take advantage of a FIFA rule allowing them to leave for free because of the conflict.
It meant eight of the 11 who started had come through their academy including Mudryk, who Everton failed to land for £30 million in the summer and now has Arsenal chasing him.
The Hoops’ last Champions League involvement with a team in Warsaw was back in 2014, when they were crushed 6-1 by Legia on aggregate in the third qualifying round only to be reinstated after the Polish side played an ineligible player.
With both teams wearing black armbands Celtic typically started on the front foot and created a handful of half chances within the first five minutes.
Less than 120 seconds after kick-off a poor pass out from Shakhtar was seized on by O’Riley who slotted in Kyogo but the Japanese striker’s shot was saved by Anatoliy Trubin.
Sead Haksabanovic – handed his first start since joining from Rubin Kazan – then slotted in Greg Taylor whose shot come cross sailed wide.
Moments later Jota picked out O’Riley but his header lacked the power to trouble Trubin.
But their pressure eventually told as they took the lead.A long ball forwards from Josip Juranovic was picked up by Haksabanovic, who rolled the ball into Hatate’s path.
He aimed a pass towards Kyogo but instead the ball deflected off Bondarenko to catch out Trubin.
As the ball rolled goalwards Kyogo opted not to help it on its way and instead turned to celebrate as it crossed the line.
Hatate had scored at the same end of the stadium just two months ago when Celtic took part in Artur Boruc’s testimonial.
But this strike was so much more important as the Hoops netted their first away goal in a Champions League group game since Moussa Dembele’s effort in the 7-1 loss to PSG in November 2017.
Moritz Jenz had a chance to double their lead when the ball dropped to him inside the box but Trubin blocked again.
Shakhtar had beaten RB Leipzig 4-1 on Matchday One despite having just 36 percent possession and boss Igor Jovicevic went with a similar approach last night.
That plan worked perfectly as the Ukrainian champs burst forwards and bagged an equaliser on the half hour.
It was virtually their first chance of the game but they made the Hoops pay in devastating fashion.
Heorhiy Sudakov collected the ball then quickly threaded in a pass that left Juranovic on his heels as Mudryk cut inside the Croatian.
Mudryk burst forwards and smashed a shot that Joe Hart might think he should have done better with as he got a hand to the ball only to help it on its way into the goal.
The Hoops looked rattled and Shakhtar had the ball in the net again less than three minutes later.
This time is was former Hoops wideman Marian Shved, who rattled past Hart at the second time of asking after more Mudryk magic down the left.

But his joy was short-lived as he turned to see the assistant’s flag raised for offside.
By now the fans inside the Legia stadium – many of them Ukrainian evacuees – had found a voice and were cheering on their country’s champions.
Shved – who made just three Hoops appearances – went close again, going on a mazy run before curling in a dipping left foot shot which a diving Hart pushed away.
Celtic had completely dropped out of the game and Postecoglou needed half-time to settle things down. The Celts gaffer replaced Haksabanovic with Daizen Maeda at the break.
Jota, playing on the left, forced Trubin to push away an early curling effort. The goalie then did the same to an O’Riley strike midway through the second half.
On 68 minutes Aaron Mooy, David Turnbull and Giorgos Giakoumakis were sent on for Hatate, O’Riley and Kyogo.
Giakoumakis passed up a great chance with five minutes left, spooning wide when the ball found its way to him inside the box.
In a late onslaught Maeda diverted Juranovic’s cross past the post and Giakoumakis saw a chance cleared off the line by Valeriy Bondar.
