Nick Faldo Talks About Retirement and More

The six-time major champion has retired after 16 years as a CBS analyst. It’s given him time to consider playing one last tournament. For the first time since 2006, England’s Nick Faldo wasn’t in the booth this past season as the lead golf analyst for CBS.He was on the range — and not just the driving range. A six-time major champion from 1987 through 1996, he was at his home in Montana.Faldo, 66, the only four-time winner of the BMW PGA Championship, which begins Thursday at the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, discussed recently those victories and the game that has meant so much to him.The following conversation has been edited and condensed.Do you miss your job at CBS?Yes and no. I loved being with the guys, but I had enough of being out there every week. They’ve just done 23 tournaments this season, and I couldn’t do that anymore. I’ve been flying since I was 19, when I went on tour. I’ve got plenty to do. [Golf course] design work is going very well. It’s just nice to be chilling and doing your own thing each day.Are you paying attention to the tour? Not as much. I’ve rarely watched it on TV. I’ve watched it maybe through highlights on social media. I’m more interested in the Ryder Cup because I’m going. I think it’s going to be really big, a great atmosphere.Nick Faldo and Fanny Sunesson, his former caddie, at the 2022 British Open.David Cannon/Getty ImagesWho do you think will win it?I think our backbone looks more impressive than America’s backbone at the moment, to be really honest. What do you mean by the backbone? The top six. Back in my day, [former Europe captain] Tony Jacklin said, “You six, you’re playing five matches. You’re doing the heavy lifting.” We said, “Fine.”So, are you going as far as to say that Europe is going to win?Yeah, I would. We should.Has Team Europe’s captain, Luke Donald, picked your brain at all?Yeah. I bumped into him at the [British] Open. A couple of little ideas I had, mainly for practice. I won’t say what.Of your four victories at Wentworth, do any one of them stand out?Well, I really enjoyed the one at Royal St. George’s [in 1980] because we played that in May. And that golf course in May, if you get just a little bit of rain on the links, is perfect. That week, all I practiced were one, two, and three irons. It paid off. I remember hitting one iron into 15, that tiny little green. It was one of the key shots on the way to winning. That turf was so gorgeous to hit off. What kind of player does the Wentworth course suit?A pretty accurate one. There are trees literally left and right. That’s its main character.Nick Faldo after his win at Royal Birkdale in 1978.Phil Sheldon/Popperfoto, via Getty ImagesThe victory over Ken Brown, in 1978 at Royal Birkdale was a big one, wasn’t it?That was the very first 72-hole [tournament] I won, which was amazing because I had already played a Ryder Cup. On the putting green, I was holing like 40-footers, thinking, “Oh, this is good.” I won about 10,000 pounds. How about that? It was the PGA. It was big. I loved it.Are you playing any golf these days?Yeah, I’ve got a nice club here and a really nice range, a [Tom] Weiskopf course. I still like to pop up there and belt balls. What do you get out of it?Well, that’s the great thing about our game. I go up there, and I’ve got different spots on downslopes and sideslopes and I whack away. I wear myself out for an hour and a half, and I still learn something. And I think I’ve still got it. Isn’t that great? That’s 50 plus years later. I’d love to play one more [tournament]. I want to get myself fit and strong.Where?I don’t know yet. I want to get Fanny [Sunesson, his former caddie] on the bag.Are you serious about this?Yeah. I want to play something. And the big word is, Can I enjoy it? That’s the only goal. Somewhere [on the senior tour] where I have time to gear up. I’ll try to do something next year. I got to. I’ll be 67 next summer. More

TNT Sports vs CBS Sports rich list: How star line-ups compare as they go head-to-head in Champions League coverage

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE nights are always a blockbuster occasion – on both sides of the pond. And as the new season gets underway, viewers in the UK are preparing for new-look coverage with Laura Woods fronting TNT Sports.

Over in America, meanwhile, CBS have the broadcast rights with former Sky Sports star Kate Abdo in the presenter’s hotseat.
But who are the key players-turned-pundits providing all the expert analysis – and how much are they worth?
    TNT SPORTS
Well, TNT have retained many of the pundits who worked for BT Sport last season as Manchester City were crowned Kings of Europe.
And that means the three main stars are Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole and Peter Crouch – with Owen Hargreaves, Steve McManaman, Joleon Lescott, Michael Owen and Paul Scholes among those also used.

