Man Utd eye David Carmo – dubbed ‘next Van Dijk’ – but face transfer competition with TEN clubs keen on £36m defender

MANCHESTER UNITED are not alone in their desire to sign David Carmo, it has been claimed.

The Portuguese defender, 21, is making a name for himself at Braga and recently signed a new contract with the club.

That served to double his release clause, from £18million to £36m.

Reports last week indicated that United were keen on Carmo.

However, the club’s backlog of defenders, including Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, could mean that a sale is necessary before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can add to his defence.

Even if the Red Devils can clear space, as many as TEN rival clubs have already made contact with Carmo’s representatives over a move, according to The Athletic.

Roma were said to have bid £15m for the youngster in the summer before completing a deal for Chris Smalling.

Coming in at 6ft 5in but described as strong in possession, Carmo has attracted comparisons to Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk.

The left-footed centre-back made his Primeira Liga debut in January and has racked up 27 appearances for Braga.

Until a red card against Vitoria Guimaraes last month, he had been ever-present in Carlos Carvalhal’s side and featured in the 4-0 Europa League humbling at the hands of Leicester.

Braga tied Carmo down to a long-term contract last week, which runs to 2025.

After signing the deal, the Portugal youth international expressed his optimism at challenging for titles with Braga second in the league.

He stated: “I am very happy and I feel at home. I feel that Braga believe in me and that people value my work.

“What I try to do is to help the club as much as possible and that is what I will try to do in the future, for the next five years.

“I don’t like to call myself an example to others, but rather proof that it is possible, that if you work, if you have all of the conditions on and off the field, that you are be able to seize the opportunity.

“I think that a player from Braga has more and more responsibility because Braga are a big club, we are increasingly one of the best teams in Portugal.”
