Talks over major shake-up to English football that could change FA and Carabao Cups & see Community Shield played ABROAD

A MEETING will take place on Friday over a major shake-up to the English game that could see changes to the FA and Carabao Cup and the Community Shield played abroad. The country’s leading footy figures from the FA, Premier League and EFL are set for talks to thrash out a number of proposals made from top-flight clubs.
The Community Shield could be set to be switched abroadCredit: The Times
As reported previously, these include Premier League clubs looking into SCRAPPING replays in the FA Cup.
This idea forms part of a “New Deal for Football”, which could also see sides competing in Europe play U21 sides in the Carabao Cup.
The Times is also now stating that Community Shield could be switched from its traditional place as the season’s curtain-raiser.
The game, which is contested between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners, raises money for charities and grassroots projects.

It usually occurs on the Sunday before the start of the top-flight campaign kicks-off – a time that big clubs are claiming disrupts their pre-season build-up and also affects the opportunities of lucrative overseas tours.
Several alternatives have been offered regarding a date change – as well as playing it abroad in order to promote the Premier League globally.
This fresh update says that “at least one club would like it to be an ‘All Stars’ game”.
That would see “each Premier League team providing a maximum of two players and playing against the top stars from other European leagues” instead of its current format.

Discussions will take place over ideas to potentially deliver £300million in extra funds to the EFL while also reforming parachute payments.
The ideas all come after the government warned the Premier League must provide a major cash injection for the EFL with a new deal – or else be forced to do so.
However, top-flight clubs have only agreed to about £160m so far. More

And Charlton’s reward was a mouthwatering trip to Manchester United in the quarter-finals.
However, before their ecstasy in the shoot-out, Addicks were left outraged when Ecuadorian left-back Estupinan, 24, attempted to cheat in order to con the referee into giving a penalty.
As he saw Charlton star Rak Sakyi, on-loan from Crystal Palace, slip while trying to clear, the Brighton man darted towards the ball before taking an over-the-top tumble as he tried to force contact with the sprawling youngster.
The 20-year-old looked completely puzzled as he saw Estupinan rolling around in apparent agony – but fortunately the ref was not convinced.

And after a replay of the clip was shared on social media, fans have demanded that the FA take action.
“Give him a 12 game ban, will soon stamp out the cheating,” blasted one, with another saying: “Hands down cheating. Couldn’t be simpler.”
Another claimed: “Everything that is wrong with the beautiful game. Give me 80’s football any day!”
Another tweeted: “That’s a disgrace!!! Need to start getting this out of the game. Long bans will do the job!!!”

The projectile was hurled from the Liverpool section at the Etihad stadium down onto fans below – injuring another person

Fans all say the same thing as Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney spotted at Man City vs Liverpool Carabao Cup clash

FANS worried Wayne Rooney had got lost after he turned up at Etihad to watch the two Prem clubs he most wanted to beat. The Manchester United and Everton legend saw Man City KO Liverpool 3-2 in a Carabao Cup cracker.
Wayne Rooney didn’t give any clues as to why he was watching two of his big rivals with this expression in the Etihad stands
Perhaps this is the Rooney thinking that many fans were too polite to suggest
The only certainty is that the former England skipper wasn’t Christmas shopping – as his two old Prem rivals are of course way out of the DC manager’s league for transfer targets.
And this fan got to the point: “WTF is Wayne Rooney doing here?!”
Another said: “Wayne Rooney lost or something? watching man city vs Liverpool ?”
The longest shot seemed to be this: “Maybe Rooney is a Man City fan now.”
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
But that wasn’t the most intriguing suggestion.
One observer perhaps remembered Rooney’s son Kai had been spotted in a City hoodie last year – for which the United academy whizkid was teased by Old Trafford legend Rio Ferdinand.
The fan posted: “For those that don’t know, his son is a City fan.
“So fair play to him, this is actually him being a good dad to take him to watch City. Never thought I’d say that about him but this is actually such a moment.”

Judging purely on the moment Rooney was pictured, he didn’t look too happy or excited to be there.
But, just like he could with the ball at his feet on the pitch, perhaps he bursts into life in the stands at unpredictable moments.
He should have left feeling entertained, though, as Pep Guardiola’s men and Liverpool both looked in good nick ahead of the Prem resuming at Christmas.
Second-placed City have the longest wait before visiting Leeds on Wednesday.
Before that, on Monday, Liverpool travel to Aston Villa and Rooney’s old club Everton host Wolves.
Inbetween those dates, Nottingham Forest go to Old Trafford on Tuesday.
The Red Devils will fancy their Carabao Cup chances even more after being drawn at home to League One Charlton in the quarter-finals.
The other three clashes are all-Prem ties.