Ferdinand enjoyed the most successful career on the pitch of the flagship trio, collecting ten major honours with Manchester United including six Premier League crowns – plus the Intertoto Cup with West Ham.
Now the retired centre-back combines his punditry work with various other ventures including his #5 Magazine, podcast and shop, White Chalk Music record label, Rio Ferdinand Foundation, the DeliveryApp tech platform and his Rosso restaurant.
Reports online suggest Ferdinand’s wealth stands at around £58million.
Cole was Ferdinand’s Hammers team-mate for that Intertoto Cup win but went to Chelsea, where he won six trophies as the Blues lost the 2008 Champions League final to United.

Like his TNT co-star, the former playmaker has his own podcast – The Joe Cole Cast – and the footballer is valued at around £35m.
Crouch’s only major honour was the 2006 FA Cup during his stint at Liverpool, one of 11 clubs he represented during his 21-year career.
He also scored an impressive 22 goals in 42 England caps before launching his own career in TV with BT, a BBC show and an appearance on The Masked Dancer.
Elsewhere, the 6ft 7ins funnyman has his own hugely-successful and hilarious podcast which has led to a couple of live arena shows.

Married to model Abbey Clancy, they have appeared in Paddy Power adverts together and have four kids.
Crouch is said to be worth approximately £25m thanks to his lucrative football career and subsequent deals.
That totals £118m for Ferdinand, Cole and Crouch combined.
    CBS
CBS’ coverage has proved mightily popular over recent seasons since acquiring the rights in the US from the 2020-21 campaign.
Produced in Stockley Park, London, by IMG, the three regulars in the studio with Abdo are 2009 Champions League winner Thierry Henry, 2005 Champions League winner Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards, who managed five appearances in the Champions League.
The quartet have brilliant chemistry on air and regularly take the mick out of Richards for his lack of a winner’s medal.
Peter Schmeichel, Alex Scott and Freddie Ljungberg have also appeared on the Sports Golazo Champions League show.
Henry’s sensational playing career saw him crowned a Premier League, FA Cup, LaLiga, Cope del Rey, Champions League, Club World Cup, Super Cup, Euros and World Cup winner.
He also had two podium finishes in the Ballon d’Or before retiring in 2014, stepping into punditry and coaching with Belgium, Monaco and Montreal Impact.

Henry has made some TV appearances, is a Unicef ambassador and has various commercial deals with Renault and Pepsi – with all of that taking his net worth to just north of £100m.
Carragher spent his entire career with boyhood club Liverpool, racking up 737 appearances for the Reds and winning seven major honours including that famous 2005 Champions League, beating AC Milan on penalties.
The two-time player of the year – second on the all-time list for own goals – also earned 38 England caps.
Now he spends most weekends working as a pundit and co-commentator for Sky Sports, striking up a fantastic partnership with ex-rival Gary Neville, and is on CBS for the European nights.
Elsewhere, Carragher has a newspaper column and helped launch a range of affordable e-bikes with fellow Liverpudlian Tony Bellew.
His net worth is estimated now at around £16m.
Richards may not have the football pedigree of his fellow pundits Henry and Carragher, but he is sure doing a whole load of TV work.
The Manchester City ambassador combines his CBS appearances with providing analysis – and lots of laughs – for Sky Sports and the BBC.

Fans heartbroken after realising there could be huge update to CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage in 2023-24

FANS have loved the on-screen chemistry between Kate Abdo, Thierry Henry, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards on CBS this season. But Thierry Henry’s rumoured next coaching move may see him swap the studio for the sidelines next term.
Fans have loved CBS’ coverage of the Champions League this seasonCredit: Twitter / @CBSSportsGolazo
According to reports in France, Julian Nagelsmann is the front runner to take the PSG hotseat.
And L’Equipe report the young German manager wants Henry as his assistant next season – despite never having worked with him.
Henry has not coached since departing as Belgium’s assistant boss following the World Cup.
He has instead spent his time working as a pundit on French television as well as working with the CBS team for Champions League coverage.

With L’Equipe reporting that talks between PSG and Nagelsmann are at an advanced stage, fans are gutted that the CBS punditry team is set to be broken up.
An Arsenal fan tweeted: “THIERRY NOOOO WE’RE FINALLY BACK IN THE UCL DON’T YOU DARE LEAVE CBS”
Another responded to the L’Equipe reports saying: “That means no more Thierry at CBS 😩”
One fan added: “CBS Sports Golazo won’t be the same without Thierry.”

