Man Utd star Antony left red-faced by Arsenal’s ‘worst ever signing’ after tough first season

ANTONY is at risk of being outperformed by Arsenal flop Nicolas Pepe’s debut season in England. The Brazilian winger joined Manchester United from Ajax last summer for £85.5million but is yet to show his best form in the Premier League.

His stats this season are worse than Arsenal flops Nicolas Pepe’s debut campaign in EnglandCredit: Reuters
Like Antony, Pepe was signed for a large fee, £72m, but struggled to live up to expectations and was labelled the club’s ‘worst ever signing’.
However, when his stats are compared to the output of Antony, he did not do too badly.
In his debut campaign, Pepe played 42 times for the Gunners in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing ten assists.
This works out to a goal contribution every 150 minutes that he played in the 2019/20 campaign.

Pepe was able to do this during a turbulent time at the club which saw Unai Emery sacked.
Interim boss Freddie Ljungberg replaced the Spaniard and then current boss Mikel Arteta was appointed.
Whereas Antony has had the luxury of only playing for Erik ten Hag, who he also worked for at Ajax.
But he is performing well below Pepe’s record as he is averaging a goal contribution every 230 minutes.

He has made 33 appearances in all competitions this season but has only scored seven goals and provided one assist.
While Pepe won the FA Cup in his first season in England, Antony could still top the Ivorian’s trophy haul.
There is one glimmer of hope for Antony as he has already picked up a winners medal as Man United won the Carabao Cup and the club are still competing for the FA Cup and Europa League.
However, it seems unlikely that Antony will match the stats Pepe was able to produce.
Pepe was deemed a flop at the club and is currently trying to rebuild his confidence while on loan at Ligue 1 side Nice. More

According to Forbes, the former Arsenal star – who was a Champions League runner-up with the Premier League club – now has a net worth of £10billion.

Arsenal plot transfer for Brazilian wonderkid Matheus Goncalves dubbed Flamengo’s best EVER young prospect

ARSENAL are eyeing another Brazilian teenager after being alerted to Flamengo winger Matheus Goncalves. And they have been advised to make a quick move for the exciting 17-year-old in a bid to head off rival interest from Manchester City, Ajax and Benfica.
Matheus Goncalves is wanted by ArsenalCredit: Getty
The League leaders have an extensive network of talent scouts scouring the South American markets under the direction of sporting director Edu.
In the past few years they have been responsible for Gabriel Martinelli’s £6million move from Brazilian minnows Ituano as well as last summer’s £3m signing of Marquinhos from Sao Paulo.
Now they are tracking the progress of right winger Goncalves, who has been described as the best young prospect to ever come through Flamengo’s academy by former manager Dorival Junior.
And Arsenal are aware of the buzz surrounding the left-footed teenager who only made his senior debut in October but is already being tipped for future stardom in Europe.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
He is currently under contract until 2025 and his deal contains a staggering release clause of £88m.
But he wouldn’t cost anything like that figure and could be available for as little as £2.5m in the summer.

Virtually all of Goncalves’ 11 senior appearances for Flamengo have come off the bench but he scored the winning goal against Rio rivals Botafogo in his only start for the first team in February.
But he also has a raw side to his game and was sent off for two yellow cards in the recent game against Vasco da Gama despite only coming on as an 89th-minute substitute.

Yet that is unlikely to deter Arsenal, who believe their strong Brazilian connections will give them an advantage over potential rivals for the youngster’s signature.
As well as Edu, Martinelli and Marquinhos, they also have Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Magalhaes and Jorginho in their squad. More

But now he is back in full training, and his return is a boost for manager Mikel Arteta ahead of the remaining eight games.
Nketiah has scored nine goals this season, including six while deputising for the injured Gabriel Jesus after the World Cup.
Jesus is starting to motor, scoring in his last two Prem matches, but Nketiah’s return will give Arsenal plenty of attacking options as they look to maintain their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
But there is still no sign of defender William Saliba, who has missed Arsenal’s last three games with a back injury.

The French international centre-half was sorely missed during Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool.
The Gunners surrendered a two-goal lead and allowed Manchester City to close the gap at the top of the table.
Now Arteta is desperate to have Saliba back in action in time for the potential title decider at the Etihad on April 26.
The Frenchman’s partnership with Gabriel has been key to Arsenal’s Prem crown challenge.

