David Beckham in transfer talks to sign James Rodriguez as Inter Miami chief battles Man Utd and Arsenal for Madrid star

DAVID BECKHAM has reportedly entered negotiations to bring James Rodriquez to Inter Miami from his former club Real Madrid.

The MLS legend is still developing his Miami side, who are in their debut MLS season and lost their opening two games against DC United and Los Angeles FC.

Despite being linked with experienced stars such as Edison Cavani, Luis Suarez and Cesc Fabregas, Beckham is yet to secure a marquee signing, despite hiring ex-Uruguay international Diego Alonso as the club’s inaugural head coach.

But according to Goal, the Miami chief has contacted Madrid president Florentino Perez to discuss the possibility of signing Rodriguez.

Beckham has a good relationship with Perez, the man who brought the ex-England captain to the Spanish capital from Manchester United in 2003.

And Madrid are said to be willing to sell Rodriquez, as his contract expires next summer, meaning he is free to negotiate with clubs in January.

With the LaLiga champions fearing they may lose the playmaker for nothing, Beckham has opened talks with them, despite no formal offers to either the club or player.

As with any owner, you really want the best players and if we have the opportunity to bring in players like Cristiano or Leo, I have such admiration for them as athletes, if we could bring those players in then great.

The Colombian has made just 13 appearances for Madrid this season since returning from his two-year Bayern Munich loan and has missed the majority of the campaign through injury.

Bernabeu boss Zinedine Zidane has no intention of keeping Rodriquez, 28, past this season as he instead wants to recall Martin Odegaard from his loan at Real Sociedad and pair him with and a midfield signing.

Beckham wants to convince Rodriquez to reinvent his career Stateside, while previously insisting the brand new team is the perfect place for superstars even as big as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

He said on the Jimmy Fallon show: “We’ve been contacted by a lot of different players with possibly coming to join the team.

“As with any owner, you really want the best players and if we have the opportunity to bring in players like Cristiano or Leo, I have such admiration for them as athletes, if we could bring those players in then great.

“But at the moment, we have a great roster. Young players, a couple of experienced players too, but a lot of young players who are just ready to play.

“One of the things I learnt from Alex Ferguson – he turned around to me and said whoever you bring in, they have to be the right fit for the club. It’s not about the biggest name or personality, it’s about who fits in best with the players.

“That’s what we’ll do. But, like I said, as an owner if you want to bring these players in then we have a great opportunity.”
