The youngest driver on the grid, 22, was robustly nudged out of the lead by Antonio Felix Da Costa before recovering to take the win.

This was Gunther’s second stunning overtake of the race after he initially took the lead from Jaguar’s Mitch Evans.

He managed to reel Evans into a dogfight before completing an exquisite overtake on the straight.

“it’s a dream come true, to win my first race.

Gunther said: “It was a nice fight until the end and I’m super happy with my first victory in Formula E.

“It became quite challenging – it was an amazing race, fighting so much side-by-side with the cars for the win, it’s super cool.”

Evans lost a commanding lead to Gunther, but things went from bad to worse when Felix Da Costa climbed from tenth to take second place.

Ex-F1 star and Ferrari test driver Pascal Wehrlein missed out on the podium after starting in third.

British title contender Alex Sims was forced to retire from the race after contact early on in the race.