Fans have loved the laid back approach of CBS’ coverage this season which has given Abdo, Carragher, Henry and Richards the space to express themselves on air.
Ahead of Inter and AC’s Milan derby semi-final second leg, the pundits were left in stitches after a gaff from Abdo saw her say she was reporting for Fox instead of CBS.
Henry jokingly walked away as Abdo said: “I’m about to get fired.”
Fans also loved the moment earlier this season when Carragher had to bring Abdo a bottle of water when she fluffed her lines for a preview of a Champions League game.
Perhaps the highlight of the season came when Carragher left Milan’s Leao baffled with his Italian pronunciation – and Richards in stitches.
Some fans have already begun talk online about Henry’s CBS replacement, with one suggesting the recently retired Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the only man that can fill Henry’s boots.
One fan tweeted in response to Zlatan’s retirement: “CBS should go after him if Thierry Henry takes the job on the PSG coaching staff.” More

Jamie Carragher slams ‘CLOWN’ Rio Ferdinand and even takes dig at Steven Gerrard as he savages BT Sport punditry

The trio were all on punditry duty for their respective outlets in yesterday’s Champions League semi-final between AC and Inter Milan.
Two early goals from the Nerazzurri saw them secure a 2-0 advantage in the first leg.
It could and should have been more as they ended up having 16 shots at goal in a dominant performance.
But Inter felt they were wrongly denied a penalty in the first half when Lautaro Martinez went down following contact from Simon Kjaer.

The referee initially blew for a spot-kick and even proceeded to book the Dane.
But VAR advised him to check a replay, and after consulting the pitch-side monitor he reversed his decision.
Footage suggested there had been some contact on Martinez, albeit he had made the most of it.
BT Sport duo Ferdinand and Gerrard were livid at the ref’s decision to overturn the penalty.

But Carragher was adamant that, especially after watching the replay, it was the right call.
And he left fellow CBS pundits Thierry Henry and Micah Richards stunned with his comments.
Carragher said: “I think anyone out there who is watching the replay and seeing what VAR do and still believe that is a penalty, they must be a clown.”
When shown a tweet revealing Gerrard’s thoughts, Carragher continued: “He was an attacking player, wasn’t he?
“He was liable a little bit himself under a little bit of contact — always contact, never a dive. I understand where he is coming from.
“It’s just when players in my position who are defenders, English defenders who are commentating on the game…
“I understand attackers thinking it was a penalty if you (Henry) did, and Steve was an attacker. Maybe he felt there was a little bit of contact.
Rio Ferdinand! I’m happy to call him a clownJamie Carragher
“But as a defender we have to stick together, don’t we, and I just felt people were getting a little bit carried away.”
Pal Richards then chirped: “Name names!”
To which Carragher replied: “Rio Ferdinand! I’m happy to call him a clown.”
But Ferdinand doubled down as he tweeted: “Still think it’s a penalty…”
Ferdinand and Carragher famously clashed on Twitter in October after the latter was snubbed pitch-side by ex-Man Utd striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
Responding to Ferdinand joking he was upset, Carragher said: “No I’m delighted it went viral.
“Rio I know how it works, he’s your mate and you/Evra and the rest are on the group Whatsap and he asks you to come out and defend him.

And much-loved ex-City defender Richards was tasked with providing analysis for American channel CBS Sports along with Liverpool legend Carra and Thierry Henry in the studio.
Before the game he was pressed to make a prediction on the scoreline and how it would pan out.
And it’s fair to say Richards didn’t have much to go on.
Richards said: “Don’t ask me about the game because I don’t know what it’s going to be.

Carragher continued: “It just says ‘Man City’ and ‘Real Madrid.’”

Thierry Henry and Micah Richards hide faces in embarrassment as Jamie Carragher auditions for new role on CBS Sports

However, after a bit of bantering, the 45-year-old and host Kate Abdo swapped places as the show returned from an ad break.
That meant that Carragher sat in the main chair, with Abdo squeezing between Henry and Richards, and led the show after an ad break.
Carragher started with: “Welcome back to London town. Like Chelsea, Lady Abdo has been a bit just… A bit… disjointed tonight,” as both he and his colleagues burst out laughing at his mistake.
“We are giving her a segment off. Jules wasn’t available at such short notice so ladies and gentlemen, and Micah, Kate is now in the, err, in the hotseat,” he continued.

“You want me to keep reading… Welcome to the Carra Show. Delicious passes, a smorgasbord of splendid goals and invariably compelling semi-final stories.
“Lads, time for a good little natter and remember, you can feel it but don’t become it.”
“That was smooth,” declared Richards as Henry agreed that it was “very good” – despite the pair both cringing at first and covering their faces in embarrassment.
Carragher then turned the tables again on Abdo by asking for her semi-final predictions, which she produced an impressive response to herself.

