Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against rivals Argentina set to be axed after refusing to play suspended clash next month

BRAZIL’S World Cup qualifier against rivals Argentina looks set to be scrapped as they are refusing to play the rearranged clash. The initial match between the two South American heavyweights last September was sensationally abandoned after just six minutes.

Health officials stormed the pitch in Sao Paulo to remove four Argentine players accused of breaking Covid quarantine rules and falsifying documents to enter Brazil illegally.
Even without the completed match, both countries safely qualified to secure their spots at Qatar 2022.
However, they were fined by Fifa and have been ordered to replay it anyway this September, a year later than the original date.
However, as reported by SI, Brazil are insisting they will not take to the field because it is too risky for them ahead of the World Cup which starts in November.

Fears over suspensions, injuries, an Argentina boycott and the inability to find another opponent for a second match mean the Selecao boss Tite would prefer to play two friendlies in Europe instead.
Brazilian confederation president Ednaldo Rodrigues said: “We will reach out to Fifa so this match is not played.
“I will make every effort to answer to the request of our coaching staff.
“Our priority is to win the World Cup in Qatar.

“If that match is not recommended by the coaching staff of the Selecao, we will work for it not to be played.”
Brazil and Argentina’s federations have taken the case to the Court for Arbitration of Sport, which is expected to rule later in August.
The five-time champions, who last lifted the trophy in 2002, are in Group G with Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon.

There are claimed to be alternative treatments to surgery which would keep him out for two months and therefore return in time for the tournament in Qatar.

Juventus would rather Pogba undergo surgery now and miss the World Cup.

Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey alarmed Wales have NOT extended Page’s deal beyond World Cup despite ending 64-year wait

GARETH BALE and Aaron Ramsey are alarmed that Robert Page’s Wales contract beyond the World Cup has not been sorted yet.Page had his current deal extended by the Football Association of Wales to the conclusion of November’s finals after ending the Dragons’ 64-year wait by qualifying for Qatar.
Gareth Bale and his Wales pals are worried Rob Page hasn’t had his contract extended yet despite helping to end his nation’s 64-year World Cup waitCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
Contract talks have started between FAW and Page’s representatives over a longer term deal to run until Euro 2024 but no agreement has been reached.
Page took over as interim boss since Ryan Giggs was arrested in November 2020 and the Manchester United legend stepped down as Wales manager in June ahead of his domestic violence trial next month.
Wales captain Bale has already publicly pledged his support that Page should become the nation’s long-term manager beyond the World Cup where the Dragons face USA, Iran and arch rivals England in Group B.
Bale said last month: “He is the long-term manager. I don’t think there is any question in the changing room or from the fans. He’s done an incredible job coming in in difficult circumstances. I guess that’s why you achieve big things when your team is happy and your manager is doing well.”

And free agent Ramsey, who had his Juventus contract terminated by mutual consent on Tuesday, has also been impressed with the work Page has done in his interim 24-match spell in charge, which has yielded ten wins, eight draws and just six defeats.
Stars Bale and Ramsey want Page’s future sorted soon to end any uncertainty ahead of the finals – Wales’ first appearance on the global stage since 1958.
On the pitch, Wales are in a golden period having qualified for back-to-back Euro finals before Page led his country to the World Cup after the 1-0 play-off final triumph over Ukraine.
But concerns are growing behind the scenes with the departure of staff over recent months.
