Danny Drinkwater slated on Aston Villa debut as Chelsea flop endures horror debut against Man City

ASTON VILLA debutant Danny Drinkwater trended on Twitter for his “disasterclass” as Chelsea’s £30million flop was torn apart by both Manchester City and social media.

The former England midfielder was slated as “completely disinterested” and mocked as his blunder helped gift ex-Leicester team-mate Riyad Mahrez his second goal as Sergio Aguero’s hat-trick led City’s 6-1 romp.

Ex-Three Lions hero Gary Lineker led the digs by tweeting: “Mahrez and Drinkwater still playing well together.”

And as Villa dropped into the bottom three, the duo’s contrasting career fortunes could not have been shown more starkly.

Drinkwater’s career has gone downhill spectacularly since the pair were key men when the Foxes won the Premier League in 2016.

And after a failed loan spell at Burnley this term plagued by injury, his latest temporary switch got off to an awful, anonymous start against the current champs.

One fan joked: “Drinkwater’s loan will be cancelled at half-time at this rate”.

Another claimed the 28-year-old was “still on hibernation mode”.

One said: “£140,000 a week – mind-blowing” – while a common opinion was: “He is as bad as Kevin de Bruyne is good”.

Mahrez’s brilliant opener and fierce finish for No2 – after David Silva robbed the dozing Drinkwater – were pounced upon by armchair critics.

One insisted handing him an instant debut against such a powerful side was “awful management decision.. right up there with the worst of them”.

And another fan asked: “What is the worst individual performance you’ve ever seen from a player?”

But another supporter made the crafty point: “Why is everyone tweeting me about Drinkwater? The geezer has run the game and has got three assists on his debut.”

At least Tony Grealish’s stylish, energetic display helped make up for the hapless performance alongside him.

But that could not distract from the stream of online barbs aimed at Drinkwater, who was finally replaced by Henri Lansbury 11 minutes from time.