But Richards soon stopped her in her tracks by saying: “You’re doing too good now, turn it down a notch!”
After then going to reporter Mike Grella live in the studio, the anchor then challenged those in the studio on their Italian.
But they failed miserably, with Grella even declaring that Carragher had called the Milan derby wrongly the “derby where somebody is sick”.
With more laughing in the studio, Carragher, who now appeared to be getting the swing of it, almost expertly cut out to the break and after the clip was shared, fans loved it on Twitter.
One wrote: “Best current football content on Twitter please keep flooding.”
“These guys are good, funny, and engaging,” tweeted another.
A fellow fan said: “Just great content!”
Meanwhile, Carragher and Richards burst out laughing when Fikayo Tomori had earlier described Thierry Henry in glowing terms.
The CBS Sports pundits chatted to the ace, who grew up in Kent. And he had the panel in stitches with his comment after Milan’s triumph over Napoli this week.
Carragher said: “A little birdie tells me the guy who asked the question before me [Henry] is one of your biggest idols. What are your thoughts of him as a pundit as well as a player?”
Tomori replied: “As a player of course there’s not much to be said.
“Growing up, Thierry I hope you don’t mind me embarrassing you like this, but yeah I was a big fan and he was my idol. Obviously as I was getting older, I moved further back down the pitch.”
Then he cracked the former defenders in the studio up as he added: “As a pundit, he’s really funny.”
Carragher immediately jumped in, shouting: “Funny? Funny? That’s me and Micah not Thierry, he’s the analyst.”
But Tomori explained: “We were watching the video of him doing the guess who and he guessed himself twice instead of Oli [Giroud]. So yeah he’s really funny.”

And that prompted more hilarious reactions from the ex-players and host Kate Abdo.
But Abdo did have to apologise to Tomori after blunder pair Carragher and Richards both mispronounced his name as Fuh-kaw-ree instead of Fuh-kay-ow. More

Trevor Immelman, From Champion to the TV Booth

He won the Masters in 2008 and is now the lead golf analyst for CBS.Trevor Immelman didn’t appear to be on his game when he arrived at Augusta National Golf Club in April 2008. He’d just missed the cut at a tournament in Houston and in eight starts that year on the PGA Tour, had recorded only one top 20.No matter. He won the Masters Tournament by three strokes over Tiger Woods for his second tour victory. His first came at the Cialis Western Open in 2006.Immelman of South Africa, who has had many injuries, is no longer an active player. He has replaced Nick Faldo to become the lead analyst for CBS which will cover the Masters that begins on Thursday.Immelman, 43, reflected recently on his win in 2008 and role in the booth. The following conversation has been edited and condensed. When you think of that week, what comes to mind?In a lot of ways, it still feels like it was just yesterday. That obviously was an incredible week for my family and I, life changing really.Where did the magic suddenly come from?I won a huge tournament in South Africa at the end of 2007, and all of a sudden I started having some breathing issues. I had a tumor on my diaphragm. I had to have surgery. Thankfully, the tumor was benign. It took three months before I could start swinging again. I made an extremely slow start in ’08, but at the Houston Open, I only missed the cut by one shot and something clicked for me there. I went to Augusta feeling a little better about things. What did it feel like on Sunday to walk down the fairway at 18?It was the first time all week that I came out of this bubble or the zone or whatever you want to call it, and I started to recognize friends and family members and hear all the cheers. I’d watched all my heroes make that walk and win that tournament, and now for that to actually be happening to me was so mega-, mega-surreal.From left, Brian Anderson, Trevor Immelman and Charles Barkley on set at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Fla., last year.Mike Ehrmann/Getty ImagesWho did you hear from afterward that might have surprised you?Yogi Berra, how about that? I had played with him at the Pro-Am at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, so him and I had kept in touch. He gave me a ring, which was awesome. Was it tough to give up being a player? When I played and competed in a bunch of Masters and on tours all over the world, I gave it absolutely everything I could. To the point where I broke my body to pieces. So I can put my head on the pillow at night and be comfortable that I got as much out of my talent that I could. It also isn’t painful because I really enjoy this new chapter. So it was really your body breaking down, not your game? They go hand in hand. I blew out my wrist a couple of years after I won the Masters. I had to get a few surgeries on it and was just never quite the same.As of the second week of March, who are the favorites for Augusta? It’s quite open. It’s not like when I used to play, when it was 90 percent chance Tiger Woods was going to win and the rest of the field had a 10 percent chance. We’ve got 10 guys I believe are coming in there as favorites. Is there an international player we haven’t heard of who is a star on the horizon? His name is S.H. Kim. He’s 24. I got to spend some time with him this year. He is a stud. Has enough power to work the ball both ways, solid short game, and I would be extremely surprised if he doesn’t make the [2024] Presidents Cup team [the international competition held every two years].What is the toughest part of being lead analyst?Being able to take a side and have an opinion when the moment is right. There will be times when something polarizing happens and, as lead analyst, you need to be able to comment on what you think is right. You can’t always ride the fence. More
