FORMER RB Leipzig chief Ralf Rangnick has likened Chelsea new boy Kai Havertz to Johan Cruyff – and tips the German to be a star in the Premier League.
Havertz has got off to a good start at Chelsea, scoring three goals in three appearances since his £71million move from Bayer Leverkusen.
Kai Havertz has been likened to Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff
The German international picked up his first hat-trick match ball after sinking three past Barnsley in Chelsea’s 6-0 Carabao Cup demolition.
Havertz, 21, is one of Europe’s brightest talents and was being tracked by the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Former RB Leipzig chief Rangnick has poured high praise on the versatile forward, calling him the ‘modern Johan Cruyff’.
Rangnick said: “I have no doubt he will be a sustainable success and become one of the top players over the next few years.
“I tried to sign him in Leipzig. I don’t see any weaknesses in his football. He is a modern Johan Cruyff. This transfer will be a success for Chelsea.”
Havertz is not shy of comparisons to legends of the game, Bayer Leverkusen’s assistant coach Marcel Daum has also said Havertz ‘has the elegance of Zidane’.
And he will do well to live up to comparisons with the late great Cruyff.
The former Ajax star won the Ballon d’Or three times and his philosophy inspired the great Barcelona teams of modern times.
Kai Havertz is still waiting to score his first Premier League goal
Chelsea’s next game comes against newly-promoted West Brom at the Hawthorns.
The game against the Premier League new boys gives Havertz a good opportunity to score his first Premier League goal for the Blues.
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea will be looking to get back to winning ways after losing 2-0 to Liverpool.