And they were made to wait after Sky experienced technical issues pitchside at the Etihad, delaying the draw until nearly 11pm – an hour after Manchester City beat Liverpool.
But it was worth it for the third-tier Londoners as they have been handed a dream tie against United after their penalty shootout win over Brighton on Wednesday.
The Red Devils eased into the quarters with a 2-0 win over Burnley the same night.
It will be the first meeting between the United and Charlton since February 2007, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side running out 2-0 winners.

In fact, Charlton’s last win against their last-eight opponents came way back in November 1989.

But trust the best sides in the country to blow the cobwebs away and provide the perfect pick me up.
Both clubs had pleaded for calm in the build up to the game after a series of problems among supporters in recent years.
That seemed to be heeded in the stands – but on the pitch it was anything but peaceful.
Five goals – including the inevitable one from Erling Haaland – a host of missed chances for both sides and plenty of needle between these two deadly rivals.

If this doesn’t get your juices flowing for the return of domestic football and what lies ahead then nothing will.
You simply couldn’t take your eyes off it right from the very first minute.
While 16 of his team-mates have been on duty at the World Cup, Haaland has been putting his feet up for a few weeks.
The Norwegian was probably counting down the days until this one and maybe he was a bit over-enthusiastic when a big moment arrived in the first minute.
    Most read in Football
He was picked out by Ilkay Gundogan and as he raced through on goal, Caoimhin Kelleher had come racing out.
Haaland lifted his effort over the advancing keeper but got it all wrong as his effort was high and wide.
While Aymeric Laporte snuffed out a chance for Darwin Nunez, the best chances were coming for the home side.
A low cross from Kevin De Bruyne picked out Cole Palmer in the middle but the England U21 ace got his feet in a muddle and bundled his effort wide.
At least the youngster was involved in the build up as City did take the lead in the tenth minute – working it out to De Bruyne on the left.
The Belgian’s teasing cross saw Haaland escape from Joe Gomez before stabbing a low shot into the corner giving Kelleher no chance.
Business as usual for the former Borussia Dortmund man – who made it 24 for the season.
But City’s lead lasted just 10 minutes as Joel Matip and James Milner created the opening for Fabio Carvalho who steered a low shot past Stefan Ortega with the minimum of fuss.
That settled the visitors down although the best chances were still falling to the champions.
Palmer’s cross looked destined for the head of Haaland but a flick from Mahrez took it just out of his reach.
Another break saw De Bruyne pull a cross back for Gundogan who was denied by the legs of Kelleher.
The Reds keeper was there again minutes later to push away a diving header from Nathan Ake after yet more great work from De Bruyne.
Former City man Milner was forced to hobble off just before the break with Nat Phillips on to replace him.
And the centre back was called straight into action with a brilliant last ditch tackle to deny Haaland another sight of goal.
Liverpool finished the half strongly as Nunez sprang the offside trap and cut in from the right but thumped his shot across the face of goal and wide of the far post.
And the Uruguyan had another chance when Andy Robertson’s free-kick reached him but once again he placed his volley wide of the far post.
What a half it had been but it got even better in the first four minutes of the restart.
First Mahrez – another player who should be refreshed after missing the World Cup – collected a pass from Rodri.
The Algerian drifted in from the right before curling a trademark left-footer around Kelleher.
This time though, the lead lasted less than a minute.
Sub Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain sent Nunez away down the left and he managed to outpace Laporte.
He picked out strike partner Mo Salah who had all the time he needed to roll home his 15th goal of the season.
It was thrilling stuff but it was by no means finished there.
A short corner routine saw De Bruyne hang up a beautiful cross from the left and all Ake had to do was get his head on it to restore City’s lead.
De Bruyne had been truly outstanding – he dressed up as Santa for a club charity event in the week and here he was dishing out presents to his team-mates left, right and centre.
What on earth went wrong in Qatar as his dismal Belgium side crashed out in the group stage?
Still City had half an hour to hold on this time and Nunez could have levelled again as he again beat the offside trap and raced clear but pulled his shot wide.
And back at the other end, sub Fabinho cleared a De Bruyne effort off the line to deny the Belgian a goal he deserved.

The lead did not last long though as Fabio Carvalho converted 10 minutes later to pull his side level, slotting home after an excellent cut-back.
Just seconds into the second-half, Riyad Mahrez put his side back ahead but the lead only lasted a matter of minutes, with Mohamed Salah making it all level again.

    Santa arrives early in Manchester
In Germany, Santa Claus does not come down the chimney but is an angle type-figure that arrives on Christmas Eve giving people gifts.
His Liverpool team must have got their dates mixed up as they continue to give their opponents gifts, week in, week out.
It is costing them points and more importantly, wins.
This isn’t an overnight problem and has been evident all season, but time to address this issue is slowly running out.

