MANCHESTER UNITED have been handed a huge boost in their race to land Jack Grealish after Darius Vassell admitted the Aston Villa captain has “got to go.”
The Red Devils have made the midfielder their top target this summer and are prepared to splash out up to £70million as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues his policy of targeting young English talent.
Jack Grealish is continuing to be linked with Manchester United and Darius Vassell admitted Aston Villa have to let him go
SunSport revealed that the 24-year-old sees Old Trafford as his No 1 destination this summer should he leave his boyhood club.
And although Villa legend Vassell would love nothing more than Grealish to stay at the West Midlands outfit, the former striker claimed that fans shouldn’t hold it against him for walking away.
He told Stadium Astro: “I always get asked about Jack Grealish’s situation. I want him to stay through supporting Villa – he’s one of our own.
“But he’s so good now, where could he end up if he went to a better team with better players? Is it right to hold him back? If you look at history, you’ve got Gareth Barry and James Milner who left for City. Top quality players went on to bigger and better things.
“So I think it’s a matter of time. He’s so good, how can other teams not be tempted to come in and steal him?
“I don’t like saying it but he’s got to go at some point. Unless Villa get new owners and are buying the best players, go and get the most for your career.
“I don’t think Villa fans would blame him – he’s played his heart out and done brilliantly. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t be surprised.”
Villa would want up to £60m for their talisman, who has also eyed by Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Grealish has leapfrogged Leicester City’s James Maddison as a midfield option this summer, with the midfielder looking for a personal package of around £150,000 per week if he moves.
The Villa skipper signed a bumper five-year deal in September 2018 – taking him to around £50,000 per week and now has the chance to triple his current pay packet.