West Ham line up two Premier League stars to replace Declan Rice with Arsenal favourites to sign England star

WEST HAM have reportedly identified their midfield targets for the summer as they look to replace the departing Declan Rice. The Hammers look resigned to the fact they will lose their captain in the summer with Arsenal currently said to be leading the race for the England star’s signature.
Conor Gallagher has been unable to recreate his lightning form from Crystal Palace this season at Chelsea
Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice often play together at the heart of Gareth Southgate’s England midfield
David Moyes’ side will need to find a fitting replacement for Rice who has been vitally important to the club since bursting onto the scene.
The Evening Standard have reported that the East London club are interested in two names to fill the spot vacated by Rice.
They are said to be looking at bringing in Kalvin Phillips and Conor Gallagher in order to bolster their midfield.
West Ham had a £50million bid rejected for Phillips in January 2022 before he made the move to Manchester City, but with his playing time limited at the Etihad a move could be more likely this time round.

Gallagher has been of interest to multiple Premier League clubs after falling out of favour at Chelsea following his spectacular loan spell with Crystal Palace last season.
West Ham will have to fend off the likes of Liverpool who are also rumoured to be interested in signing the Chelsea midfielder this summer.
Reports suggest it is extremely likely Rice will depart the London Stadium this summer after 10 years with the club from youth level to becoming club captain.
Arsenal are leading the charge for his signature, but it won’t be easy to secure his services with Chelsea and Manchester United said to be interested too.

Property firm ‘backed’ by footie stars Mikel Arteta and Luis Suarez could owe £1.2MILLION loan debt

A PROPERTY firm backed by footie stars Mikel Arteta and Luis Suarez could owe £1.2million to a cash-strapped council. The firm, linked to some of the biggest names in world football including Uruguay ace Suarez, borrowed £1.25m from Liverpool City Council.

Littlewoods Investment LLP used the council’s cash to transform an old industrial building in Liverpool into a trendy office block named the Bunker.
The Bunker, previously described as the “UK’s most stylish” office, formed the first part of the regeneration of the famous Littlewoods site next door.
Council bosses want to transform Liverpool into the “Hollywood of the North” and there are hopes that Littlewoods, a sprawling art deco building, can be a part of that vision.
The team behind The Batman starring Robert Pattinson recently handpicked the city famous for its Gothic architecture as a filming location.
Arteta, who now manages Premier League leaders Arsenal, joined Littlewoods Investment LLP in 2013.
There is no suggestion Arteta, the company or those involved have done anything wrong.
Companies House describes Arteta as the person of significant control in the LLP.
Former Liverpool and Barcelona striker Luis Suarez joined the firm in 2013, when the Uruguay international played for Liverpool FC.

Ex-Arsenal player Santiago Cazorla and former Liverpool player Pezzini Leiva also joined Littlewoods Investment in 2013.
Arteta, Suarez, Cazorla and Leiva have all played for some of the biggest clubs in the world and are respected figures in world sport.
Tim Heatley and Adam Higgins, co-founders of regeneration company Capital and Centric, are also designated members.
Documents filed to Companies House reveal that Liverpool City Council (LCC) granted the loan to Littlewoods Investment LLP in 2013 and charged the company an interest rate of six per cent.
The public documents suggest that the loan should be paid back within seven years and one month of the project’s completion.
LCC, in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, confirmed the loan had not at that point been paid back. Companies House also states that the loan is outstanding.
The Sun contacted both parties to confirm the current status of the loan, but could not get any details.
    ‘HOLLYWOOD OF THE NORTH’
The Bunker building was completed in 2015 by regeneration firm Capital and Centric.
The scheme was partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
The high-tech work space which features super-fast broadband sits next to Littlewoods Building which was ravaged by a massive blaze in 2018.
A local icon, which opened in the late 1930s, it was the flagship of the Littlewoods Pools empire.
The art-deco unit with a facade nearly one kilometre wide was convened during the war when parachutes and other supplies were made there.
LCC is now driving plans to turn the site into a film studio.
The plans will create thousands of local jobs and revive the site which has been derelict for years.
The city’s Metro authority and council have agreed to inject around £17m into the ambitious scheme which would boost the city’s chances of becoming the “Hollywood of the North.”
The city’s historic locations and scenic waterfront have been the backdrop for massive movies including Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger.
Speaking about the site last December Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor Liverpool City Region, said: “Our area has become a magnet for film and TV productions from around the world in recent years – making us the UK’s most filmed location outside of London.
“But I want to take our region to the next level, to stake our claim as the ‘Hollywood of the North’.

“The £17m we’re investing into both Littlewoods and The Depot will be central in turning that ambition into a reality – helping us to cater for every stage of the production process and creating new jobs and training opportunities for local people.
“I can’t wait to see work start on the project.”