    Pep to pick the holes
You do not become a manager with the record of Guardiola without even analysing your wins as well as your defeats.
While the result will please him, it will be a concern how many times Liverpool got in against them in what was quite a one-sided game.
The amount of missed chances will also worry him, Brentford showed what happens if you take your chances against Man City.
Still plenty of work to do for the Spaniard, if he has any aspirations to catch his protégé at the top of the Premier League table.
    Belgian treats for Christmas time
Kevin De Bruyne put in the sort of performance that would make any football fan sit and watch in amazement.
The quality of delivery of his passing was nothing short of world-class this evening.
If anything, he was often let down by the quality of the person on the end of the pass.
People questioned whether, much like the rest of his international teammates, he was a spent force now.
What a way to answer your critics in 90 minutes of football.

The referee brings the game to a close.
Liverpool, the current holders, are out of the EFL Cup.
City continue to the next round in a trophy they have grown to love during the Pep Guardiola era.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
90+3. This result will give City some confidence going back into their Premier League campaign.
Project ‘catch Arsenal’ resumes just after Christmas.
Jurgen Klopp will be looking for a different outcome from his first XI when back in league action.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
90+1. Rightly so, Kevin De Bruyne wins the man of the match award.
By far the best player on the pitch today.
City still look to attack, despite their one goal lead.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    89. It is harsh for either of these sides to go out so early in the competition.
The defending champions are going to get knocked out by the team who won this trophy four years in a row.
If they want to defend their crown, they need to find a moment of magic from somewhere.
We will have four minutes of added time.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    87. City have deserved their win today.
Liverpool could have quite easily turned it into a defeat, had they been more clinical in front of goal.
Overall, Man City have dominated the ball and the chances.

    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    85. The ball breaks to De Bruyne who looks to bend one in.
His shot has Kelleher beaten but Fabinho blocks the ball on the line.
Foden follows up with a good effort but the Liverpool keeper makes a good save down to his right.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    83. Oxlade-Chamberlain breaks from defence and strides forward into the Man City half.
One heavy touch gives the defender a 50/50 chance and the Liverpool man was never winning that one.
City look to manage the game now, passing it about and frustrating Liverpool.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    81. City attack again and cross finds Rodri running onto it.
He comes together with Kelleher and the referee awards a free kick to the keeper.
We are into the final ten minutes now and time is running out for Jurgen Klopp.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    79. It is all kicking off now as Rodri throws Fabinho to the ground.
It was a heavy tackle by the Brazilian but not as bad as Rodri was making out with his actions.
Both players are rightly shown a yellow card and we get on with the game.

    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    77. I wonder if any part of Jack Grealish’s subconscious knew that coming to City would see him spend more time on benches than a homeless person.
He has a chance to try and impress here.
Liverpool have to come at City so there should be plenty of space for the attacker to utilise.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    75. If you look at chances today, Darwin Nunez could have had a hat trick.
Then so could have Nathan Ake.
Imagine the score this game could have been, a festival of football.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    73. Grealish and Foden come on for City.
Not what any team wants to see really but Haaland and Palmer are brought off for them.
This has woken up the home fans a little.
Darwin Nunez wastes another good chance for Liverpool as he drags the ball wide of the far post.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    71. Naby Keita comes on for Liverpool.
He owes them a shift or two.
It has been a stop/start career for Keita in his time at Anfield.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    69. Liverpool comes forward and Oxlade-Chamberlain breaks into the box and goes to ground.
It looks as though the Liverpool man was trying to buy one there.
Minimal contact which caused the ex-Arsenal man to go down like a sniper had got him.

    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    67. Man City’s training tops are getting more and more wild.
As Grealish pulls one off to notify his impending introduction.
I wonder if all these training tops will all get sewn together at some point as Pep Guardiola reveals himself as the tops collectively make the world’s biggest Banksy painting.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    65. Liverpool start to knock the ball around.
City are keeping their shape, almost inviting them to come onto them.
The ball breaks to Robertson on the back post.
He hits it on the volley and shows why he is not considered an attacking player when it comes to scoring goals.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    63. Liverpool’s only option to stop De Bruyne may be to put heavy challenges in so Pep brings him off right now.
The Belgian midfielder has been man of the match without a shadow of a doubt.
Performances like this show why he is rightly considered as one of the best to ever grace this league.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    61. John Stones comes on for Man City.
Liverpool need to find a way back into this game now.
Klopp will be disappointed that it was one his substitutes, Jordan Henderson, who failed to react to the short corner quick enough.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    59. What a delivery from De Bruyne.
He could put a ball on any rock of your choosing on Mars with that right foot of his.
