Edinson Cavani’s agent claims PSG star would have joined Man Utd or Chelsea if he was only interested in quick pay day

EDINSON CAVANI would have joined Manchester United or Chelsea if he was only thinking about money, the player’s agent said.

Cavani last month handed in a transfer request having made only six starts for PSG this season.

And Atletico Madrid looked to have beaten off interest from Premier League duo Chelsea and United to the signing of the 32-year-old striker, whose contract expires in the summer.

But the move broke down as the French champions demanded £25million for the forward, who is available on a free in just six months time.

Cavani’s agent and brother Walter Guglielmone insisted the PSG striker was pushing for a move to Atletico and was even willing to lower his wages, which are thought to top £360,000-a-week.

Guglielmone said: “Cavani was willing to receive less than with PSG.

“Atletico could not cover the total economic cost of the operation and PSG did not want to lower the amounts he was asking for. Atletico Madrid did not close the agreement.

“Do you think that Edi did not play for almost a month at PSG so that I could drop the operation for a commission and that Edi did not fulfill his dream of going to Atletico Madrid?

“If it were for money, Edi would have gone to England, Manchester or Chelsea.”

Cavani’s agent had already held talks with Atletico chiefs in Madrid, with the Uruguayan striker now set for a move to the Spanish capital in the summer instead.

It was understood the former Napoli star had no interest in a move to Chelsea or United as he wanted guaranteed game time, not supplying backup to Tammy Abraham at Stamford Bridge or Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford.

Cavani has scored five goals this season, but has fallen down the pecking order with Mauro Icardi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe leading the line in Paris.
